Pentax 300 lens choice

The M300 is tolerable at f8. The A300 doesn't have as severe aberrations, and I got some nice shots with it. A very narrow light level and background combinations give you acceptable shots. Both are like handling jewels.

Moving from a zoom to a prime should be an increase in quality. That isn't the case here. The F, FA or DA 300 gives you that increase in quality. All three are very nice lenses and worth what you pay for them.

The 55-300 is better than the M or A. The M has fierce aberrations. The A is better. Don't spend too much on either. I managed a few decent shots with the A, but the window of acceptable is very narrow.

Thanks. They have the Katana line of gimbals. I have a Jobu that is still working ok, but will replace it with either this or a Wimberley.

Pentax video: is it really that lousy?

To do video properly is extremely difficult. I have done a bit and my skills don't take full advantage of what the K1 offers or the K3 did. But I've managed to get some interesting shots; on tripod most of the time.

I was bumping the limits of the K3 using long lenses, have a ways to go with the K1 with stills. With video any lack is in my ability.

I've got one of these lenses coming this week. What length of arca swiss plate to I need to get the lens balanced?

f/5.6 1/800 500mm ISO2000. This is a shot I couldn't have gotten with the K3. I would have been down to 1/400 and maybe f4.5 to get the noise down. It was low light in the morning. I would have had movement blur and even at those lower iso values the noise in that light condition on the K3 is quite bad.

I shot the K3 for two or three years, can't remember. I got many fine shots with it, but the image quality degraded in low light.

I shoot the K1 with a Sigma 500 f4.5. It is a very nice combination.

Wildlife shooting isn't about length, it is about technique. I would suggest starting with 300mm because you will learn the skill of getting close to your subject. Long lenses aren't about getting something far away, it is filling the frame with something close.

It is also about light. I shoot at dusk and dawn with my combination. This morning I was out watching an osprey family enjoying breakfast. Through scouting and experience watching them I know where to go to get close. The K1 allowed me to get nice quality at 1/500 and iso 2500. I look at the 150-450 from time to time and it would end up being my summer daytime lens.

Don't try to save money. Try to shoot things, learn what you like to shoot, and push your existing stuff as far as you possibly can go. Then you will be able to know what you want. I wanted the K1 to get shots in the early morning. I wanted the 500mm because I knew the perimeter distance that the species I watch will tolerate. No matter what you do it will cost a substantial sum. Best to be very clear on what you are buying will solve.[COLOR="Silver"]

An Osprey family gets breakfast. Here comes the food!

The K1 low light capability got these shots. Sigma 500 f4.5

But where is mine?

Tug of war.

More Pikas. I could watch these guys all day. The trick is finding a comfortable rock to sit or stand on. They are starting to collect their winter food.

Depends what you shoot. I can't capture a bird flying towards me unless I do a pre focus point. Not complaining though, I get shots my friend with a D500 can't get due to low light conditions. The quick focus and frame rate of his camera gets shots that I couldn't get.

If Pentax released something like this I think I would have to buy it.

A young osprey learning what those long things are for.

I was out this morning at first light, and am amazed at the low light performance of the K1. It is possible to shoot wildlife at dawn and dusk.

shutter vibration and shake reduction

I shoot long, 500mm Sigma f4.5 predominantly. The K1 with battery grip. Vibration is a non factor except for very long shots on a tripod. I use the electronic shutter in those instances, as well as standard mirror up and time delays.

We have a landlocked salmon in the lake here, and some spawn on the shore near our home. This is last year with the K1. First shot apc-crop mode, the second cropped further. They are a long way off, first light. I had trouble getting decent shots with the K3 due to shutter shock and having to keep the iso low. f/5.6 1/1250 500mm ISO2500.

I think this is electronic shutter. The low light performance helps enormously.
