I'm retired for the 3rd time. It finally stuck. Haven't worked since 31 March 2013. Been "fully employed" with my 3 grandkids. Best "job" ever!

Ah...what memories you're bringing back. I only had the "pleasure" of a launch (no landings) the day I left the carrier in a C2A COD (carrier onboard delivery) heading for Clark AFB, then on Travis AFB, then on to Treasure Island for discharge.

Yep, there was always something exciting happening on the flight deck. I was on USS Oriskany, CVA-34, and I watched a bundle of flight ops. Forgot about flight deck being wood. Think it was teak wood if I remember correctly.

I had no idea you were so young! Must be the grandfatherly thing. Nothing better than holding a bundle of joy. My wife and I just had a 4-day "sleep over" (at their house) with our 2 grandchildren (5 yr old Sydney & 3 yr old Cooper) while parents were out of town celebrating their anniversary.

She's gorgeous!! Can I hold her? Babies are so cuddly and smell so good (most of the time). It's great having a new granddaughter. I have a 5 year old "princess" (won't be another in our family). Hard to believe Claire is 13.

Yep, we had a maytag washer and 2 rinse tubs on the back porch. My brother and I had to fill everything with the garden hose, and yes, my brother caught his fingers in the wringer once, and only once. Guess he was a fast learner.

I agree with renting a lens or two before you go just to see what you want. Last September I rented a couple of lenses from Camera Lens Rental (from IN if I remember correctly) for a 2-week trip through Utah. They had good prices and super service. I contacted them mid-trip to ask for an extension and it was not problem at all. Not driving a "Fit" to AK? Just kidding, remember from Steves Digital forum that you drove one. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for sharing Dewman, seeing these photos really brings some fond memories. My ship (USS Oriskany, CVA-34) had a fair number of A-1's. I spent a lot of my free time on some of the upper levels watching take-offs and landings.

Move Up from a K-5?

I'm 99% sure that I'm getting a K-3ii by the end of this year, and was thinking that new ones will probably be gone. If they are, I'll pick up a used one. You're right that there should be more in the market place by that time.

I'm thinking very seriously about a K-3ii (currently shooting 8 year old K-20D), and I am disappointed that K-3ii was officially discontinued. Guess I better make a decision before they are all gone.

Sorry so late in replying. Been laid up with a nasty cold (but thankfully no flu). I came aboard the Oriskany as soon as she returned for repairs. Repairs were made at Hunters Point Ship Yard and repairs took about 5-6 months (I think) and most of the crew was assigned to other local activities. I was assigned to Armed Forces Police (mixture of AF, Navy & Marines) at Alameda Naval Air Station and we covered Oakland area and San Francisco area. Those of us assigned to patrol Oakland were required to spend our free time in SF and vice versa. Rationale was for us not to fraternize clubs and bars that we patrolled. Worked fine for me as I got to spend a lot of time in SF. As soon as repairs were completed we headed back to Yankee Station in Tonkin Gulf. We were on station when Forrestal caught fire. For the most part, I enjoyed my Naval service. Got out 2 months early so I could go back to college.

Well done, Dewman. I was on the USS Oriskany CVA-34 about the time you were on the Ticondera. I served from 1964-1968 as a radioman, and served 22 months on Oriskany and spent a lot of time watching air ops. Saw 1 arrested landing (A-4 if memory serves me).

MacBook Pro 13 mid 2017

I went from a 17" Dell laptop (it died 1 month out of warranty and Dell wouldn't help, so bye bye Dell) to a 16 GB ram, 13" MacBook Pro (should have gotten the 15"), and I'm happy with it, but it did take a fair bit of time to adjust to the smaller screen. I'm giving myself the 27" iMac for Christmas.

Are you buying a Christmas gift for yourself?

Many years ago my wife and I stopped giving each other presents for Christmas, birthdays, or anniversaries (we "recognized" our 50th anniversary 18 Dec). Over the years we realized that we were buying whatever we wanted when we wanted it - mostly, so nothing left for special days. I think my wife owns at least 1/2 of QVC (lot of boxes coming to our house), and I never say a word about anything she gets. This year, I'm giving myself a 27" iMac (with her permission of course). Current Dell desktop is 9 years old and so unreliable that I hate using it. If I turn it off, I'm looking at a 12-15 min boot up, if I'm lucky. 95% of the time I'm on my 13" MacBook Pro (should have gotten 15"), or iPad.
