As regards the radioactive lens, just stop worrying, the amount of radiation they emit is about the same as the normal background radiation that we are all exposed to. In fact you would get a higher dose of radiation by visiting Cornwall where there the granite bedrock emits a high amount of radiation.

I would suggest that the foam seals and the mirror bumpers in particular will need replacing in both cameras to get any sort of reliable operation.

As regards the S1a shutter, it sounds like it is suffering with dried up grease problems which can involve a lot of work to rectify and I wouldn't recommend that you try yourself if haven't had any experience of shutter repair, definitely do not start oiling things because you will only cause other problems. Either get it repaired professionally or just keep it as a non-working start of your collection ( it sounds like you are going to have a collection eventually :) ).

This is a common problem with the Pentax M 35mm f3.5 but have never seen it with the Pentax K 35mm f3.5.

In theory yes, if the lubrication on the spring and ball have dried out then it could become stuck in the inward position.

Good adhesive to reapply leatherette?

Rubber rings on lenses usually become loose when they have stretched.

The easiest way to overcome this is with double sided adhesive tape, this not only holds the ring in place but helps to take up some of the space.
Apply the tape to the lens and then fit the ring over it.

Seems to be a common thing to do if you're using it for video.
I don't do video but the only advantage I can see is that it would allow you to do fade in and fade out shots.

To my mind it is just an easy way to ruin a good lens.

Firstly looking into the camera, the actuating lever should be in the position shown below. If moved by hand it should return to this position rapidly.

On the back of the lens, the lever should be in the positions as shown below, the lever will move when the aperture is changed. It should not be possible to move the lever by hand.
Although if the lens has been declicked (the physical stops to the aperture ring removed) then this may be possible.

What Film Bodies Do We All Have

Just counting Pentax models, all in working order:
S3
S1a chrome
S1a black
SP
SP II
ME super
MV
Super A
K2 black
MX black

The MX is only one that gets the occasional use. I am thinking of selling the K2 as it is in great condition and much too useable to just keep as an ornament.

I also have loads of russian RF cameras, all working but only ever sit on the shelf.

Put a rubber glove on your hand, with the camera sitting on the table press on the cap with the heel of your thumb and turn in a clockwise direction.

ME Super battery cover won't fit

My ME super has the words "battery open" engraved on it so I'm not sure that is much of a clue.

It may be possible that the whole bottom plate of one of your cameras has been changed before, perhaps one from an ME, I know that the battery covers do vary in size between some models.

Funny story of camera disassembly

I always use a plastic storage box that is divided into sections, as used for storing small craft items. Each sub-assembly goes into its own compartment with fixing screws, the compartments are used in order as disassembled so its just a case of reversing direction when assembling. The box has the advantage of having a lid so that removes the problem of bits getting mixed up if it gets knocked or moved.

The marks that show on the bottom of the frame mainly in picture 2 don't look like light leaks, more likely uneven development caused by insufficent agitation during processing. The marks normally coincide with the film perforations.

Pentax K2 prism

Thanks for that, so it doesn't look too hopeful. I did find a post elsewhere that suggested the prism from a Minolta XG-1 would fit so perhaps if all else fails I will try that.

I have a K2 with a prism that has a small silvering defect. I would like to replace the prism and am wondering if one from a different more easily obtainable model would fit.

Those shots are much better, really shows the camera's true capabilities.
I have always found that if you want decent scans then you need to do them yourself.

The above pictures also seem to apply to the S1a because I have both early and late models which show the same differences to the actuating lever.

This can happen when the switch contacts are slightly too close, even with the shutter lock on the slighest pressure on the button is enough to activate the switch and cause battery drain.

Optical Measurements of Pentax ME Super Shutter Speed

I have a similar setup that I use although mine is a little more elaborate in the fact that it has 2 light detectors so that I can measure both curtains independently.

However I measure from the point where the trace starts to rise to the point where it starts to fall. I find by doing this it eliminates the rise and fall times and is easier to make sense of the traces for the fast shutter speeds. I have shown my system drawn in green on one of your original diagrams below.

Spotmatic SP500 - Meter working but with some issues

This is usually a sign that there is corrosion or dust in the needle pivot bearing or possibly that the needle is making physical contact with the casing or screen. If it is dust then you may be able to clear it with a careful blast of canned air but normally once they start doing this it is time for a replacement meter.

Alien life forms...fungus in the prism
Posted By Ray-uk

The fungus is definitely not inside the glass, that is not physically possible.

It may have etched the surface of the glass or got between the glass and the silvering. Whilst strong UV light may kill the fungus and stop it growing further it will not remove it or any damage it has done.
If it cannot be cleaned manually from the surface then the only option is to replace the prism.

I normally use an oscilloscope to test shutter speeds but for those who want to play with the simpler system using a phone app there is more information on the link below ( there is also a link about the free app)
