I just got a "like-new" used 645 FA 80-160 mm f/4.5 zoom lens. This is my first image with it, taken handheld @ 80 mm and f/11. Autofocusing is rapid and precise but I should have used my Manfrotto tripod as overcast skies took their toll on the shutter speed.

Pentax 6x7 vs 645 systems Advantages and Disadvantages?

I got a Pentax 6X7 system in 1991 and always loved the results, though handling has never been easy (tripod, weight, cost). I bought a "like-new" Pentax 645N 3 years ago with a 45-85 A and a 80-160 A plus 2 film backs for less than 1000 $. The results were more than satisfying and I thought "Damn, I should have purchased this system 20 years earlier".

I own 53 Pentax lenses and this FA J 75-300 mm is the only piece of crap ever made by Pentax. Use it as a paper weight, I never took any sharp picture with this very poor lens.

This is a straight picture taken without any filter. I didn't want to lose the reflections at the surface of the water on the left of the image. I use polarizers only in very graphic and simple compositions.

I got a used A 35-70 mm f/4 that gives really good results on my Pentax K5. I tried it with my K1 and found it not very impressive but it's really good on APSC. It cost next to nothing though.

Picture of a forest path in Mauricie Nat'l Park, taken with a Pentax 67II and a 45 mm f/4 wide-angle lens on a tripod on Ektar 100 film. Aperture must have been f/11 or f/16. Notice how pictures taken on film show duller colors than pictures taken with modern digital equipment.

I have no merit, really ... I took 16 different exposures handheld and only this one came out to my taste ... lol! I'm always very reluctant to up my ISO above 100 or 200 ... this time it was set at 800, a rarity for me. This result encourages me to use higher ISO's in the future ...

Travel Interstate-70, a marvel of engineering crossing the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

I had the opportunity to stop for a short period on this stretch of Interstate-70 in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado so I could take this picture. What a feat of road engineering this is, a highway built along and over a river in a winding canyon. Picture taken with a Canon G3X. Notice the slow shutter speed, this is due to the presence of a built-in Neutral Density filter that blocks part of the incoming light.

FA 80-160 is dirt cheap and you can easily find "like-new" copies on EBay. Go for it, it is a very useful lens.

Pentax 67: just one lens

Knowing what I know now, I would choose the 67 105 mm f/2.4 over the 67 90 mm f/2.8 anytime. The 105 is amazingly sharp and contrasty and performs very well between f/4 and f/16. The 90 mm has been the only disappointment in almost 30 years of medium-format photography (Pentax 67 and 67 II, Pentax 645N, now Pentax 654Z).

67: 100mm macro f4 vs 105mm f2.4 & 165mm f2.8 vs 200mm f4

All four lenses are really good. The 100 mm f/4 Macro is specialized for close-ups but requires very short distances between the subject and the camera and that can lead to awkward situations. My new latest version of the 105 mm f/2.4 is incredibly sharp and better suited for use at infinity. The 165 and 200 are also very sharp and easy to use with great success. The 67 200 mm f/4 was my first lens along with a 67 55 mm f/4 when I started shooting 120 film in 1991 and has always proved to be magnificent. I got a used 67 165 mm f/2.8 much later (in like-new condition) and I like it very much on my 645Z with the Pentax adapter. It is light and affords a brilliant viewing image. Decisions, decisions ... You almost can't go wrong with any modern Pentax 67 lenses.

Pentax 67: just one lens

Thank you for your heartfelt comments. Personnally, I always used Ektar 100 negative film and found the results obtained with the 67 90 mm f/2.8 were disappointing, particularly so after I started using the 75 mm f/2.8 AL. I later used the 67 90 mm with a Pentax adapter on my 645 N with flash for "ambient portraits" and was surprised at how good the results were on Portra 160. For landscapes, I later bought a new 67 105 mm f/2.4 and this lens proved to be amazingly sharp and contrasty compared to the 90 mm and having a somewhat similar field of view and at the same time being quite different from the FOV of the 75 mm. So my opinion is based on my experience with negative film and comparing the 75 mm, the 90 mm and the 105 mm with similar subject matter. Maybe my copy of the 90 mm is sub-standard, I don't know. As they say, f/11 and be there !

Pentax 67: just one lens

I started out my 6X7 system years ago with the latest versions of the 55 mm f/4 and of the 200 mm f/4. Both are tremendous lenses, sharp and contrasty. Over the years, I added a 45 mm f/4, a 90 mm f/2.8, a 105 mm f/2.4, a 100 mm Macro f/4, a 165 mm f/2.8, an M* 300 mm f/4, a 55-100 mm f/4.5 zoom and finally a 75 mm f/2.8 AL. All are excellent lenses. Choosing just one would be heartbreaking but I'd say the 75 mm f/2.8 AL is the most "stellar" of my arsenal. The only one I find disappointing is the 90 mm f/2.8 because of its lack of contrast (I do landscapes).

California has 21 historical missions built by Spanish padres in the 1700's, from San Diego to San Francisco. Each one is a marvel of architecture with arches, tiled roofs, fountains and gardens. San Juan lies North of San Diego in Orange County, along Interstate-5.

If you visit Grand Canyon Nat'l Park, know that the best photo opportunities happen at sunrise and at sunset. At midday, the light is flat, overhead and rather uninteresting.
