I use small low powered flashes mounted off camera for macro. You can find good flash for macro dirt cheap on ebay. I like old Nikon SB-18's. You have to use them manually, but once you understand how to work with them they are well worth the 15.00 you spend for one on the bay. No TTL but I never found that option necessary.

Well, my K10D is still working perfectly, so the life of the camera is fairly generous for the active amateur.

Is there a silver bullet for great colors?

I always crop, noise reduction, clip the black point, clip the white point, then work on color. Pretty much sums up my work flow for the most part. Monitor should be calibrated and eliminate any unwanted light noise in your room.

Actually, I was holding my KP and putting my eye to the viewer so she started to mimic what I was doing. :)

---------- Post added 12-17-19 at 09:14 PM ----------

She understands that cameras take pictures, she just wasn't sure how this gadget worked. She helps me gather things for my camera bag and is very inquisitive about what I am doing. I show her photos from my camera all the time. I have a feeling she's going to take up the hobby eventually.

This is something I would really like to work on. I have never done much portrait work. Getting the eyes and skin tones perfect seems to be a real challenge for me. I took a few of my daughter for graduation. As I said, improvement is needed, I just need to practice.

Natural light with a K10D and Fujinon 135 EBC lens.

Zoos: your thoughts about them and how useful for photography?

I'm on the fence about zoo's. I hate to see wild animals caged and put on exhibit. I don't condemn or look down upon zoo's, I simply feel their may be a better way.

It's only a game folks. There is nothing unethical going on. If you want to play that is entirely up to the individual, if you want to spend that is entirely up to you. They designed this game to make money, just like any game on the internet, they just found a way to use photography as a game.

MossyRocks, you are not going to get critiqued on GURU, it doesn't work that way, it's not about being a good photographer or getting better at photography, it's about exposure and where you photo sits in the thousands of photos entered into each game category. When people vote they get credit which post their photo's in a better position for exposure. People will vote blindly, just clicking away to get credit and keep their photos in a higher position. It's just a game of clicking, that's about it. You need to watch and click, hour upon hour.

I play all the time. For me. it's just casual fun and it is just a game. There really is no merit for being a great photographer, as explained by the OP it's all about exposure. I would like to make a point about swapping, you do take a chance when you do this because you lose points that were gained from a particular photo in hopes that a new photo will do better, and sometimes this may not be the case.

I've been sitting at Expert for about 8 months, but I just let the game play it's course. I have no desire to reach the loftiness of GURU, if it happens, OK, but no big deal. I will not waste money at GURU so the odds of advancing above my current status is minimal. As stated, I play for fun, and I always know and accept that it's truly a game not a contest. Some rather mediocre photos advance to positions they wouldn't earn in a photo contest, but in a game, hey, everything is fair.

I ignore their messages of having my photos in an exhibit because they have earned the right. Just pay 7.00 to fill out the application, blah, blah, blah. It's all about taking your money.

Playing to win will cost money just like any internet game.

For folks on a budget GIMP can't be beat, but I never use it. PS is more than enough for me. I have Aftershot Pro and Paintshop Pro and never use either.

As far as the sharpen process, I'm from the same school as pschlute, I have been taught to do so last.

Some people think everybody and everything is doomed. I seen post about Sony and Nikon being doomed. It's all speculation and opinion's. It's all quite silly.
