Pentax ME Super Lens Stuck

Maybe try rotating the lens back and forth while depressing the release lever. Sometimes the slightest wiggle will help free something that is frozen. You could also try heating the area of the release lever and the base of the lens with a hair dryer. Heat cycling can sometimes help too. Long shots, but not much to loose.

I have the aspherical version. If nothing else, it's a neat piece of history. Here are a pair of pages with some interesting information. The spherical may very well be "better" for astro photography.

Black & White Photography Your Thoughts

It's a mindset for me I have before I ever take the picture. It's not something I think of doing after the fact with a color photo. I prefer shooting it in film, as I feel it's part of how I see when I do shoot black and white. I think I associate the grain of film as part of the quality that I like about black and white. Probably because that's how I started out in photography.

Bulging D-L109 Battery - Replace with real Pentax or is Brand X OK?

Most definitely. They will go from charged to flat very quickly, and if you don't have a spare on hand, you're in a pickle. I've discovered this on the dog walk....

Need for help and opinions for an analog camera

Why these three specifically? I don't know the Minolta, but the SP1000 and OM2 seem very different. The SP1000 is an older manual camera with screw mount lenses, and the OM2 is an aperture priority automatic with manual override. I'd pick the ME Super as more of an equivalent to the OM2, and I'd go for the Pentax over the Olympus. If you poke around a bit, you can get an ME Super for pretty good prices. I'd go for that. You'll get a camera that is aperture priority with a full manual mode. They are nice and compact and friendly to learn with. I bought mine new, and it's still kicking. One of the neat things about a Pentax K mount body is being able to use a really large array of lenses. You'll be able to use all the old screw mount M42 lenses (with an adapter) plus many of the K mount lenses.

As others, I have found that with age, the 3rd party batteries don't hold up as well. The Pentax ones seem to hang in there.

Having a camera store with Pentax on display at all is so nice to see. Sounds like they still have a good presence, especially with the contraction in the overall market.

Good thread, and appreciate the work involved to do this. It always sounds so simple to just compare a couple cameras, lenses etc., but actually doing it and reaching meaningful conclusions can be tricky. Lots of variables involved. Good job, and look forward to your continued impressions.

PetaPixel: Pentax May Have Lucked Out as Nikon and Canon Leave DSLRs Behind

I look at where Pentax is somewhat like where Leica is. It's not about volume. It's about doing what you do, because you're the one that does it unlike any other. Pentax really brought the SLR into the world and made it the standard. We forget there was a day when it seemed like everyone knew about and wanted a Pentax. The Spotmatic was something I coveted as I started to get into photography, and as I talked with other people into photography, it (or other Pentax models) seemed to be everywhere. So, I optimistically hope Pentax will continue to be Pentax, and there will be those who seek it out, because its unlike any other, and they continue to do what they do.

Different colors in JPG and RAW (Custom Image option)

Some RAW editors, like LightRoom, have some included preset profiles that attempt to mimic the camera's different jpg selections. You can also find/buy premade profiles for RAW editors. The RAW file is the starting point the in-camera jpeg is created from, but it doesn't have any of the jpeg processing information. What RAW software are you using? If you're using DCU, which comes with the camera, I'm pretty sure it has presets that match the camera's jpeg modes.

I would recommend you try shooting in RAW+ mode, so you get the RAW files and jpegs with whatever setting you choose. You can then start working with post processing and the RAW file and get a feel for what you can do. You may find you're fine with the camera developed jpeg most of the time, but there will be situations where you will want the control RAW gives you. Recovering dark areas or blown out highlights are common examples where having the RAW file can be very valuable.

This is a hard choice. These are all very nice lenses with different things to bring to the table. The 16-85 is great for range and versatility. I gave my copy to my daughter, and I often want it back. ; ) My daily walk the dog kit has become a 15 LTD, 20-40 LTD, and 55-300 PLM. The walk includes a park bench overlooking a river with lots of nice bird action, so I find myself predominantly going between the 20-40 and 55-300, depending on where I am in the walk progress. The 15 gives me the wide when I want it. The build and feel and look of the 20-40 is the winner, and the pixie dust is strong. It's hard not to love this lens. I think what you will need to sort out is if you need more reach, and how do you get that. That's why I mention my kit with the PLM. That trio really covers quite a range, with each lens having a sweet spot of application.

I'd say don't get hung up on semantics. Many things come into play as to what one finds pleasing. Certainly some lenses tend to render out of focus areas more "busy" than others, and depending on what the subject and intent is, that may or may not matter. Rondec's post is a nice example of a pleasing photo where the background adds instead of detracts from the image, but it's far more than just having some bubbles in the background.

As I've said to others, if you do IT long enough, one day, you will have that terrible feeling in your gut where you know there's no recovery, the system is down, etc. Sucks. Really feel for you. You have also reinforced my current backup approach, which is buying more external drives, and having copies of the copies stored in different locations and never deleting, but just appending. Luckily, storage in today's world has gotten pretty cheap. And yes, as stated above, test restores are necessary. It's a bore, but it's needed.

Well, get back out there and more airshows and everything else. I think it's time for a photo taking binge.

Why not bring the 1.2 and have the option? You never know what might strike your creative fancy. Figure the 1.2 can do everything the 1.7 can and more.

I never use autofocus for shooting a chart like that. I would use live view and press the "OK" button to zoom the image to the maximum enlargement for best focusing results. And as mentioned, that chart should be used filling the full frame. The link @astrodave posted is where I downloaded my copy from too.

Pentax HD PENTAX-D FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR question

I'd really go for something wider for touring in towns and cities with an APS-C body. When I used to do a lot of traveling with my ME Super, my 28mm became my go to lens, and I often wish I could back up a few more feet than I could. I'd really look for something that was in the 16-18mm range on the wide end. The Sigma 17-70 is a nice lens, as is the DA 16-85. They would both be on my short list as an all around travel lens on that body. The 16-85 gets the nudge for WR, the zoom turning the correct direction and a little wider range, but the Sigma is nice too (I have both).

I think I'd have to stay with Pentax. It's everything from the OVF to all the lovely Takumar lenses etc. that I can use with the modern bodies. The community also seems unique to me. I think if I switched systems, I'd feel there was a hole in it all.
