Building a nest is a muddy job

I had fun one summer afternoon in the backyard garden photographing this robin at the bird bath. It would use the mud for building its nest and return for a bath and then more mud.

k10d can not work with pre-digital electronic flash gear?

I use the Wein Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe with PC (available at B&H) for my old Vivitar 285 flashes. Not only does this allow you to put the flash on top of the camera, but you also have the option to use a cord from the adapter to mount the flash on a frame.

Noise inside 55mm f4 67 lens

I purchased a brand new SMC Pentax 67 55mm f4 back in June 2000 and noticed the same thing -- a noise when I rotated the lens around. I still have the lens, and it still has the noise. I'd forgotten about it, as the lens has never had any problems with its operation or the quality of images (excellent). I hope yours serves as well, even if it isn't silent.

Likes and Dislikes of the K-1

I'm very much enjoying almost everything about the camera; it has exceeded my expectations. One little surprise that I like is the Lock button; sometimes I would unknowingly dial the aperture or shutter speed up or down while using manual flash, but this feature protects against that. Minor inconveniences include the playback button's position (like others, I'm inclined to go for LV, and really have to think where the button is when I have one of the older cameras in hand) and the omission of Dust Alert.

Dust Alert

After doing outdoor lens tests with my new K-1, which involved a number of lens changes in windy conditions, I thought I'd do a check for dust; however, when I looked for the Dust Alert function in the menus, I couldn't find it. It's not where it is on my K-5 and K-3. I checked the manual and then searched the forum and couldn't find any specific references regarding the K-1. Google brought back the following page which specifically mentions it: Pentax K-1 Review: Initial Test - Technical Info. Has anyone used Dust Alert on the K-1? Am I missing the obvious? Thank you.

Stopped by the local camera shop a few days ago, not expecting any K-1 bodies to be in inventory, but was pleasantly surprised to find a shipment had arrived that morning. To tell the truth, I hadn't really decided whether I'd buy one in the near future, but with the camera in hand, the outcome was a foregone conclusion.

Here's a photo of my morning grind, taken with a K55/1.8 lens at ISO 100, f11, 2.5 sec and Pixel Shift. Below is a 100% crop of the detail.

Any way to get K-5 serial number besides on the body? (stolen)

Not that I have seen in my files, though I have to say that many of my lenses are older (pre-digital) lenses. I checked to see if the FA 31mm f1.8's serial number shows up in the files, and it doesn't.

The camera's PEF and JPG files contain the serial number. I'm not a Windows user, but on Linux I use the exiftool utility to extract/display the EXIF data. One of the pieces of information displayed is the camera's serial number. (If Windows doesn't show the serial number in the Properties tab for an image, you can look to download the exiftool for Windows at ExifTool by Phil Harvey).

Poll: 24mp vs 36mp

I would be happy with either, but would lean to the 24mp format. I agree with the points pinholecam provided, and would add that every time I have had a noticeable increase to the number of megapixels in a new camera, I have also had to shell out for a computer upgrade to keep up with the RAW processing.

Good question. When I'm not using my Pentax AF540, I sometimes use an old Vivitar 285 with a surge protector. I confess that I've forgotten the protector on the odd occasion (fortunately with my old DS2 and not my K10D or K5), but it hasn't cooked the camera yet. That said, it would be well worth investing in a surge protector.

Excellent shots, Rupert.

Chickadees are my favourites, but they seldom remain in one spot long enough for me to get decent images. I got these two quite a while back at our local bird sanctuary. The nuthatch was looking for food and came to my son's hand, but left disappointed!

Greetings!

Although a new member on PentaxForums, I have been enjoying reading the articles and reviewing forum questions and replies for quite some time. The site is certainly a wealth of information, not only regarding Pentax equipment, but photography in general.

I have been an avid amateur photographer and Pentax user since 1987, and have accumulated numerous 35mm bodies + lenses and 6x7 equipment over the years, most of which I still own. Now my digital collection of bodies and lenses is growing, though I still find great satisfaction in using those old lenses on the new bodies.

I'm looking forward to being part of the community!

Darcy
