Weak Pop-Up Flash Lock?

Hey everyone,

I've noticed many times my hand would brush against the side of my K-5's flash, causing it to pop up. I'm not hitting the button, just the actual flash piece itself; the lock seems to be very weak. Does this happen to any of you?

Edit: Just found a relating thread pertaining to the K-7. Sorry if this an old topic; my previous searches didn't yield any results.

Viewfinder doesn't match final image

While shooting around with my new K-5 this week, on many occasions I would notice an image I snapped had a crooked crop compared to what I composed in the viewfinder. It seems it will only happen randomly, while working fine part of the time. It also seems to malfunction regardless of whether or not Horizon Correction is enabled. Below, I've attached a quick snap displaying the problem. I saw all of the left corner of the station with a little room to spare in the viewfinder, and the horizon was completely horizontal. This was a handheld shot with Horizon Correction off, but I know for sure my composition wasn't that off as you see below.

Also, with this photo and many others, I've noticed much more image blur than with my K-x. With the K-x I could shoot 1/20 handheld and get a decent shot, but with the K-5 with SR enabled, I'm still finding noticeable motion blur at 1/50 and 1/60.

Will I just have to return it for a new one?

Thanks,

Kevin

I absolutely love this image! Even though the camera settings weren't optimal, capturing that candid moment is much more important than fiddling around with the camera settings and potentially losing the spark in her face, IMO.

Compressing Images

I recently did a casual shoot for a friend, and I want to send him the pictures. Every time I've tried compressing the folder to a .zip file though, it ends up being about the same size as the original, and it's much too large to email. Is there any way I can go about this, or am I just limited to putting them on a thumb drive and handing it to him personally?

Thanks!

K-7 or lighting?

One thing to keep in mind is where you will keep this potential lighting equipment once you are stuck in a dorm room in college.

Plus, many universities already offer lots of studio space with more than adequate equipment, reducing the need for your own personal set until after college.

People Homemade Pinhole Self Portrait

We've started off my high school photography class by making pinhole cameras and developing the images, and it's been a blast! Today my dad and I stocked up on developing chemicals, dusted off his equipment, and I spent the day taking and developing more pinhole images. I thought I'd share a 45-second self portrait I took in my backyard. Please excuse the finger prints, haha :)

I absolutely love working in the dark room; I can't wait to start using 35mm negatives along with the photograph paper!

Excited for Photography Class!

I just started my last semester of high school, and I am particularly excited about the photography class I'm in. I'm glad I'll get to put my ME Super to more use!

This year the teacher is allowing students to try digital halfway through the semester, but I have a feeling the free access to a dark room plus the experience of developing my own film will make me stay with film all semester long.

We're also going to make DIY pinhole cameras next week; I can't wait!

It's the same DA L version I believe. The optics are the same as the DA, it just has a plastic mount and no quickshift.

Poll: Which "conformist" FAST lens would you like Pentax to have?

My vote is for the 18-300mm 1.4!

Wait a minute. . . .

nevermind

In all seriousness though, I think the most practical would be to bring back the FA 50/1.7, but a fast yet reasonably affordable portrait lens in the 60-80mm range would be great, too.

ME Super or K1000SE?

I love the solid build of the K1000, but the ME Super is still built well and held comfortably. The ME Super's aperture priority mode can be handy, but one reason I occasionally shoot film is to slow down, and favor the K1000's simpler manual operation. Plus, as you guessed, those two buttons aren't the easiest to use.

All in all, I love both cameras, but if I could choose again I would have given my girlfriend the ME Super and kept the K1000 to myself

Edit: The exposure compensation feature on the ME Super is really useful for multiple exposures, which I'm starting to experiment more with.

I'm not quite sure, but I believe the K-x will only trigger an external flash at shutter speed 1/180.

Short zoom or prime?

Thank you for all the suggestions, everyone. I'm still considering the 35/2.4, but I'll need to play around with that length on my kit lens a little more. If I do get it, it'll probably be with my own money sometime after Christmas. The Tamron 28-70 seems to have a lot of potential too. As suggested by NaClH2O in a different thread, I used ExposurePlot to graph my focal length usage:

The consistency around 24-43mm tells me that I may like the 35/2.4 or 40/2.8 more than I think. It does spike at 55mm though, probably showing that I shoot at 55mm with cropping later. The 28-70 would help in both of these areas.

When I shoot film however, I love my 28mm, which the spike at 18mm backs up. I would love to go wider, and the DA 15/4 looks enticing.

I think the DA 15 and the Tamron 28-70 would compliment each other well for my kit. Maybe I could ask for one for Christmas, and save up for the other for later. I'm leaning toward the DA 15 since I already have the 18-55; what do you think?

Short zoom or prime?

Good point. On top of being much better IQ, I would probably be more inclined to use a prime during casual walk-arounds if it were autofocus, too. . .

It does look promising, and I still have the 50/1.7 for artistic DOF, but I find that I don't like the "normal" field of view too much when shooting digital. If I decide to ask for a prime, it will probably be in the 50-70 range.

Short zoom or prime?

I currently have the 18-55 kit lens, and an M 50/1.7. I've found myself needing a fast auto focus prime, but almost always when shooting for my school newspaper staff, which will end in a few weeks. Outside of that, my M 50/1.7 suffices for most of my needs when I can take the time to manually focus. I'm debating whether to still ask for a F/FA 50 1.7/1.4 or an upgrade from my kit lens like the DA 16-45 or 17-70 for Christmas. I like the leeway short zooms give me when walking around and shooting, but I'm also interested in Pentax's impressive primes, and auto focus is a big plus for me. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

I couldn't get that sky to cooperate, so I cropped it! :D Then I played around with the colors, added a little contrast, and slightly desaturated it.

Want to move on from Kodak Gold

I've had to stop shooting film since I was broke for a few months, but now I can afford film and processing again. So far I've only shot Kodak Gold 200, and the colors have disappointed me. Do you have any recommendations of a certain film you like? I'm not looking for any specific color rendition; I just want to try something new. Thank you!

P-TTL flash - is it necessary ?

I read somewhere that it only has P-TTL when positioned straight forward, losing it when bounced. Is that true?

Difference between P-TTL and Auto?

I've been playing around with a manual bounce flash from my newspaper class, and it has sparked an interest in getting my own. I've done research though, and I still can't quite understand the difference between P-TTL flashes and non P-TTL ones that have "auto" modes. In the AF 280T Review, bdery said "In auto mode, it works flawlessly. The camera detects the flash, adjusts the exposure time and aperture accordingly (in P mode), and syncs as expected."

What would the difference between this auto mode and a P-TTL flash be? I only plan on using a flash on-camera or handheld/bracketed, not with any other flashes, if that matters.

Thank you

Lensbaby help?

I own the Composer and it's a really good combination of speed and control. You just tilt it in the socket to adjust your sweet spot, and twist a focus ring just like any other lens. Once you tilt it in the direction you want, you don't need to hold it in that position, letting you focus more on. . . well, focusing! Plus, since it can be difficult to accurately focus with a lensbaby anyway, the Composer allows me to take 3-4 image bursts while minutely adjusting the focus in each shot to help guarantee the sharpest focus.

Misc Isolation

I just wanted to share some shots from the portfolio I'm building for college applications, with a central theme of isolation/detachment. I went to the National Portfolio Review Day in Nashville yesterday, and to my relief my photos were well received by many college representatives!
