What single thing improved your photography the most?

Immediate thoughts :

- Using primes makes me improve a lot, because as says Anne-Laure JACQUART : "cadrer, c'est couper", translation : "framing (or composing) is cuting". What I understand is that there is no need to include the most things in the field, or a global subject, just "cut" in it.

- Recently : Pentax Forums

- In the past : Black and white film photography, all manual gear from camera (Olympus OM1), by film development, to enlargement .... (you have to think every action or else you can lose a whole film, or worst case, the cover of an event ... pressure also makes improvement)

- Reading a lot of photo books, national geographic, geo, magazines, social networks photos, Pentax Forums, ...

- understanding the LIGHTs

- "thinking" photo all the day, even missing the camera

Anyway, searching to improve has been, is actually, and will always be an endless quest (the most difficult actually is to definite an own style, line or "personality")

Post scriptum : well eeh ... having FUN

Hello Racer,
I wonder if the Sigma is not a little brighter and sharper on your samples ... Is it your feeling too ?

On my side I received the tiny SMC Pentax-m 28mm F3.5. It's a very nice lens, not much used, almost mint and optically very good.

Is it as sharp as my Sigma super wide II 24mm ? sometimes yes, sometimes better ?, can't say. But so different in fact. It's not a fast lens, colors are deep, and rendering is like argentics (even mounted on K70). I find the same kind of colours on my 50mm F4 Takumar, same "3d" effect.

I can't always reach the red dot at infinity focus even though horizon is perfect when closing the aperture ring between F8 to F11, seems it's perfectly adjusted (for argentic times).
Every manual control is smooth with a feeling of solidity.

The lack of automatic aperture is disapointing at first on this lens, use of the green button (for exposure) is needed and full manual (focus + mode) too. It's like "Back to the Future", another type of photography, with more time needed and economy of the fire button. But real art, and very relaxing.

Having a good exposure becomes a challenge.

28mm (42mm equiv) is a very nice angle of view.

(it stays on the camera from now)

Hello goatsNdonkey !
It's a question for me too (Jonathan, do you mean there is a lack of 3D rendering, or flat colours ?)

I want to feedback why I have choosen to try 28mm on apsc ... I enjoy very much the idea of a 42 mm equivalent, it's the first reason. I find 50 mm (35mm apsc) equivalent a little stretch for everyday photo, and sometimes (less often) 35 mm equivalent (my 24mm sigma super wide II MF) a little little wide. I guess and hope 42mm equiv will be a very nice compromise ... above all with a little vintage "Pentax" lens ... It's on the road but I don't really know the condition of the lens, so ... wait and see.

For the moment, until now,..., and I am trying more and more lenses from old (even russian ones) to modern, from zooms to primes, even if each lens is remarkable in its range of use, I have to say that my most polyvalent, sharp, versatile, smoothy to use, from macro to landscape (and indeed very very good for landscapes), is still the Sigma 24mm Super Wide II macro MF. It is wonderful, marvelous, superlative, ... :):):) I wish him a long life !

Jonathan, I liked very much too the rendering of your shots taken with the mini wide II, flare is not an issue for me (coming from argentic photography), but I wanted to see what the Pentax is capable of.

Hi, sorry for the irrelevance, but yesterday I fell for a 28 mm Pentax-m F3.5 (not the best K version), a little dusty, and won the auction (for about the price of a Sigma 28 delivery cost included). Money goes to an health foundation, so I won't be able to compare but Yay too !!! thank you Jonathan for your answer, hope it will be sharp enough !

Thank you Jonathan and RacerX69,
Sharpness is my first condition generally dealing with lenses, but if I am right, the Pentax is nicer to use, strong and with a better coating. A is a comfortable option too ...
Sigma is cheaper and sharp ...
I see more flowers and macros with your Sigma than the Pentax ? is it closer ?

It will be difficult to choose and to find

Hello Racer !

well done,

what's your opinion about the mini wide 28 ?, it was on my wish list for its ration price/performance but I read everything in comparison with Pentax 28 mm _a or _m ...

bye

This rose photo was taken at the end of the day, during the last heat wave, a few days ago.
The nectar is the start point of a "golden" spiral from orange to rose pastel colors.
The mix between the Pentax K5 camera and the Takumar 50mm macro 1:1 makes a not too sharp - not to blurry photography, which is well suited for this bucolic image

Did you increase color saturation ? this is a perfect blue ;) indeed. This Fujinon is excellent, it seems like a gear you are used to use actually !
