The Journey from 'Chimping'

Despite the desire to over ride my brain. I still think in film terms. I first started using digital in my work in 2005 but since the work output was mostly documentary, I did not have to go into the various modes; everything was focus-meter.shoot in M mode. Now, most of what I do is personal, I find that I am leaning more and more dependent on the camera. I do flip back to film with my old M 42 Pentax gear and y Mamiya 330f. I havn't printed recently; I have been scanning my negatives (and positives) and printing electronically but I am thinking about getting the darkroom out of the boxes and doing it the old fashioned way.

Upgrade from K3 to K1? Advice please!

I kept my K3 and I am happy that I did. First, I have Pentax M-42 glass from 24 mm to 500mm that adapts to the K -1. I have acquired a Irix 18 mm for the low end. I have a 50 mm 1.8 that works for the mid level and bought a 25-70 mm for the walkaround and the "walk around lens" and the 70-200 mm for the tele. I use the M-42 300 and 500 mm for both. The most important thing that i have found is the burst rate on the K-1 is much lower than the K-3 and if I need that Higher burst rate for sports or other action photography i use the K-3. But what do I know? I still do film.

I mated a Gitzo Cremailiere 3 from the 1970's with a Manfrotto 410 Geared head that can handle a 500 mm SMC Takumar on my K1. Sturdy as a rock! Also is a solid platform for my Mamiya C 330 f for landscape work.

All of these images were superb. There is a certain vibrancy to my choice that earned the minute qualities that, in my eye, put it over the top.

My answer would be no, I love my K3 and F1. I still have and use my four M42 film bodies with my SMC Takumar Primes from 24 to 500 mm. I also have a great Nikon F-5 and am building my lens inventory. My camera for Medium Format is a Mamiya 330f that produces great high resolution images.

K3iii vs K1ii

I still use both K3 and K1 and enjoy them both for different uses. I like the K3 for fast moving events and for things that I want to send over the Internet, ie family candid photos and sports where the smaller files are more efficiently transmitted and the burst speed is greater for active subjects (K3). The K1 gives me images with higher resolutions that make larger prints for landscape, architectural, and portrait applications. I don't do much, if any video. When I wish to do so, I will probably buy a dedicated video camera,

Is this a joke? Has anyone tried this 500mm?

I have the M 42 version of this lens left over from my film days. I have tested it on my K 3 and K 1 with an adapter and it appears to work well. Long lenses have a limited usefulness because of the weight of the older SMC 500 and 1000 mm., but it does fill a niche for certain sport events and wildlife photography. Also, you would need a very study tripod to use this lens effectively. My lens is both manual focus and aperture. It takes some practice to master the all manual functions. One thing that is unusual is the filter mount is 49 mm and is in the rear mount, not in the front of the lens. You might pay more for a filter than the camera; the front lens is very large.

Neither the ES or the ES II meter exposure in manual mode. If metering is in Auto mode then the Stop down switch on the left housing needs to be in the Up position to meter with manual lenses.

K-1 and DA lens compatibility

I recently mounted all of my DA lenses and tested them on the K-1. I only have three: The Pentax-DA 1:2.8 35mm Macro Limited; The Pentax DA 1:1.8 50mm; and the SMC Pentax-DA 1:3.5-135. I was surprised to find the 50 mm lens was the only one that had no vignetting at any aperture. Has anyone found other DA lenses that are fully compatible with FF bodies?
