Q1 2019 Financial Reports - Pentax still not doomed.

First Theta review I could find was from Sept 2013. I don't speak enough Japaneese to search for pattents, nor do I know how long it takes to develop a Camera system. And I can' t find if Ricoh announced it first.
But sure, 1 year of production until a functional prototype for testing of a new technology on the market.

If I' d know anything about the branch I' d tell you that pigs also fly and America is indeed great again, since 2016.

Pentax doesn' t bellong to their printing deparment. Nor is it customer Service. They are making 3D printers for some OEM' s and display' s for Automotive. It' s clear as day that Pentax, bellong to the 'Other' section. Which according to their slides, got some losses (it' s minus- need another prontscreen) . What' s the big ego trip from your side? Better products were built with a loss until their time came (Smart cars) . Bugatti Veyron (it' s time never came, but come on) . Stop pempering the brand name. It' s a clear reflexion of what they brought to the market (the FY) .

Don' t find it difficult at all. Pentax didn't offer Printing services or anything related to this, thus the division is clear. Numbers speak as I said, I truely believe Pentax was aquired for the Theta technology. It has nothing else to offer in a competitive way (except for the amazing 1% sharpness from a 2 year old sensor at the time of its first release in a competor' s DSLR) ; just look at the number of OEM' s that entered the Mirrorles format, each with different advantages carry over of lenses mostly) . 2 big names plus Panasonic, not to Mention MF (2x) .
Come on...

Click the link in the first post. Search for profitability. I think in 2017 or 2016 there was - xx% (have to double- check) . Anyway, look at the figures. I didn' t say what Pentax has done (restructuring because of negative FY' s) , cause I myself didn' t check all the data and have no access to Ricoh internal management policies, but merely presented how some companies act (not Pentax' s size, true) .

I just tell you what the figures tell. Don' t think for one second that a segment/ division in a group will be sustained financially by a company if they finish the fiscal year on a negative, with a trend also. Theta can be switched to a automotive division and consumer grade cameras stopped (sold or moved to Ricoh) . I' ll tell you what. I' ll check the previous years and get back to you, cause numbers don' t lie.

No offense taken, as I just told you what the presentation tells. But as I said, maybe I don' t know how to 'read' one, and Ricoh bought Pentax only to give away money (kindest multinational company I' ve heard of) .

Proof- open the presentations, identify the (sub)division Pentax bellongs to in the Group, read the facts and the predicted FY' s (past, present and future) , compare them with the obtained ones, and go ask around what happens in such Corporations with such results. If Theta is bringing profit but are affiliated to the non- profit group, I think they are struggling to switch (Project Leaders and Engineers alike might not be content by all that comes with it- I know I would) .

Nope. You mention only the big money bringers. It can be plural. Automotive is more lucrative than consumer grade cameras will be. I wasn' t in the meeting to tell you exactly, but from a business stand point, the presentation kind of tells what I said. Trust me, no company says `and others` , unless they are volatile/ uncertain/ of no real interest (customer, products, whatever you think of) .

Also, from my knowledge, 3 years of negative profit (after expecting positive) will lead to a shareholders audit and a revamp of the business unit (cutdowns, or whatever) .

To whoever blows the horns of Pentax, take into consideration that is one segment of a Corporation (Printing and Customer/ Office services are the big money haulers) .
Maybe I can' t `read` a presentation but for Ricoh the Theta is the Highlight- understandable for its automotive autonomous car segment applicability.
Ricoh bought Pentax for the established QC and Theta (rest can die from what the figures show) .

Demand for Theta and other Digital. So basically the big money comes from the gimmick. Don' t see why they would make a marketing out of this (putting only the Theta- seeing that is a internal document, that should present facts) .
So they were negative profit this year, and expect a decrease overall next year (pic 3) , but in the first picture they predict a profit of 0.4. That shi* makes no sense (IF the prices stay the same; there might be again a price increasing from their side; only reason why `Sales declines but earnings were up` ) . Or the worst case, they are ditching the DSLR market, from which the loss will be, but increase the Industrial products.

Hello,

Let me be the first to tell you (ahead of the `true Pentaxians` ) :
1. Why do you post on a Pentax forum then? Go on Sony!
2. Why do you still the thread? It' s a MK ii thread!
3. Go with Sony! `We` ain' t stopping you! Good!
4. Did you get tha 1% Sensor image quality better- nes? Ungrateful, are you not?
5. You are the FIRST to tell us that a Pentax has failed in this conditions (probably cause you were one of the few who really went in conditions close or similar to what they are marketed to stand up to; not fair- cheeky) .

Have a lovely day!

Hello,

True that, I only know from the pictures others (like you) post, and the little hours I played with a K1 (when it was launched) . All I can say, it ain' t good marketing for the technology (and this is without a single bit of resentment or hatred ) .

True! Stills, dead things. Not all are searching just that in a camera. To take a camera and make it exclusively for one type of shooting (with other small branches coming from it) is bad Engineering.

I was referring to the improvement of the Pentax IBIS, not lack of it. You search for IBIS cause you know what effects have the lacking of it. But I am talking about functions that attract amateur, hobbyist or semi- pro shooters (none of them ever mentioned to me they wanted IBIS; they were satisfied with Lens stabilization) .

Not all of us like to get a software that is not so common. Most use LR and PS. Adapt to what' s more common, don' t be a hipster (this is as far as company goes- not you personally) .

No. I am a guy that owns now two brands of cameras. Stop being a fanboy. Improvement can' t be done only by praising and behind whipping. I don' t discredit anyone for shooting anything (even a pinhole) , if the photos are good. But as far as technology goes, stop praising Pentax for that holy 1 percent of a then 2 year old sensor. Ask for more from this camera brand, cause you (fanboys, or just loyal for whatever reason to the brand) , can' t support it financially. You still use old lenses, thus you don' t buy new ones, you buy maybe one body, and that' s it. They need new clients, they need cash intake and it comes from what they have to offer.

It may be competitive, but I tell you what. I prefer waiting for the A7R Mk 3 to come, to buy a Mk 2 cheaper than a K1 Mk1. I tested them both (k1 and A7Rii) , and although I am a Pentax user, and as I always stated, I like them cause they fine tuned so many features, they just seem obsolete compared to others, in what I was searching for. But it' s OK, cause not all the clients search for that one specific thing (which they don' t seem to understand, since they push a camera for one type of shooting only) . But it' s their management decision. The market will prove them right or wrong.

645, they will lose that slice of market as well. Look what Hassy brought, look at Fuji. People drool for those cameras, and started pre- ordering them like crazy.

The hell with the reviews. People using Nikon liked my K5 by testing it. Not from what they' ve read. When people buy cameras, they buy them by asking at least one guy that has one (or a few) . For starters, I would recommend Pentax. But don' t buy anything new, as you' ll take a hit in the resale.

All the best!

Hello,

IBIS- many have it (crop or FF) ; tilt and shift simulation (mostly for architecture shots; still no specific photographer drops the money for this feature) ; Pixelshift- it' s a joke with a very very narrow field of applicability (perfect static shots- full static- like welded static) , Cleaning the sensor by US when turning on (not the only ones) .

Let' s get the term `innovation` :

Innovation can be defined simply as a "new idea, device or method".[1] However, innovation is often also viewed[by whom?] as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs.[2] Such innovation takes place through the provision of more-effective products, processes, services, technologies, or business models that are made available to markets, governments and society. The term "innovation" can be defined[by whom?] as something original and more effective and, as a consequence, new, that "breaks into" the market or society.[3] Innovation is related to, but not the same as, invention,[4] as innovation is more apt to involve the practical implementation of an invention (i.e. new/improved ability) to make a meaningful impact in the market or society,[5] and not all innovations require an invention. Innovation often[quantify] manifests itself via the engineering process, when the problem being solved is of a technical or scientific nature. The opposite of innovation is exnovation.
While a novel device is often described[by whom?] as an innovation, in economics, management science, and other fields of practice and analysis, innovation is generally considered to be the result of a process that brings together various novel ideas in such a way that they affect society. In industrial economics, innovations are created and found[by whom?] empirically from services to meet growing consumer demand.[6][7][8]

Me, personally I am interested in the first characteristic.
But OK, I' ll lead the thread in the direction you' ve replied it. So they perfect something. You said IBIS. Let me ask you this: Have you felt that you are losing shots because of the IBIS? Did you feel it was primitive in any way? I believe nobody every complained about IBIS, for a matter of fact few people are interested in it, when choosing a camera (contrary to a big point, let' s say AF) . Tilt and shift function, very niche' I suppose it is useful, didn' t hear anyone jumping the gun on Pentax because of that (I am not in the business in talking to people how to spend money on cameras- granted) ; Pixelshift- promising, if nothing is moving (just like Pentax' s sales because of this I suppose) .
Let' s shift to something else Pentax could improve (meaning, really come in this century) : Autofocus, Lens line- up, Software flexibility (and people can come here with their own desires and needs; more or less specific) , mirrorles technology (MF mirrorless is rocking now- they lost the train on this so so bad) , good EVF (for mirrorles- Nikon is announcing a Mirrorles camera- guessing Canon soon) .

Don' t hate/ discredit people for having other camera brands (not directed necessarily towards yourself, as I don' t know your position on this) . I started shooting Sony as well, and it' s customization enough to have it feel like a Pentax (button layout, being used to it) .

However, I do agree that phones are the main competition, killing the entry- level to mid- level gear market.

Threads like this seem in the category of `conspiracy theories` , which is really in the field of fanboys (Pentax doesn' t even exist in the eyes of the competition/ big brands) . It' s like most here forget it' s a place of photography and the brand (not rooster measuring) .

Have a nice day!

Get your tinfoil hats ready. A (couple) of big companies will want to kill the market Pentax has (marginal to non- existent/ competitive) . Are you people adults? I honestly doubt that and can' t imagine you are taken seriously. You advocate that 1% like is the holynes of photography and yet blabberd when others came with other moderate improvements compared to Pentax. Pentax has 0 innovation (look the word up before citting the x year old sensor improvements, yada yada) , but is a a camera (whatever model you have) . So, what' s this teenagerish acting?

Hello,

Thank you all for the replies!

@clackers:
Please go into details what' s so `very` ? I was interested in just getting three primes, and am obsessed with getting the most for my money. I understand the versatility of zooms, but found myself going to fixed focal lengths. Main reason being that they were smaller (good for street, backpacking) .

@mee :
yeah, friendly as teenagers that sense something else in their `group of superiority` ; beneath them, of course (not Pentax) .

As a side story, I would also need some advice for the Sony Alfa 7Rii. Is there something UWA that doesn' t distort (Rokinon maybe) ? If so, what model (Google doesn' t give me any precise answers, only question threads) . Maybe a combination with an adapter (would be nice to have F- stop confirmation and focal length) .

Best regards!

Hello,

Lenses, ISO/ Shutter speed wheels etc. are all muscle memory/ habbits that can be retought.
* Menu system, rain resistance?

Sony Alpha 7r ii comes strong, but I see the button layout and Menu' s are a bi*ch. Still studying the overall cost.

Thanks for your time!

Hello,

So overall, it' s a better system (considering that AF is a prime requirement) . I have a k1 offering (dirt cheap) , but am not convinced. Hate the learning curve on the Nikon, but am 80 percent convinced it' s the way to go.
Can you give me some tips coming from Pentax to Nikon?

Thanks!

Hello,

What Nikon System are you using?

Do you use the K1 for photo shoots? Does it do anything to moving subjects (quality, AF) ? I see lots of pictures of people, but they are still, and seem dull and lifeless to be honest.
I compared the d810 and the k1 for AF, and the d810 wins by miles. What' s your workaround for this?

Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you for your suggestions. I have the 85 from Samyang K mount. I am keeping it for my film camera.
The Tamron is still on for sale, at half (or less) the 24- 70 1st series (both used) .

Regarding the k1 hints, it' s a Nikon sub- forum. I made my peace, I searched for something that the k1 can' t offer me (and found) , regardless of the other tend to push and shovel.

Thanks again!

I see you are trying. But let' s leave it to whatever makes you content.

Extra info from a few days of browsing the market and reviews.
Looking at:
Tamron 24- 70 ; the G2 is just as expensive as a mint Nikkor 24- 70. What' s better (IQ, AF, Shake reduction and build quality; brand doesn' t do anything to me) ?

Or should I move towards fixed primes:
28, 50, 85?

Thanks for your time and input (everyone) !

Yeah anyway, basically yes; I don' t have the illusion that more lenses are better. Bought me something with AF and proper flashsync. If I would have been interested in Astro would have bought the D810- A, but here we are.

Yeah, 24- 70 from Tamron keeps popping up, but the G2 (which is not yet to be sold SH) .

Thanks!
