ah ah , :-) yes I have my glasses on, but it was early morning before going to work , and the caffeine of espresso was not yet in action.

For us having the DFA*70-200, the DFA*85 f2.8 is already inside, no need to buy.

It's amazing how many discussions of new lenses degenerate into people imagining what the perfect lens for them would be.

One of my photography teachers once said, " Find the lens you love, buy the camera it goes on." He said nothing about sitting around imagining what the perfect lens might be. That in no way improves your photography. :D

Only a new update in the FF teaser can take us away from this meaningless vicious cycle of sensor performance. To be true I've also stopped reading this thread because I find it hard to understand and of very little interest the controversy. Everyone knows what he needs for his kind of photography and that doesn't change. Cool down everybody and enjoy your hobby or your profession for some of you!

Pentax K-3 II Officially Announced

I dont undertand the bug with OBF . The moment you will put a Zoom lenses on the camera and you decide to use OBF, you will get shadow. A very small % of peoples use prime lense as their main lenses. The kit come with 3 typezoom. Without a OBF , chance of user mistake using flash with zoom is reduce. And imagine if you have a hood???
Ricoh was smart

Report from CP+ 2015

Here are some impressions of CP+, which I had the chance to go to this morning. It was very busy, with people of all ages and a healthy number of women visitors, compared to some of the pictures of camera shows in other countries. I was only really interested in the Ricoh/Pentax relevant stuff, so you'll have to look elsewhere for information about other brands.

The Ricoh Booth

Ricoh had a decent sized booth, about the same size as previous years. There was a large area on the ground floor where they were highlighting their current products and a smaller upstairs gallery where you could try telephoto lenses and binoculars. Overall, it was OK and there were certainly more people than two years ago, when I last went. I think Ricoh should really do a better job of showcasing photography. Other manufacturers had better photos and most of them were printed bigger. Ricoh only had really big prints from the 645z, as if they were trying to say that it’s the only camera that justifies huge prints. The only problem with that was that just across the aisle, Panasonic was showing more interesting photos even bigger from their GH4 camera, with no lack of clarity. So my feedback to Ricoh would be - better photos, more varied photos and bigger photos. Having said that, they were a bit short of space because they had so much gear to exhibit.

DFA* 70-200 & DFA 150-450

I didn’t spend long with these, because I have no interest personally in such big lenses. My interest was more in the AF system, because I hope it will find its way into some of the smaller lenses. The AF really does feel faster than DA* lenses. It felt very quick on a K-3. The focus buttons on the DFA 150-450 are pretty useful. Some people are going to love these lenses.

Full Frame Camera & Future Lenses

I don’t think there is any need to post another picture of the full frame mock-up. Other visitors were comparing it in size to their K-3s, and it is basically the same size when you look at it from the top. The viewfinder hump is clearly a lot bigger than the APS-C cameras, though.

I was in a group of people talking to Kawauchi-san about the camera. He was very chatty (not at all like he comes across on the videos) and was obviously pleased to be able to talk about it. He would not divulge any more information about the specs, and a lot of the conversation centred around lens compatibility. It seems that they have not yet decided how to deal with the crop mode. They are aware that some DA lenses could be used, but they are mindful of people complaining about vignetting. I think they have honestly not decided exactly how to implement it. Significantly, they have not yet reached the stage of testing for compatibility of each lens with a prototype, and Kawauchi-san mentioned that you could not just assume that lenses that work OK on film cameras will be acceptable on the full frame camera because of the wider circle required for SR. I think he unwittingly confirmed that the body will have SR, but it also implied that the body is several months off.

He talked about Ricoh’s attitude to the roadmap. He said they won’t put anything on it unless it is definitely going to be made, and there is no point in putting things that are too far in the future. So the good news is that everything you can see on there is definitely coming.

K-S2 and the DA 18-50 Retractable Kit Lens

I liked the K-S2 body. It felt good in the hand and very compact. Build quality is fine, but no better than the K-50. I was impressed with the flip-out screen. It folds back very flat into the camera, so you don’t feel any increase in thickness over the previous models. A bit like the K-S1, I still feel that the buttons on the back are a bit too far recessed to press easily.

The new kit lens is very neat. It looks like a DA limited, but the diameter is actually quite a bit larger and it is all plastic. The mechanism for extending the lens is easy to use and the lens zooms without too much friction. Autofocus is quick and silent (finally!). One interesting thing is that the camera’s firmware will detect that the lens is retracted and display a message in screen. This behaviour will be added to the K-3 in a firmware update, but other models are yet to be confirmed. I would expect the K-S1 to get it at the very least. According to Saiki-san, the autofocus system in the K-S2 is not identical to the K-5 II, even though the basic specs look the same.

I was able to try out a VR headset that allowed you to view a 360 video “from the inside”. This was very cool. There was less lag than you would expect, but I had to take my glasses off to put the headset on, which meant the image was blurry through no fault of the viewing system. Even without sound it felt very immersive. I recommend trying it if you ever get the chance.

Third-party Lens Makers

The picture above says it all. I asked at the Tokina and Cosima booths about support for Pentax and they said there were no plans to support it. I got a similar response about the Sigma 24mm, although of course Sigma does make the 35mm in the same range for Pentax, so you would think there is some hope. Tamron was a joke! The guy I spoke to thought that Pentax used micro four thirds and tried to show me them (Edit: this is not the guy in the picture). When I got another guy to speak to, he did at least know about K-mount, but he was only able to show me a chart the confirmed just how few of their models are available in K-mount.

Cutting things in half

Sawing equipment in half is getting really boring now. Almost every exhibitor had things cut in half. Pentax had cut a 645z in half, along with a few lenses. Cosina had every single one of their lenses cut in half. It made me think, “Why don’t you stop cutting things in half and start making your lenses for K-mount again?”

Three new lenses at once

When was the time when somebody saw Pentax presenting three new K mount lenses at once? Not counting DA 645 28-45mm.

I am asking because there is a lot of debate about the future FF camera, the Ricoh strategy for Pentax, and the future of Pentax system in general. And I must confess that I had my own moments when I was asking myself if Pentax was the right choice. Just before Photokina, when it seems that the only new thing in the K system will be the K-S1, I was thinking that maybe it's better to make a change to another, more dynamic, more complete system.

But Photokina has came, and with it, those three new K-mount lenses.

Look at it closely. Not upgraded lenses, not some third party lenses rebranded by Pentax, not new design of some old lenses. But totally new Pentax lenses. Even that their are just unfinished prototypes, they have a meaning, IMO. That things are changing, that Ricoh begin to push the pedal strongly, and it's committed to deliver what they said sometimes before, to bring Pentax in the firsts 3 on the market.

Yes, is a long way forward, a lot of new lenses are needed for a FF system, other new products to compete with Canon and Nikon, and even more to be as dynamic as Sony. Yes, this will not happen in one day, or in one month. But I think that in one year the change will be clear.

Don't you think so? Tell me when was the last time when Pentax has presented three totally new K lenses at once.

Photokina 2014: Ricoh confirm full frame camera is coming in 2015

I've been to Photokina today and spoke with a lot of people from a lot of companies. I expressed that I had hoped to see an FF model from Pentax and multiple times I got extremely encouraging hints that the FF model is coming.

Additionally, one just needs to look at the size of the new "mystery" zooms to realise that these cannot possibly be just APS-C lenses.

In summary, while I was disappointed to not see an FF model at Photokina, I think it would be a huge surprise if the FF model weren't released sometime in 2015. People actually agreed with my statement that if the release is much more delayed then they might as well not do it at all.

P.S.: I had the pleasure and honour to meet Mr. Hiraku Kawauchi and Mr. Kazunobu Saiki in person and talk to them for a while. They are extremely polite and kind gentlemen who took time to listen to me. It took a moment to get my point fully across but they were so kind and made sure that they understood what I had to say and I very much thank them for that.

At this point, it's difficult for me to imagine that they have any kind of specific beliefs, direction, or even concrete ideas guiding them. It just seems like they like to release a general hodgepodge of products, some good, some great, some not so great, and see what happens.

The one thing that does not appear to be going on is that they pay any attention whatsoever to what their most ardent fans are interested in.

Well I think it's brilliant. A tiny (smallest ever??), reasonably full-featured entry-level DSLR? Who cares about aesthetics? Why get fussed about a few kitsch LED's?

Sell it by the bucketload at a Rebel-killing price and hook a new generation into K-mount = WIN.

Pentax forum questions for Ricoh at Photokina
Posted By Heie

1) It is no secret that the strength of any photographic system lies not with the camera bodies but more importantly in the lenses. What is your current vision regarding "Pentax" as a collection of systems (aka different mounts)?

2) What infrastructure development has Ricoh invested in and is planning to invest in to meet the increased production demands of late and projected demands?

3) It has been officially stated before that Ricoh plans to not only be a competitor in the global imaging industry, but the competitor. Ricoh Imaging makes fantastic products, however a unanimous complaint of the Ricoh/Pentax userbase is that no one knows about them except us. What plans do you have to catalyze increased brand recognition with Ricoh Imaging products?

4) With the 645Z and the K-3, you have done a phenomenal job of building on Pentax's legacy of class-leading products that can also keep up amid Mother Nature's wrath. With an increasing global market and prioritization of adventure sports, activities, and lifestyles -- all of whom require being in the outdoors, a place that lends itself to Pentax's forte and apparent monopoly among DSLR's -- what are your plans to catalyze marketing initiatives and partnerships in conjunction with outdoor groups, clubs, retailers, etc.?

5) There are deeply entrenched perceptions among your user base that the Japanese market is all that Ricoh seems to care about, with the rest of the world a mere after thought. One clear example of this was the scarce availability of 645 system lenses because, until very recently, they were completely unavailable outside of Japan. What have you done to place a greater imperative on not only critical markets such as USA and Europe, but emerging markets with high densities of rising wealth, namely Brazil, India, and China?

6) What are you doing to go all Armageddon and sh!t against the imminent Ricohpocalypse? Cuz, like.....PentaxisDoomed bro.

Pentax 645Z Officially Announced

@aristophanes et al -- following Henry Ford's Model T price-lowering approach, what price do you think would GREATLY increase sales, and still make Ricoh a profit, taking into account lower costs from volume production? More to the point, do you think that if the price were greatly reduced... like to $3,995... would there be a huge upswing in sales? Or -- and please don't laugh -- would the price have to drop below $1000 before you can sell into a high-volume market?

EDIT -- re comment above -- (stupid) people buying a k-500 instead of a D3100? Seems like they're smart to me. And, following this high-low concept... could Ricoh make a 'low-end' K-500-type stripped-down version of the 645Z... and sell it for $2,995?

I also use the ee-s focusing screen plus recently I got the o-me 53 magnifying eyecup which helps a bit. I consider both of them a marginal help but for the most your eyes have to be able to do the job plus It is crucial to nail the shims with the focusing screen.

Hi friends, 5 shots with this lens (pre-prod model) + K-3, hold in Current Paris's "salon de la photo 2013" :

20mm f/2.8

31mm f/4

31mm f/4.5

40mm f/4

40mm f/7.1

White balance is difficult in subtle lighting.
But for me, it's a true limited lens :)
It looks very sharp, and has a nice bokeh.

Plus, it looks very nice on K-3 silver :
