K-01 - why did it not suceed?

The K-01 was never meant for the kind of the person that would frequent a camera forum like this one. It was meant to appeal to a younger, hipper crowd, thus the hiring of Marc Newson for the project. I loved the looks of it from day 1, and it's actually held up better (aesthetically-speaking) than other cameras from that era. It was doomed due to the one thing that appealed to folks in this forum - it's K-mount compatibility. That resulted in a camera too big for people cross-shopping Sony NEX, Olympus, or others. The timing was tough too, right when phones were becoming the snapshot tool of choice.

In the end, it tried to be too many things to too many people and succeeded at none. That said, I'm never selling mine.

I've got the Nikon 70-300 CX lens for use with the Nikon 1. I've got it paired to a J5, and that combo is pretty good for birding and wildlife but would be better with an EVF. Likewise the Q-S1 that I have paired with the 55-300 with the adapter. For both, I need to use a loupe to be able to track objects at long focal lengths.

There are Nikon 1 models with EVFs, namely the V1, V2, and V3. Pentax would have needed to produce a Q with an EVF and a PKA-Q adapter with good AF for the target audience being discussed.

The Fermi Paradox is an interesting analysis of why we haven't been visited by aliens yet...

Fermi paradox - Wikipedia

Last year, my friend was planning a trip to Africa and I helped him purchase a camera for this once-in-a-lifetime trip. Based on his needs and budget, he ended up with the Sony RX10 III. Before he left, we met in the park to give him some instruction/practice with his new toy before his big trip. I rode to the park with a motorcycle I was reviewing so that he'd have some practice photographing a moving target.

I'd never touched the camera before, so it took some time figuring it out. It's DSLR-size superzoom with a 1" sensor. While playing around, I managed this shot, which the magazine designer chose as the opening 2-page spread:

After some practice, my friend even managed to get this action shot that ended up being published

He had a great trip and came back with some photos that he's printed and framed, so overall a success.

I have a Kushitani perforated leather motorcycle jacket that looks a little like the leather in that photo. Perforated leather was a thing in motorcycling around 15-20 years ago. Not as much now.

Vecnos - A new Ricoh spin-off brand for 360 cameras

I've been shooting and sharing 360 content since the Theta SC, and one of the things that I'v learned is that sharing 360 content is cool and fun but shooting 360 and then framing and sharing as flat images will get more views. The image quality is pretty bad - I'd never print with a 360 image - but it's certainly good enough for an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy, which, if we're looking at the data, is where most content is consumed these days.

For example, this was shot with a 360 camera (Insta 360 One X) and then edited in Adobe Premiere Pro:

You Tube

What's increasing popular is taking a 360 photo and framing it in an usual way:

The road to Paso de Futalefú

Or, with an app, turning a 360 photo into a short animated video that's perfect for Instagram, Tik Tok, etc...
(not sure if this will work...)

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6i7xN1nlEa/

The key is workflow - getting the photo from the device to the phone and then onto social media needs to be as easy as possible or else the product will fail. Trouble connecting the device to the phone, slow transfers, slow apps, buggy apps, etc... will surely kill the product. The Theta app is good in some ways, bad in others. It needs to be improved. Instant connectivity would be a game changer too.

If they can do that with Vecnos, they might have a small hit on their hands.

Be sure to Like, Tweet, and Share these blog posts. In addition to Page Views, that's how Ricoh will measure the success of this new way of marketing (for them) and decide whether or not it is worth continuing the effort.

I take the Pentax Q hiking and biking. Two bodies, three zooms ranging from 18-200mm (35mm equivalent) plus a fast 50.

Most of my hiking and biking photos are for personal online sharing anyways, not publication, although I have had shots with the Q published.

I have cameras that offer this functionality and I use it from time to time. It does add a layer of complexity to the shooting situation though - take out phone, launch app, establish connection - along with also managing phone battery life. This use case is fine for when the camera is on a tripod and you are taking some time with a shot, not so much in fast moving situations or simple snapshots.

I quickly took one into Photoshop and it processed quite nicely. A surprising amount of detail, sharp in the center, with just a little chromatic aberration along the edges. Very usable.

I shoot RAW because I need the quality for publishing. But I also need decent wireless transfer speeds for transferring JPGs from my camera to phone in the field for quick posting on social media.

The workflow on the phone is fast but problematic because I’m often doing quick edits in less than ideal light on a small, uncalibrated screen. Because of this, sometimes the processing is crap.

Transferring to a laptop is an option but it’s slower-I need to take out and fire up the laptop, transfer the images, connect to wifi or my hotspot, post, then put it all away. I’d hate doing that 4-6 times a day.

So from my perspective, ultimate IQ and fast wireless transfer aren’t at odds; it’s the reality of many working pros.

I've got a soft spot for unloved cameras like the K-01. It always produced publication-worthy images for me with its lovely sensor. And I think its unique look was stood the test of time. Perhaps a K-02 can be Pentax's video-centric camera, with top APS-C video specs, or maybe even FF!

I really hope that Ricoh catches up in video quality. It would be great to have a 1" sensor with great 5.6K video!

I may have to dust off the V and give it another shot. I switched to the Insta 360 One X because of superior image stabilization:

I recently purchased a Insta360 OneX from my brother. The still image quality is a step behind the Ricoh V but the video image quality (particularly the stabilization) is pretty incredible.

Note that the camera is directly mounted to the handlebars of a twin cylinder motorcycle! Impressive. The workflow, however, is pretty tedious, and I prefer the usability of the Theta.

The video gets all shaky as I ride beside some trees. I suspect that the image stabilization is freaking out.
