How to use Av mode with manual lenses

Well .. first off, I didn't destroy the lens. It's perfect still, and the dremel does a perfect job.

Second, I didn't see it anywhere on the forums, so I thought I'd post it.

How to use Av mode with manual lenses

Hi everyone,

I don't know if anyone has figured this out yet, but I thought I may as well post it. I was just inspecting my old Tokina 135mm f/2.8 lens, and was trying to figure out a way to use the old manual lenses in aperture-priority mode. Well, I figured it out.

This is only useful when you have a manual lens with an aperture ring, and no contacts on the lens that allow you to change the aperture in-camera.

It's very simple. All you have to do is remove the little black sliding part on the back of the lens.

Once you've removed that, go into Av mode, and start turning the aperture ring and you'll see the exposure start to change. :D

I used a little high speed dremel, but I'm sure you can find other tools to take it off. I'd recommend using some masking tape over the rear mount, just so your glass keeps clean.

Yesterday at my church picnic, this nice old man named Lorne was talking to me about SLR's, and he was saying that he picked up a Pentax ME and 50mm lens from the Care & Share (Thrift Shop) for $3  Then a few weeks later he bought an Olympus 90mm macro for $10 from the Cafe & Share again, so right now he is trying to make the mounts match up.

Here is a link to learn more about Lorne >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzFmVflK6Ls

He's very smart, and can do a lot of neat little things.

Usually it's the photographer. Not saying your not a good photographer, but I wouldn't blame the camera. I liked some of the photos you had, or the ones without the flash.

Seems to me that some of Pentax's lenses are already starting to come down again. At Henry's the DA 70mm F/2.4 ltd. is $599.99, the 17-70mm F/4 is $749.99, and finally the DA* 50-135mm F/2.8 is $1199.99.

That's more like it! :) Hopefully, they'll all come down again. Time for me to save up for some DA* and FA* lenses.

I think I'd probably sell my APS system .. actually that being said, I would still maybe keep my K10D..just get rid of the cropped specific lenses..

But I would probably need to sell my K10D to be able to fund for the 'new' full frame sensor..

Who thinks the K20 is a big camera?

I love the size of my K10D. At first it seemed really big compared to my old K110D, but now even with the battery grip I look at it, and it looks like a nice little bundle. That's even with a FA 50mm F/1.4.

I really like the size of it. And after seeing some 'sneak preview' photos of the K7, it looks even smaller, yet chucked full of options. I think the K7 will really get peoples attention. Only 8 more days! Can't wait!

Hey,

I saw a video of a broken K100D on vimeo..

He dropped it, and when he slips the batteries in, the shutter goes crazy fast.

Soo ... does the Pentax K100D do something that no one knows yet!

Maybe there is a firmware to let you do this? ;) :p

I feel quite good about that.

I really hope they keep SD cards. To me SD cards are more convenient and smaller.

Can't wait for it to be released.

I've heard people suggest a few of these but Sigma makes 24mm F/1.8, 28mm F/1.8, and a 30mm F/1.4.

I'm probably getting an A 35-105mm F/3.5, I'm really excited, because I reviews, and apparently it's really sharp. And I love the focal range it covers.

Should I be excited? :)

Great shots. I saw them on flickr, and thought it seemed like a lightroom kind of thing..

So, how are you liking lightroom?

I think that DSLR's should be photo specific. Let camcorders do the work when it comes to filming. I think any "serious" DSLR camera should not have a video capability..

Those are my thoughts.

What ISO is "normal" for you?

I'm always changing my ISO depending on lighting. I go anywhere from 100-800 ISO. I use my thumb dial to change the ISO, and my finger dial for aperture. It works perfect.

Oh, and I am using a K10D. But I'd say my default ISO is probably 400.

Hah, this is weird! Is that the DVP?

Because I was going down to Toronto this morning and took a photo of that sign too! (assuming it's the one on the DVP)

That's funny!

Good photos,

Personally ...

I'd take the:

Pentax 10-17mm Fisheye
Sigma 10-20mm
Pentax FA 50mm F/1.4

The 10-20mm is great wide angle, 10-17mm would be great for unique building shots, and the Pentax FA 50mm would be awesome for low light, portraits and just overall..

That is my personal preference. I've never used either of those lenses (getting an FA 50mm F/1.4 though!), but I'm not a fan of really big zoom range lenses ...

Have a good trip,

-Isaac
