Thanks. Whatever it is called, it is infinitely better than the filters I was using, and quite a lot better than what is used on my Sigma lens. :)

I just returned from a very rewarding trip to Cuba. In particular, the two cities I visited - Havana and Matanzas - were an absolute photographer's dream. However, I had some troubles with my polarizing filters that I thought I'd mention in case you are planning to travel to Cuba.

The cities are loaded with air pollution. I'd assumed this was primarily from all of the old cars belching out exhaust fumes (and believe me, they do a lot of belching), but I was told upon returning to Canada that there are factories outside the cities that also produce copious amounts of air pollution.

Regardless of the source, the pollution was trouble for my polarizing lens filters. In normal use, they are good quality, but they do not have multi-coating, and were an absolute bitch to keep clean. On more occasions than I care to mention, my filters were covered in gunk that didn't wipe off easily. Then, half way through the trip, my one and only lens pen broke, and I was left with just my microfibre cloth to do the cleaning.

The problem worsened until I ended up removing them and just throwing them in my bag. Just couldn't keep them smudge-free.

The good news was that my Pentax super-multi coated lenses fared much better and were easily cleaned. I also have the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 which was not as good as my Pentax lenses, but better than the filters.

The lessons I learned from this trip are that; Pentax lenses even better quality than I thought, and that I will be spending extra money on lens filters to ensure they also have multi-coating.

Hope this helps someone avoid what I went through.

I'm so glad to have found this thread because this lens had won me over - especially with its macro capabilities. Here are two examples, both of which recently were approved in the Pentax Photo Gallery.

Most of these are cross-posted on the Monochrome thread, but they were taken with the DA15 (which I use more and more every day!) so I thought I'd post here as well. :)

Time to stop lurking (and admiring!) and start posting. :) These were all taken with my DA15, except the last one which was taken with my DA35 Macro.

Up Close & Personal With Mr. Magpie

The photo itself is probably not the most remarkable image of a bird, but I'm submitting it anyway because of the 'how' behind taking it.

I took this photo with my DA35mm F2.8 Limited Macro lens. Of course, the image has been cropped, but I was still within an arm's length from the creature when I took it. I was able to get that close by hiding my face behind the camera, and then slowly - ever slowly - creeping toward the Magpie. I'm still amazed I was able to get that close since Magpies are notoriously intelligent and skittish around people.

The K-5's terrific sensor did the rest. :)

Jasper is, indeed, a gorgeous place and you've done a nice job here with the photos.

One little correction, if I may? It's actually Jasper, Alberta - the province on the east side of the continental divide, and the one I happen to live in. :)

I was photographing an old brick building in downtown Edmonton when two ladies (drunk as skunks) approached me yelling "Happy Valentine's Day!". The one in this photo was carrying glasses and a bouquet and asked me to take her photo. I had my DA15mm lens on my K-5, so I had to get pretty close for the shot. As soon as I had snapped off a couple, she lurched at me, wished me Happy Valentines Day, attempted a hug and, to my surprise, *BIT* my left cheek. I was shocked and hurried back to the office (this happened during my lunch break) where I promptly washed my face, examined myself for cuts, and then used alcohol-based disinfectant on my face. The whole thing freaked me out quite a bit - especially those few minutes worrying if her teeth had broken the skin. Hepatitis is not a good thing to catch from an intravenous drug user - an activity I think wouldn't be above this friendly character.

Speaking from experience, I can say a pet goat can be an awful lot of fun, so don't be disappointed if that's all you get on your list. ;)

Also, they make great photographic subjects!
