DFA*50/1.4 test in French

With this objective an almost 30-month shortage without the sale of new D FA products comes to an end. Which is a long time. But in the end, the wait was worth it, because the goal turned out to be monstrous. In every sense of the word. By its weight certainly, but especially by its impressive performances. It shows itself remarkable with a beautiful resistance to flare and AC outside while proposing an excellent homogeneity of the image and an absence of distortion.

But what we can remember is that this D FA ★ 50/1.4 seems to be at ease in any type of shooting. Outdoors, its all-weather construction allows it to be taken out in any condition while producing crisp, balanced images. Indoors, it will rise to the occasion, both in classic conditions of use (family assembly, etc.) and in studio conditions. One can only reproach him for being a little too precise in the details. This is undoubtedly one of the brand's best objectives in a long time (probably with the D FA ★ 70-200).

There remains the price, which many might find excessive. For these, we can only recommend the FA 50/1.4, which is smaller and more accessible. The D FA ★ 50/1.4 is a high quality objective, which deserves the STAR designation and whose price is justified.

The Plus
Optical quality from full opening
The homogeneity of the image from the center field to the edge field
Ultra-fast and accurate focusing
All Weather Construction Quality
The bokeh

The least
The weight

Help/Suggestions fixing DA 18-135 with AF intermittent

I have a DA 18-135 that was on a camera that took a fall, the lens has no sign of outward damage, the body however has a good chip out of it. I believe the shock misaligned something inside the lens (I've take the back ring off already to check the AF connector is still in place and it was). I've looked for youtube videos to have some ideas of how to go deeper into the lens, to the motor and found none (I watched some on the 18-55). I did pull out the optical stack but stopped there not wanting to risk breaking something.

Any tips?

Manual Focus Lens Use Question

Just note to add that if you use live view, you still need to press the green button to meter the lens with the set aperture. The use of live view is not noted in the link provided.
Also, if you use Tv mode with only f5.6, then I believe you get correct exposure since the metering is done at f5.6.

I've seen a similar issue with a K200D once. It appeared to be caused buy charging the internal clock battery or cap. I just left the camera on for several minutes. I then turned it on/off again and it came to life. When it came to life, I had to enter several parameters. I hope this works for you.

Does the front mount disc work much better than using an aperture disc in the adaptor?

Get the DFA 150-450 and don't look back. There are many 50's that may not be quite as nice as the new Fat Fifty, but there's only 1 DFA150-450. It is a beast to carry around, however.

A nice series of shots. Sure to help those considering buying the Fat Fifty! How does it sound when focusing? I have the DA 55 and it squeaks a little while focusing.

Have you considered just buying a Ricoh Theta, they make great 360 shots with minimal effort. Probably cheaper than a pro tripod and head.

Nice pics. Now I need to go out and take some shots with my F135. I bought one locally over winter and haven't really taken it out for some shots. These shots are so nice. Time for some portraits.

It will be interesting to see it compared to the DA55 f1.4, Sigma 50mm f1.4 and the many 50mm primes Pentax has produced. Lets hope we'll see a comparison review soon.

I would suggest also considering the F50 FA50 DFA50 f2.8 Macro lenses (or the DA35 limited macro). You get excellent close focus capability, they are all very sharp and you get to add a macro lens in your tool box. Also, if you ever think about moving to FF, then it might be worth having a good FF lens. Construction of the DFA, FA and F series lenses are much more stout than the DA50, DA35.

Put both up for sale, they are fairly common lenses and unremarkable in their performance. I have had both, I gave one away to my brother, the M version is still up for sale. They are probably going to take a while to sell. For mirrorless, either works well and the A version has no convenience advantage. The A version is easier to use for metering on k-mount. I also have the A50 f1.4 and F50 f1.7. I prefer having AF available and the F50 work very well.

FA* 85 & no AF, how to use on K-1

I have an FA * 85 f1.4 and the K-1 as well. When I made the AF fine adjust it had a fairly large adjustment. If you are using f1.4 and yours is the same, that would certainly explain your of results. The fine tuning of af also applies to manual focus as it calibrated the af sensor, ovf offset vs the actual focal plane. On the APSC bodies you could get an accessory focus screen that made manual focus much easier, a prism style one like the old mf camera days. I haven't seen this for the K1. That's likely due to the new info overlay on the off screen. Adjust the af fine tuning and as suggested above, get a magnifier accessory and it should improve thinks greatly.

Any chance Pentax service can fix what Eric can't? It might be worth asking them if you have enough info from Eric on the reason it's unrepairable.
