I have bought a Gimbal Head for my long lens and need to remove the Pan Tilt head from the tripod so I can mount the Gimbal Head. No luck so far. Any suggestions are welcome.

With over 30 lens going from M42 to KAF mounts and no truly new lens so far....No. I have had zero trouble with the focus on the K1.

I' ve tried them several times(Thanks Larry Brown) but have never liked them. Too bulky and makes everything awkward to me. If I need an extra battery then I'll remove it from a pocket and change it out. To each his own but I just do not see why one would be needed.

I find that I have trouble, while on my inversion table at midnight in a driving rain storm with my wife screaming at me from the front porch and spotlighting me with a powerful LED flashlight, I have trouble getting a focus lock on a gnats a$$ perched on a petunia in the front flower bed. Other than that it functions just fine.

The 50-500 has been the Bigma since the first non DG version was sold in 2001. Call your personal lens Big Moose but the 50-500 will always be Bigma. Mine is the DG version released in 2006. They later released a HSM version but the Pentax mounted lens have never to my knowledge had optical stabilization in the lens as OS or as Pentax calls it IS is in the camera instead. So please feel free to call your new lens whatever you wish but for over 16 years the 50-500mm Sigma has been and forever will be the Bigma.

I use mine as a walk around lens and accompany it now with a 17-35 Sigma lens. You just have to try it for yourself. It may turn out to be too much for you to carry. I carry it on the OEM Pentax neck strap myself but your way may be the best for you. Remember at the long end(400-500mm) this lens needs lots of light or a great increase in ISO because of slow shutter speed lens shake and blur can show it's ugly head. Even with IS working you will need good light. Have fun and have patience.

I've used my Bigma and my 18-55 Kit lens as my walk about kit for years now. It is a heavy load but it hasn't bothered me at all. I've carried it around for 6-8 hours at a time. I will continue to do this with the K1 the same as I've done with my K10D, KX and K7. The Bigma is so versatile. You can use it as a landscape lens, a portrait lens and a wildlife and sports lens. I've even shot flowers with it even though it is far from being a Macro lens. The better ISO with the K1 makes it even more usable. Just be prepared for the weight. it will be a hefty load. I'm 6'2" and near 300 lbs. so for me it is not a burden. For some it is just too heavy. Have fun with it and post some shots as soon as possible. We will be looking forward to it.

As to being crazy....Well you do shoot with Pentax.......Don't you?

I've owned this lens since around 2006. I've used it with a K10D, A KX and a K7. I have yet to put it on my K1. That should come sometime soon. You will not be disappointed with it but please understand it is not just a point and shoot lens. It takes some time to get used to the longer focal length. I shoot almost exclusively hand held and do quite well. I do recommend that you try it that way but a tripod helps most that try one. I'll post you some photos as soon as I shoot them. Do not forget the short end as at 50mm it is a nice portrait lens.

I love my F 50 f1.7 but the front element spinning when focusing makes using a polarizing filter harder. Sharp though.

I often have to de-saturate reds and yellows when shooting photos with my K10D, KX or my K7. Those two colors seem to smudge to the point that detail is lost. I de-saturate to get that detail back. Hoping the K1 I now have will do better.

I do not understand the issue with weight. I shoot on a regular basis with a K7 and a Sigma 50-500 mounted while carrying a bag with a 18-55 pentax kit lens, a Vivitar 85mm f1.4, a vivitar series 1 55mm macro, and a Pentax-F 50mm f1.7 with 2 extra batteries and a Vivitar Zoom Thyristor flash. I can carry this all day if needed and sometimes add in a Majestic 3000 tripod and majestic 1400 gear head camera mount for shorter treks.

So the K1 weighs an ounce or 2 more. So what! :):):):):):):):):):):):):)

I think I've used the green button twice when I first got my K10D. Haven't used it since. at F/8 and below I just set the aperture, set the camera at aperture priority and focus till I get a green light then shoot. Works so far. My M42's have a manual auto switch so you can set the aperture .
