Kit for KP: quality / price

I think the best Xmas present you could give your KP are some of the Limited lenses. A match made in heaven.

Personally I favor the 15, 20-40 and 70 as a 3 lens kit. Mainly because I don't like changing lenses much around the normal focal ranges.

But since you are used to being a prime shooter I think the KP + 21, 40 and 70 pancakes is an awesome compact kit. I don't think any other manufacturer can match that combination, not even Fuji.
Need macro? substitute the 40 for the DA 35 2.8 Limited.
Need more speed? substitute the 40 for the FA 43 or FA 31 or FA 35.

K7 - Asking for some advice - might sell it

I would say $125-$175 USD.

The K-7 has the Samsung sensor which didn't have great ISO performance, however it had quite nice color and an almost film like rendering in my opinion.
I'd consider keeping it.

No direct experience, but a few people have said that the the DFA 100 Macro can exhibit CA wide open.

If not too long there a lot of 135mm vintage options.

Good deal. I think they'll shift a few of these at that price.

$229 always seemed like an odd price given the price of the body itself.

Here's what I measured with my digital calipers (calibrated).

These are mount to LCD bezel dimensions, mount to LCD screen dimensions may be slightly less if screen is inset rather than flush.

K-30: 63.5
K-r: 63.6
K-5iis: 64.1
KP: 64.3
K-S2: 66.5

K-? : 61.8 (Per Pentax)
K-1: 71.5 (Per Pentax)

I agree. Plenty of detail to work with. CA not bad at all.
As good as the 50 1.2 is, it is a vintage lens that's not designed for corner to corner sharpness on high pixel density modern cameras.

I'd say it is a good performance by the speedbooster.

Now let's get some modern glass on there and see what we an do.
How about the the DA*300. It becomes a 150mm f/2 with a 700mm equiv FOV.
Or the DA 35mm Ltd. It becomes an 18mm f/1.4 with a 80mm equiv FOV.
Or the compact 21/40/70 pancakes...

K-5 IIs or K-70?

No one mentioned that the K-70 has the Anti-aliasing simulator. So you can switch it on when shooting fabrics and switch it off when you're not. It also has pixel shift which is great for product stills.

To be honest though unless you are doing commercial quality product photography for large printing, both would get the job done.
If you have the budget, consider the KP as well.

Yep, I think part of this is due to the longevity of the K-mount and having multiple series of lenses over the decades. Add on to that the use of the mount for both APS-C and FF. For an outsider to the brand I can see how it looks a little incoherent.

Pentax is quirky and sometimes eccentric. I like quirky and eccentric. I like things that are not mainstream.
There is always going to be a group of people who seek out and embrace these things.

oh dear, I think I know what comes next

No doubt. The OP did say they are in the mood for change. If you have the funds why not buy what you want or what takes your fancy?

Used 21s, 40s and 70s are very affordable and well suited for street shooting. Just a suggestion.

PDAF Struggles with Black?

One other point here that gets missed is that the cross-type focus sensor can be bigger than the red focus point square in the view finder.

You can test this yourself at home with a piece of paper and some marker lines drawn on it.

When one goes to focus on something like a birds eye at a distance and the red focus square completely covers the birds head, it may actually focus on something higher contrast behind the birds head like a a branch.
With this realization it becomes much easier to pick places to focus on in a scene.

I've noticed this more on the KP than my K-5iis.

I tend to agree with this.

However if you are in the mood to buy, then the DA Limited lenses (15, 21, 35, 40, 70, 20-40) are a real joy to shoot on APS-C cameras.
The 3 DA Limited pancake lenses 21, 40, 70, would we nice for street being so compact.

+1

For price, size, mobility, reach, pure IQ, usability I have yet to see anything better on the K mount than DA*300 ( +/- HD 1.4x TC)

If there is something better that I missed that checks all those boxes then let me know :)

55-300 PLM + the 18-55 is good to start with.

Use them a lot. You will then start to understand what you need and what is holding back your photography.

For many years I only owned the 18-55 and I got some of my best photos with that lens because I would tend to experiment more.

Teleconverter for Pentax SMCP-DA* 300mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM

The price of the Pentax HD 1.4x AW does seem hard to swallow for what it is. I went through the same feelings.

However having used it with the DA*200, DA*300 and DA*60-250 I can say it is worth it.

Think of it this way, with the DA*300 on crop you get 630mm full frame equivalent reach at f/5.6. All weather-sealed with seamless AF and no real loss in image quality.
They pop up on the forum for sale occasionally for around $300 or less.

The 60-250 is no compromises optic.

- Sharp edge to edge at any aperture and any focal length.
- Lovely bokeh
- Contrast & color
- Rendering, pop, OOF fall off.
It's AW and built like a tank. As long as you don't mind the size, weight, and SDM then it's hard to do better.

No experience with the Tamron, but I think you only get it over the 60-250 if you need 2.8 or zippier AF.

Also consider the 50-135 2.8, 55-300's, the old F 70-200 or old F 70-210.
