Recommendations for upgrade from K-30 (K-S2, K-70, KP or wait)

Fugliness? The look of the KP is one of its strongest points. Subjective I suppose, except the KP wins hands down in IQ at all ISOs above basic.

The Metz 36 AF-5 is a cheap (not Made in Germany) full auto P-TTL with bounce and zoom. Folds flat and does everything I need . Try it out.

I pondered and procrastinated this same dilemma for a long time, look at my thread history. I finally bit the bullet and bought a KP + 18-135. I could not be happier. This is the best camera I have owned since I had an ME Super. I can use all the lenses I have accumulated over the last 30+ years when I don't need quiet auto-focus, or at all. The low-light performance is stunning; better than expected. It is solidly built and intelligently designed. It has a plethora of dials, but I have customised them and the buttons leaving almost no need to access the Menu or Info. It's high tech, but feels like an old world camera designed by me. I seriously considered the K-70 and KS2 (and K-50 + 18-35 package which was almost a free camera) but wasn't impressed enough to upgrade. Now that I have to the KP I'm done (except for ordering the Medium grip that it really should come with as standard).

Impressive. Actually better than I thought it would be. I have been holding off on a new DSLR for a while now, but this could be it.

More expensive than an A7S? I hope not. Probably more expensive than an A7, but if it's $3k+ for a body i won't be happy.

Pentax Full Frame DSLR Officially Announced!

If it is compatible with the original K-mount (no contacts) I'll be very happy and sell a child if necessary. Nikon went the extra yard and included the old external AI pin in their full frames and Pentax should do the same. It's not just old lenses, many 3rd party vendors don't supply a KA mount on their manual focus lenses.
I note the prism hump looks huge, suggesting the camera is relatively small. This hopefully indicates the camera will be around the size of a K3, maintaining the Pentax reputation for compact SLRs.

Appears to have screw-drive AF connector as well as AE contacts. No longer listed on Movo website, so probably discontinued. I'd get them now before they're gone.

Very, very impressive. I have recently bought my retro inclined daughter a WG-3 for her upcoming Thailand World Challenge trip and she is somewhat reluctant to indulge in artistic photography with a non-SLR, but your post should change that. Beautiful photography with a solid camera.

Best Back of the Unnamed K camera yet

HDMI may be simply an output for playback and not the ability to connect an HDMI monitor for recording (would be better for that latter purpose on the other side.)
USB3 would be great and should be standard for every camera released since the standard.

Purely my opinion:
Pros- Long awaited new features galore! Articulating screen; WiFi, NFC; compact kit lens - Seriously my last 3 phones have had WiFi, NFC and GPS in a chip the size of my pinky nail.
Existing Pentax features maintained - compact, dual control wheels, weather proofing, SR, solid strap lugs, etc etc. - why piss off your most faithful fans.
Cons - a tad boxy (I love my K-01, but my favourite body is still the sculpted K-30) and I prefer most of the doors and flaps on the LHS, away from the grip.
I'm betting it's a K-50 replacement, as all those features will price it well out of the K-500 price range. Ricoh appear to have settled on a 2-model range for Pentax with both above the cheapest entry-level DSLRs and shy of the top-of-the-range FF DSLRs where they expect some will consider the jump to 645.

No problems here. I have a Rose mic but some time ago started using the amazing Zoom H-1 recorder and cannot imagine ever going back. The mic input for me is now superfluous.

Aperture Value blank after mounting SMC F Lens

This sounds extreme, but has worked for me on some old A series lenses and Tamron Adaptall-2 mounts; carefully scratch around the contacts with a sharp knife or razor. Alternately, do something else to remove invisible build up of crud preventing clean contact of lens to body. Do not use any liquid or paste, maybe very fine metallic sandpaper. If the lens and body are making a clean contact and you still have a problem there is no simple solution and you will have to take both to a technician.

The reasons I bought a K-01 were the top of the line (at the time) sensor in a relatively light weight body at a bargain price. I have not been disappointed, but am still looking to trade in everything for a K-50 or K-3 (if I can afford it).
Good sensitivity permits flash-free shots of my kids and others on stage, although modern multi-colour LCD lighting is a white balance and exposure nightmare.
This shot is at 6400 iso and technically imperfect, but captures the emotion of a little boy singing his heart out.

A Q10 at 200g is roughly the difference in "bulk" between a 560g K-01 and a 750g K-7, so you will definitely notice a difference.
More dramatic is the difference in weight of the lenses. A Q10 is not much different in weight to say, a Sony A5000 but there is a massive difference in the weight of lenses. The kit telephoto zoom for the Sony weighs 345g, whilst the similar lens for the Q weighs only 90g.
A non-reflective screen is the perfect solution to glare/reflection and compatible with plates for loupes etc. (you can have both).

The legendary Helios swirly bokeh. Makes absolutely no sense, but it is lovely when it works. What you got there is still more interesting than precise circles or hexagons, so I'd score it as a success.

Macro What settings should be used

This is fun.
I have prepared 2 lenses.
A Ricoh 50mm f1.4 and a Tamron 28mm f2.8
I have converted one of the cheap rear snap-on lens caps as a hood and await the arrival of a $2.58 52mm Reverse Adapter and $2.20 Softbox.
Both lenses are less useful than other PKA lenses I have, but perfect as reverse macro lenses.

Macro What settings should be used

Ok, so I've ordered a lens reverser and a universal soft box for the flash for about $5 with free postage from Hong Kong.
Having splashed out on accessories, what settings do I use?
Manual focus (obviously), but do I use the focus ring or adjust physical distance only?
Manual aperture (obviously) of f11-16 seems to be advised to maximise dof and avoid diffraction.
The K-01 has a maximum flash sync of 1/180 (although not always an option, so 1/160).
There doesn't appear to be any way of reducing the flash (old Unomat BC24T on a flexible hot-shoe mount) output other than manipulating the limited ISO adjustments on the flash.
I can adjust the ISO on the camera at will.
Is exposure just experiment then hit & miss?
How do you bug guys get such perfect shots?

Looking to add cheap macro to what I have.
K-01 is highest res camera and I have a lot of manual focus SMC-A and M lenses including several 50mm primes, which work fine with the WYSIWYG K-01.
I have 1 P-TTL Nissin flash, but if I take it off-camera I presume I'll lose the P-TTL unless someone makes a generic 5 or 6 connector flash shoe extender.
I have considered one of the cheap Chinese LED manual ring-flashes, but not sure I'd gain anything.
I'm currently thinking manual K-mount bellows (don't have), manual K-mount 50mm prime (have several) and manual flash (have) on a flexible bracket (don't have) or mount (have).
Any thoughts Oh Experts?

---------- Post added 07-01-14 at 05:47 PM ----------

Me again.
Any reason something like this : Off Camera Flash Extension TTL Shoe Sync Cord For All Nikon Cameras + Mini Tripod : On Camera Shoe Mount Flashes : Camera & Photo wouldn't work with any multi-contact TTL flash? I presume the contacts are just a straight pass-through.

NuShield - Best Quality Screen Protectors
Got these instead; 2 to a pack, cut to fit, posted from USA to Oz in less than a week.
I had a flip-bac, which was OK, but difficult to get used to the inverted image especially when manual focussing.
Also have a loupe hood that I can use non-attached when shooting macro etc.
The NuShield DayVue is phenomenal and should be included in the box with every LCD camera, or at least on the counter at every camera shop.
I also found a longer-than-OEM strap like some from Camera Straps | CAM-in very useful when you reach the point in life (like me) when you need to hold the camera a bit further away to focus on the screen.

K30 or K50

I'm looking at either camera with the quiet 18-135. I prefer the look and feel of the K-30 and am very disappointed they went for a "safer" design with the K-50; it looks like a Canon.
They appear to be running out of black K-30s (without discounting them), so I'll probably end up with the now cheaper K-50.

Focusing epiphany (albeit late)

I love my K-01, but alas I have hit the big 5-0 and my eyesight is now officially crap.
I bought a beautiful leather 39" neck strap from Cam-in which enables me to get the camaera far enough away from my deteriorating eyes to focus on the screen (Newson strap bequeathed to my daughter for her K-r).
I have boosted the brightness on the LCD.
I bought a loupe (too bulky) then a flip-bac mirror/shade/protector.
I bought grandpa bi-focals.
Most of my good lenses are old KA 35mm primes and I still struggled to get perfect focus.
Then it hit me by pure accident. I was stuffing about with monochrome when I discovered that both the LCD and focus-peaking are so much clearer in monochrome!
Maybe it's a delusion, but it appears that a lot of the contrast and clarity information is wasted on colour.
Suddenly all my shots were easily focusable with or without focus-peaking, which I quickly assigned to the Red Button for easy toggling.
The real beauty is that I shoot everything in DNG RAW anyway, so all the shots are in unprocessed colour ready for post-processing in Photoshop/Lightroom regardless of the screen setting.
Try this if you too have reached the top of the age parabola and it's all down hill.
The attached photo (converted and reduced to comply with forum restrictions) was taken spontaneously of my overweight (but lovely) cat at night in dim lighting without flash at ISO 6400, 1/25, f2.0 with a SMC-A 50mm 1.7 and I'm very happy under the circumstances.
