I cannot understand why the K3ii ceased production when its replacement was not ready. I am a K3ii user in the UK and mine failed and needed to be replaced by Pentax. It took them ages to get me a refurbished one. They are out of stock now in the UK.

Pentax fix for K-5 sticky exposure override button

After not using my K-5 for some time I discovered the same issue some others have had - the exposure override button sticks down. Ages ago, I once tried dabbing some warm water on the top and it seemed to help, but it did not cure it. Today I discovered how easy it is to fix properly.

I bought a set of precision screwdrivers and got the top of really easily - once I discovered where the screw is on the front right of the camera - you need to carefully peel the fake leather away under where the K-5 logo is. The screw head is revealed. You do not need to remove the fake leather though - just peel it back.

The other 'hidden' screw is accessed inside the battery compartment. Two are in the flash area once the flash is popped open. Two others are visible once the eyepiece is removed. The others can be seen easily anyway. They are not all the same screw so note which is which.

I then wiggled the top off and used a cotton bud soaked in WD40 to dab the underneath of the button. After a few dabs and pushes of the button I pushed the top back on and screwed it all up. It's a really easy job and takes about ten minutes.

Hope this helps

Exact same issue on mine. Just gently poured hottish water over, waited a few minutes and it fixed it after pressing it a few times it seems as good as new.

I was in Marrakesh last year and in a very busy street just of the main square spotted a young couple with a K200D. I asked them if they would take a pic of the two of us on my K20D and I reciprocated. Then a few months later I was back in Marrakesh and out of the hundreds of cafes I chose one and then after sitting down I realised that the man next to me had a K20D too! I took a pic on his camera of them (bizarrely he had it set to 3200ISO!!!). You do get a buzz when you see a fellow Pentaxian.

A couple of months ago I was in Seville in Spain with my brother (he has a K200D) and we got chatting to a K100D user. He tried out some of our lenses.

Out of interest, does it focus OK at longer focal lengths or is it just at the wide end that it cannot focus at distances?

Pentax DA 16-45 Focus issue and poor overall quality

Just to confirm. It did have a hood on. My manual focus technique is to focus until I see roof tiles in the distance start to shimmer with a sort of moire effect. It works fine this way with my manual lenses. I am surprised a new filter would affect image quality - I find this disturbing.

Pentax DA 16-45 Focus issue and poor overall quality

Hi Marc

When I am talking about 20mm I mean the focal length. Under 20mm the lens just won't focus at infinity.

The shot is at F8 at 250th/sec. There is no camera shake as otherwise the centre would be blurred too. 250th at this focal length on a tripod is easliy fast enough. Mirror slap would affect the centre as much as the edge too.

I had a brand new Multi Coated UV filter on and the light was behind the camera front element. The link to the full size image can be ignored as it seems that on my account you cannot zoom in anyway. This was taken today and it was very clear.

Thanks for your input.

I cleaned the contacts in case they were causing an issue. My brother has a DA16-45 and I used this only a week ago with no problem. I use/have used on this body a DA55-300, DA50-200, two different 18-55 IIs and a Sigma 10-20 all with no focussing issues. It's only happened on the DA*16-50 and this DA16-45mm.

I have bought a DA 16-45 lens and would appreciate your comments.

My K20D kit lens was the 18-55 II. It was faulty and was replaced but I have never been happy with the edge performance, so I bought a second hand DA*16-50mm. This got damaged in the post and has caused me 3 months of hassle. I had an issue with this lens too that it would not focus at infinity at wide angle and the focus light would therefore just flash. Prior to today I had thought this was SDM related and could not happen on a screw-drive lens.

Seeing a DA16-45 second hand and knowing that it is highly regarded, I bought it and today tried it out. I am very disappointed. It won't focus at infinity at anything under 20mm on my K20D. It just makes a slight whirr as it tries to focus. Moving the quick shift ring makes no difference and I can only take a photo on Manual! Anyone else had this on screw-drive?

The image quality too seems very poor. I have posted three unsharpened highest quality JPEGs here taken with a tripod and no SR and I would appreciate feedback.

Centre - seems OK to me. Focus was on the distant buildings. Manual focus as Auto Focus was impossible.

Left very poor CA around white pillars. Metal lamp post has purple fringe.

Right looks very poor to me. It is the same distance as the main focus point.

The image in total appears here...

Lens repair DA* 16-50mm in Spain

I got my lens second hand and it got damaged in the post. The lens is decentered so the top right area and right are blurred. There is also something loose (screw maybe) inside so if I tilt the lens up and down I can hear something roll back and forth. This then jams the zoom ring so it cannot get past 28mm and sometimes it cannot get from 18mm down to 16mm. If I tilt the lens a certain way then the loose item rolls away and I can zoom correctly.

Has anyone any experience of having a lens repaired (or any Pentax gear) repaired in Spain? They don't have a Pentax Spain office and use agents such as Reflecta S.A.

My suspicion is it needs to go to Japan anyway, but if anyone has experience of the authorised Spain agents I would be grateful.

Digital photo frame - recommendation required
Posted By tigershoot

I have had major hassle lately in my quest for a decent digital photo frame. I want one that is 4:3 ratio, and is at least 8". I have had a NIX which was faulty so I got a refund. I have had a Telefunken DPF9321 which incredibly does not let you choose which photo you want to display (it just defaults to a slideshow starting at the same image each time). I have looked at the Agfa 5087 but it too cannot handle folders.
I want a frame that has decent file handling, i.e. I want to organise multiple folders (like albums) and then I want the ability to be able to call up a list of all the folders, then select a folder and either have a slideshow of that folder, or be able to start displaying the contents of that folder. Sounds basic, but you'll be amazed at how this seems too complex for many manufacturers. They concentrate on everything but how you are going to use it!
How hard can it be for photo frame makers to realise that a photo frame with possibly tens of thousands of photos on it needs to be user friendly? If I have friends around and I want to show them photos from say a holiday 5 years ago, I don't want to be scrolling through thousands of images
Any recommendations anyone?

Why bother? They would be better off either selling the stuff at realistic prices or save the money and spend it on some proper QC for their lenses. Who is going to but the DA 12-24 for 1299?

DA* 16-50 Focus Issue

Not good really is it? I had to take a quick shot above my head as the fence in front of me was high (not snooping I promise) and then found that I couldn't take the pic. I had to aim down the street to get focus and then try again. Hopeless.

DA* 16-50 Focus Issue

Hi

I have just bought a second hand DA* 16-50mm. It is my first SDM lens. It acquires focus most of the time, but (in broad daylight) the focus confirmation light in the viewfinder flashes meaning the shutter won't fire. No matter how long I keep the shutter button half-depressed (and the camera still) the viewfinder focus light just keeps flashing. I have to point the camera at something else of a similar distance and then focus on that.

If I put the focus switch on the body to manual, then manually focus I can get that focus light to flash on some occasions too. This is when I am keeping the body as still as possible, so it's not liking I'm moving the camera and it is checking the focus again.

Has anyone else had this issue?

300 dpi question

Just to add from a print perspective that 300DPI is regarded as the book/magazine publishing norm. However, as I learned in the Photoshop WOW book, for many photos you can easily get away with 225 and you won't see any degradation in the printed image. The authors reckoned that you must use 300DPI if your image has any hard edges (as else you may see some pixellation).

The 300DPI thing is way overused. It comes from the rule of thumb that the DPI should be twice the LPI (lines per inch of the halftone screen) used for any given paper. So, on quality coated paper, the norm is 150 LPI. On something like newsprint though the LPI may be way lower - perhaps just 85LPI so 170DPI would suffice. However, 300 is such a magic figure that if you submitted a 170DPI image you would probably get them complaining that image is too low res! I had Yellow Pages once insisting that the images must be 300DPI - they didn't know what they were talking about but 300DPI is the figure you will always here as the minimum for high res images.

BBC story about wedding photography

I once saw the wedding pics of a work colleague and they were shocking. One of the main pics had the couple sitting on the ground, but because the grass was wet he had them on white plastic bags which were clearly visible in the photos. Many were so skew you wondered whether he was drunk. Some had the guests all in a line but the outermost guests were only half in the pics!
