That's painted in almost photographic grey. Steam engines when outshopped were often painted grey so that photos could be taken to give better results on B&W film.

Yes, I wasn't really worried. They ended up updating the website with expected delivery dates although that tended to oscillate a bit. Again, anything in stock always arrives a day or two after placing the order. The only thing I couldn't quite grasp was that the special price for the KP body + GPS was the same price for the body by itself! And those prices were well below retail and, given the exchange rate, better than international sources. I await the next specials!

Yes. With the Pentax 12-24 at a VW Kombi event. But I've always used a grip on the *istD, and K7 so I'm used to and prefer the setup. I had to photograph a gundog retrieving trial without the grip (was till waiting delivery) and with the Sigma 70-200 plus 2x converter and that was ok so I can't say the grip is essential (although I did use a monopod) but it would have been preferable in that situation. As they say, your mileage may vary!

My grip finally arrived. It was back ordered for quite a few months. Suits the camera well and the larger bolt on hand grip that came with it makes things even easier.

Yes, I just picked up the KP + GPS and back ordered the grip. Was tempted by the K1 but a recent expensive vet bill put a damper on that... But our Spaniel is doing well.

I use exiftool on my Mac to update all the necessary fields (camera, lens etc.). It's a command line utility and works well.

CR2's or FG grip?

I managed to pick up the grip for $US20 a few years ago. With an existing pile of eneloops it made sense. I agree it would be the best approach especially if you can get the grip for the right price...

Interesting thread. I have a couple of folders but this one and a Wester Atlasix are in pristine condition...

Spotmatic F/A3000 lens switching

Is it an early Takumar or a later Super Takumar? If it is the earlier type it will have 2 aperture rings and no auto switch. When I use mine I set the click stop ring to minimum aperture and then use the other ring to effect stop down metering. Effectively what happens if you set the switch to manual on later lenses.

Older third party flashes and Pentax P3 compatibility

You can buy a small adapter that goes into the hot shoe to provide a synch socket.

P30 does not have TTL flash so using a dedicated pentax flash doesn't provide much benefit. The camera should work with any flash either in manual or your flash's auto mode. I've used mine with an Olympus T1 and ring flash. The only issue is the trigger voltage. If it is too high then it could possibly damage the camera. Problem is to try and find the specs for the camera. The flash can be measured with a multimeter or check to see if they are listed here Photo Strobe Trigger Voltages

Poll: *istDL vs. *istD

The DS/DL were lower spec entry cameras. That's why they lost features.

*istD is a definite yes. I've had mine for 5 years now and still going strong.

Cosina K-mount SLR fan thread

My first SLR was a Cosina CT-7 which I purchased new in 1983. It has an all metal body and uses buttons instead of dials to set shutter speed in manual (similar to the ME Super)

It served me for nearly 20 years and was the reason I went to Pentax with my current camera (an *istD)

Unfortunately the shutter failed in the end but I have picked up working version since.

M42 Adapter Question

I have lenses that have free play and others that don't. The ones with free play are where the lens actually is not wide enough to sit on the body and is only supported by the adapter. If the lens makes proper contact with the camera body they form a solid mount.

Zuiko lens Club

I use OM lenses on my *istD quite often but only for macro. I have the 80 and 150mm OM bellows macros. I built an adapter out of an OM extension tube and PK mount. This works well as these two macros require extension tubes even on an OM camera. As a result I can use all my OM macro kit on my Pentax.

I have several other Zuiko lenses but since I still use an OM2n I can't really modify the mounts. But the 200mm f/4 Zuiko makes an excellent macro on the Pentax.

As an aside the T1/T10/T8 ring flash systems work exceptionally well on the Pentax as well!

cheers

Adapter for old Olympus lenses?

Hi Tim,

Unfortunately this is not generally possible (OM lens on PK). The registration distance is almost identical which means there is no room to build an adapter and obtain normal focussing. (45.46 vs 46mm)

That said I built a OM/PK adapter out of an OM extension tube and the rear of a PK mount lens. This allows me to use my OM macro gear (bellows and macro lenses) on my Pentax.

cheers
