That would be great if you could add attachments in groups. I imagine posters must stumble on this regularly, like me :-s

Thanks again!

Thanks @Adam, Now I remember this problem. It doesn't work with groups, right? I was trying to reply to a post in the Astrophotography group.

I checked the help and there is supposed to be a manage attachments button to click on when I reply to a post but there is nothing. I use Safari. Is there a problem with Safari? I tried Firefox and I still don't see any way to attach a photo in a reply - neither quick nor advanced. I just noticed in this post that the button is there, so I can see as an OP, I can attach a photo but what about as a responder? Why don't I see the button?

This is an awesome camera that I bought for myself. Fixed zoom lens by Leica, great video and very good stills - 4/3 sensor with 12.8 Mpx. You can get a little shutter attachment that will cover the lens when its retracted and you can put it in your pocket.

You may be able to find an installer . I found it on Techspot but I can't vouch for the site. It may be risky. Maybe someone has an installer saved that they can provide you. I dont have it now but I am using it. I think I installed it in 2017 which looks like the last available date.

You can probably get lenses at swaps, but film development and printing or scanning will not be cheap so the cost doesn't end with the kit.

I think if you do nature photography you might be better off with the aps-c because I don't think the K-1 has a very high frame rate - best for landscape. Nature and sports can really benefit from hi FPS and I would think any new camera will do better in low light than what you already have.

Jumping back into Pentax - KP, K1, or switch to another brand?

Since you declared an interest in either the K-5 or the K-3, I would suggest the K-3II. I have both the K-5II and the K-3II and although I really love the K-5II, it had a problem with flash control, which I think is a documented bug that you should be able to google - think it was a controller bug that could not be fixed in firmware. I converted my K-5II to astrophotography because it has such an excellent sensor. So I bought a K-3II - also a very good sensor - and although it uses quite a bit of battery power, it worked very well including light metering and flash control, which you will want with portrait photography. Good luck!

You seem to be semi-professional so a good FF camera would be a real asset. I wouldn't worry about what lenses you already have especially since the ones you have aren't very fast - maybe not that performant? If you get a K-1 or a Canikon, you'll probably have to buy new lenses anyway. The K-1 is a beautiful highly rated camera so no doubt it will not disappoint. There's nothing quite like looking through a DSLR. Mirrorless is OK but not as inspiring to use, in my view. Its true that Pentax is not very well supported but I think the K-1 is drawing attention from 3rd party vendors. Also, Pentax has released a software development kit that may inspire 3rd party support for things like tethering and remote control.

Tripod for astroguide

I wouldn't worry about the tripod unless you know its affecting your photos. I've seen people take photos with very light tripods and even gorilla pods. With astrophotography, you should use delayed trigger or intervalometer and not touch your camera anyway. I think astrotracer can also use delayed trigger.

I posted images, which others couldn't see. I discovered my album was private so I made it public and they still couldn't see the images. So I resubmitted the images to the public album and reattached them to the post and still not working. What is wrong?

That's awesome, I wonder if that's the one that was stolen from me back in 1985?! ;-) My father had the very same, which I acquired - see my avatar :-) I think it's from the early 70s (edit: I've read 1971). Very good camera and lens. I think this model was considered a professional camera at the time. Hang on to it!

All Pentaxes are weather sealed . That's one of their selling points. There may be the odd camera that is not so check that.

Basically, Advanced have professional features and quality with an APS-C (crop) sensor. The professional are full frame and medium format sensors... and expensive! The others speak for themselves.

Tethering support and or API release for K-50 and others

Hi @blues_hawk, sounds like you are suffering like the rest of us astrophotographers. A friend who also has a K-5 has been sharing the pain.

I was lucky enough to have bought a K-5 II years ago and it just happens to be an excellent AP camera - I would even venture to say the best. So good in fact that I spent another $300 US or so for a full spectrum modification. You might think about buying one second hand - I modded my K-5 and bought a second hand K-3 for regular photography!

After a couple of years of dealing with lack of software support on the Pentax, I would say that at this point, there is only one real need for tethering and thats to work with plate solving, which I use for alignment and to zero in on my targets. If you don't do plate solving, that is you do alignment and target framing manually. Then the intervalometer is all you really need. You can preview your shots on camera and these computer-less setups are much less frustrating to deal with - I had often thought I should have stuck to the manual methods.

For focusing I still use live view - I can put my K-5 into live view mode without causing hang-ups with GPhoto2 - just have to remember to put it back to bulb mode before trying to take a pic or it WILL hang.

Cheers
Greg

Software support for Pentax needed!

Yes, I may try my hand again at some software development given the SDK may give some insights. I would hope that Ricoh kept the API similar from the K3 to the K1 and and KP. K3 may actually be supported to a lesser extent although unofficially.

Sadly they aren’t supporting the k3 and k5, two highly coveted cameras for astrophotography. But I have to say RICOH/Pentax are really impressing now. Maybe another bug plant tho!

Try it on a friends camera. I had one and could not get it to work on my camera. I now have a K-3II with it built in and I still can't get it to work - gave up - I use a Star Adventurer instead - works great.

I haven't seen any thermal noise data but for sensor data I go to DXO for colour info and Sensorgen - digital camera sensor data for noise and DR info.
