HD DA Limited Lenses Weather Resistance

I live in Vancouver, the greenest and perhaps rainiest metropolis in Canada. I got the 15, 21, 40, and 70mm DA Limiteds and I used them a lot here where the rainy season can last for more than 6 months. They do get lightly wet but I make make sure they do not get really drenched. So far I have not had any problem with any of them.

Stories behind lens purchases

It was summer last year while leisurely surfing the internet I decided to check out craigslist to indulge in my growing LBA. I saw a rather blurry picture of what was described as "camera stuff gathering dust in my basement." Then the seller said, "Make an offer."

From the badly underexposed photo, I knew the camera was the ubiquitous ME with the 50mm/f2. The other item had a lens cap saying Tokina. It looked like a prime lens and came with what looked like a teleconverter.

I emailed the lady advertizing and asked for details about the Tokina. She emailed back saying the front barrel says "Tokina ATX Macro 90mm." Then she added it came with a second piece called Macro Extender. It was the famed Bokina!!!

I did a quick eBay search and there was only one Bokina with the matching extender in K mount available for US$599 exclusive of shipping. I saw two others in Nikon mount for comparable prices. I offered $75 Canadian and was expecting her to email back with the F word.

She did not reply till 16 minutes later (felt like eternity though). "Come pick it up tomorrow."

We agreed to meet after my work next day. But she was very very late. While waiting I was imagining that she had checked eBay and discovered she was about to commit the biggest financial blunder of her life. I wanted to call her but forgot to ask for her telephone and she wasn't replying to my emails.

Finally after over an hour, she showed up oblivious to her being so late. She handed me the original box and inside was the gleaming hard case of the Bokina. Inside was a brand new looking lens. Nonchalantly she quipped, "Oh by the way, I just used it a few times for my university research in the summer. Never used it since then."

Have you ever thought of the 55 mm f/1.8 Super / SMC Takumar? It will make a great portrait lens on a cropped sensor like the K3's. The bokeh it generates is beautiful. I prefer it to my M 50mm f/1.7.

This DA 12-24mm zoom is my go to lens when traveling. It does generate some interesting distortion.

The halibut fish and chips there are fantastic. Be sure to visit Victoria in Vancouver Island of these days.

Do you recall how much you paid Eric to get yours repaired? I might consider sending mine since I love this macro very much.

Thanks.

Pentax 100mm 4.0 SMC Macro Lens Haze Cleaning

I bought mine a year and a half ago and right away I noticed that the front element was sort of hazy. The seller told me that it wasn't fungus but the deterioration of the balsam/cement used to glue the first two front glass elements. Apparently this is a common problem to this macro. The good news is ... it does not seem to affect image quality as far as I can tell. In fact, it has produced some wonderful macro images under different lighting condition. One thing I have noticed though is its tendency to flare inordinately when used for landscape shots with the sun in the frame or close to the frame. Perhaps that is related to the haze. Nevertheless, I love this lens given its razor-sharp resolution, high colour contrast, and pleasing bokeh.

I have this lens and definitely it is parfocal in the non-macro mode. It does appear that the OP's copy has a mechanical problem. It is definitely not a "stack of primes" but pretty close to it. The only thing that prevents me from using it more often regularly is its heft. Otherwise, the image quality is amazing for such a zoom with so many elements.

I used to play golf a lot and I know from experience that the finish, feel, and acoustic properties of golf clubs do affect the way people play. I can say that my best scores were achieved with my best clubs. I do not know if the same holds true for the use of photographic equipment. I can tell you, nevertheless, that the heft and precision of my purely metal-and-glass SMC/Super Takumars, K, M, and DA Limited lens DO inspire me to take better pictures. There is nothing wrong with my other DAs and A series lenses (the first to incorporate plastic parts) but somehow their toy-like feel, wobble (for DAs), and sound take away the "X Factor" that my other lenses have. And not surprisingly ... the best photos I've taken were with my legacy and Limited glasses. Coincidence?
