Wim Wenders polaroids, and "why [he thinks] photography is now over"

just the ramblings of an old man saddened by the loss of the world of his youth and - as it is always the case - that world never existed in the first place, come on Wim, make photography great again

If you look at the world of photography now, to the number of publications, festivals et cetera you could easily argue that the still image has never been more alive than today.

Hello just got a Helios 44M and though I am using the original Pentax adapter I have no infinity focus and the maximum focus distance I get is circa six feet.
Have I been screwed - sorry, could't resist the pun - or what?

Let me copy and paste from the KP review I have written a few minutes ago

"This is my first camera without a top LCD and I feared I would miss all that useful info with the KP, but I have found out that setting the rear screen to "always on except when you shoot" it's even better than that: more info and - being bigger - easier to read."

Mirrorless camera advantages

We are saying the same thing except for the meaning we give to "DOF control" - APS-C systems are already a limitation in that regard (compared to FF) MFT makes it worse.
I am not trying to discredit the MFT system, I have owned an Olympus EM5II, beautiful camera, lot of great features, but just take a Pentax 50mm 1.4 (mount it on a FF and APS-C camera) and a Panasonic/Leica 25mm 1.4 (mount it on whatever MFT camera you want): your ability to control depth of field will decrease or not? of course it will decrease and that was my point; completely losing depth of field control can look like an exaggeration but that is my opinion based on my experience.

Mirrorless camera advantages

Is it supposed to be a joke? I was only stating the obvious: the f number in a MFT system will give you the same results than with any other system in terms of exposure, but in terms of DOF even if you buy an expensive Leica 25mm 1.4 in DOF terms you get a 2.8 performance, that's not an opinion, that's a fact. For some people it can be fine, but when you are into a thread sharing information, it has to be mentioned. Of course then you can play with the distance between main subject and foreground to obtain a kind of bokeh effect, but the technical limitation remains.

I agree. Every spec in the poll makes sense but It turns out to be useless if I am not comfortable using the camera.

Mirrorless camera advantages

Every camera of the latest generation - no matter if FF, APS-C, MFT and even some of the so called 1 inch sensors - produces stunning images in the hands of the right photographer. The weight issue is overrated, unless you are going with MFT the advantage is negligible and in that case it comes at the cost of completely losing DOF control. And the weight assessment can vary on individual lenses.
Suppose you are into macro photography: the just released Fuji is bigger, heavier and costlier than the Pentax 100mm WR.
Fuji glass - according to most reliable reviews like the ones by Photozone - is mediocre in tha lab tests but - just like with any other digital camera system - the camera software will provide all the necessary (and unnecessary) adjustments.
The results produced by the X-Trans sensor are not everybody's cup of coffee and if you already own a PP software check that it supports Fuji files.
BTW if you want an upgrade why ignoring the latest Pentax generation? no other brand can offer amazing features like Pixel Shift or the high ISO capabilities (in the APS-C realm) of the KP or the K70.
My final suggestion is: rent one before buying one, you will waste less money than realizing within 6 months that you bought into the wrong camera system (talking from painful experience: 5 camera systems in 5 years - returning to Pentax from where I started :D).

KP recommended lenses

Never buy a camera you haven't had a chance to put your hands on. They are tools and being comfortable using them is the essential feature.
Pentax KP versus Fujifilm X-T20 is a tough comparison, do you prefer OVF or EVF? is WR important for you? in camera IS? and the X-T20 is so tiny with all those dials and buttons, I have owned an X-E2, I could never use a camera smaller than that, but that's me. And the X-Trans sensor is another thing to consider when talking Fuji and shooting RAW.
I own the 20-40 limited and I have owned the XF 18-55 and one thing - a very superficial thing, comparing lenses across different systems does not make much sense - I can say: I preferred my XF primes to theXF zoom, when I use the the 20-40 Limited I am totally happy with its performance.

Downgrading from a Nikon D750 to KP or Fuji XT2?

I have recently said farewell to FF, now I own a KP - and I consider it the best camera I've ever had - but the X-T2 was on my shortlist.
The way I see it the KP is a camera developed by Pentax aiming at users loving some features of the CSC world - and the retro styling popularized by Fujifilm and Olympus - but still having a preference for an OVF.
First of all: do you shoot raw? if the answer is yes then consider that Fujifilm's RAW format it is not to everybody's (and every PP software) taste. If you shoot jpeg's only then Fujifilm has an edge, it is not only a matter of settings, in my experience Fujifilm's image processors are better than Pentax's ones dealing with CA, purple fringing and whatever in camera corrections we have come to expect in today's cameras, even Prime IV on the KP cannot compete with Fujifilm on that. When I owned Fujifilm I have shot in absurd lighting conditions and the camera has always delivered amazing and clean jpeg (though - always according to my experience - Fujifilm delivers clean images smudging a lot of detail).
Fujifilm is still expanding its range of lenses but Pentax remains ahead in terms of offerings, the overall quality is similar, Pentax lenses (most of the time) are cheaper.
The OVF it is not the only feature that distinguishes Pentax cameras from Fujifilm: IMO SR and numerous WR lenses are important too.
In the end the choice here is a matter of personal preference for a certain feature, lens or overall ergonomic feeling, so I agree with Rondec: try 'em before buying.

Would you step up from your K3II to the KP if not WHY???

getting rid of a K3II is one thing, being on the fence on both cameras it is an entirely different matter.
Last month I bought a KP, would have I done the same if I had still owned my K3?
Frankly I don't know the answer and the point is that they are very different cameras, the KP isn't a step up but a different kind of camera.
What I know is that we are in 2017 and the K3(II) is an old camera and even at the reduced price you can buy it now IMHO it is not worth buying, we call them cameras, but this is technology, they are computers with lenses, would you buy the 2014 Mac Mini today?
I don't care about what people call cons (battery, top lcd, dual card slots) for the KP, and I love its features (latest technology in terms of sensor, processor, SR, pixel shift and its 3 dials, not to mention the tilting screen) so it was an easy choice for me.
My choice would have been much harder if a K3III would have been out on the market (don't forget: when the K3 II replacement will be available its price will be considerably higher than the KP at that time).
In the end it is your choice, no one knows better than you what are your photographic needs, my suggestion is: find yourself a chance to try the camera before buying: technical specs are one thing, but ergonomics and being at ease with a tool in your hands it is the kind of rating/opinion/evaluation that we can gauge only by our personal experience.

Pentax KP vs K5-ii (Is an upgrade worth it?)

You would love the new sensor, you would not like the battery and card doors (they are fine, they are better than what you get on canikon cameras in this price range, alas Pentax has spoiled its users during the years, so I was a little bit disappointed when I got my hands on my KP, but let me add that beside these small details it is a marvelous camera).

Upgrading to K1 or sticking with APS-C

it does
not all features are equal: we have objective and subjective ones, ergonomics - I guess the top LCD versus rear screen relates to that - is an extremely subjective feature, on this respect reviews and opinions are useless and the only way to ascertain if you are comfortable with a camera's ergonomics is to try it on the field. Since I shoot digital I have always preferred cameras with an LCD on top, now I am in my 4th week with the KP: I wouldn't renounce to the third dial and I'm comfortable with the info on the rear screen, but that's me.
Less power? maybe, but spare batteries are cheap and they occupy less space than spare films years ago :)
Ergonomics comes into the equation when you have to choose between FF and APS-C: after trying FF I have chosen APS-C, I see no difference in the A3+ prints I get from the 2 systems, considering the amazing high ISO capabilities of the KP I am only losing a fraction of DOP control, I can live with that, but then again, that's me :)

Buying a new K5-II in 2017

I see - body only:

K5II 500
K70 600
K3II 750
KP 1250

and I say the choice is between the K70 and the KP, the ISO performance of the new cameras cannot be ignored, but this is my point of view according to my photographic needs, if you can live without the new sensor while you appreciate the build quality and pro features you can find in the K5II and K3II then go for one of them, they were and remain great cameras. One reason to prefer the K3II to the K5 series could be the PLM option, just one lens nowadays, but it makes sense that PLM will be featured in every future Pentax lens and the K5 series is and will remain out of the game on this regard.

mirrorless is trendy
Nikon for sure has lost customers to Fujifilm et cetera
a Nikon mirrorless could stop the hemorrhage and even win back some customers

There is profit in the ILC camera market, if Sony is continuing to aggressively invest even in a shrinking market ...
Pentax itself demonstrates why there is money and profit in the ILC: have you ever wondered why Pentax offers WR, 100% viewfinder and tons of pro features in every camera? because they cost nothing in terms of production costs: pro cameras are HUGELY over-priced.

It seems you are into telephoto lenses, if you want to go FF you will need bigger and costlier lenses to achieve the same focal range you are enjoying now on APS-C: is it worth the economical and physical effort?
You have mentioned the 7DmarkII, in terms of speed it would be an improvement, no doubt about that, it would't be so in terms of resolution and overall quality of the RAW files.
Basically your motivation to switch brand is wrong, if you are willing for real to follow the rumors, the only safe brand to buy today would be Sony.
If you are satisfied with your Pentax equipment, then stay with Pentax, if you don't like the KP or the K70, wait for Pentax next camera.

I confirm it works.
What else could it be then?

---------- Post added 07-06-17 at 03:30 PM ----------

I have tried everything, even cleaning the contacts, but to no avail.
Even if AF is almost inaudible, an out of focus image in the viewfinder and no reaction when you try to focus it is a clear signal that it is not working, or not?
There was some kind of communication between camera and lens since the aperture could be set.
