On Saturday Oktoberfest is starting again here in Munich - crowds of people will be descending onto the city centre in search of completely overpriced beer (why, €11 for a litre of beer, yes please!), drunk tourists in cheap Dirndls and fake Lederhosen will be jumping onto the cycling tracks like they're suicidal and force me into F1-like evasive manoeuvres, the trains will be full of vomit, you'll need about half an hour to strong arm your way across the 150m of Mary's Square ... can I apply for asylum for three weeks in any of you guys' places? Preferences would be Norway, New Zealand, or Washington State/Montana/Minnesota.

Funny enough, my now relatively insignificant hometown of Geldern was once the seat of a powerful medieval duchy, the Duchy of Guelders. It was so influential and had such a vast territorial extent, that an entire province of the Netherlands was named after it: Gelderland :)

A fascinating country with an even more fascinating history. I grew up about three miles from the border - if you go on a bike trip and don't pay attention to where you are going, you may end up in a village where everyone suddenly speaks Dutch around you.

From the first major stock market crash (the tulip mania of 1637), to the largest corporation in world history (the Dutch East India Company's value at its height would equal $7.9 trillion today, almost ten times Apple's value), and their impressive history of land reclamation:

Four different people trying to steal from the same house? What even is this trend?! I've never heard of that phenomenon over here in Europe, almost seems to be an epidemic in the US

No, my textbooks say that butter is primarily saturated fat, which due to a lack of double bonds in the fatty acid chains has a high melting point, will be broken down in the stomach and small intestine through lipases, flock together into micelles, diffuse into enterocytes, get resynthesised as triacylglycerides ... Exciting stuff ...

Coincidentally though I really DID study pretty much the entire lipid metabolism today. After two years of medical school, the 'Physikum' (our German equivalent to the USMLE Step 1) is coming up in August, and I will be asked to demonstrate my knowledge (or lack thereof) of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology and Sociology, macroscopic and microscopic anatomy, biochemistry and physiology in two 4.5h written exams and one 1h oral exam

It is that time in his life when the 'Common medical student' retreats into the safety of his den for 1.5 to 2 months, and abandons his hobbies and social life, just as all his friends studying English literature or history are enjoying the summer outside ...

You're the mod, you tell us :D

I just spent the evening in a beer garden at the lake with my girlfriend and her father (a radiologist visiting for a congress), discussing fungal infections of the brain and the likes, sipping a cool Bavarian wheat beer.

Life is good.

Eat cheese and die - you had one more piece of cheese. Sleep in it and survive, and have many more opportunities to try many more cheeses.

It's just a very short-sighted pig :D

The 2019 BCN Ranking*Japanese market share report is out - Photo Rumors

Ricoh has a Japanese market share of 3.1% of DSLR sales - that means their share of the total ILC market will be smaller, and given that Japan is Pentax' strongest market, a global ILC market share of 1 to 2% sounds about right, maybe even a bit generous.

Because your example shows the clear intention of one person to insult another, whereas mine appertains to the neutral disposal of an inanimate object with no intention of harm or insult to anyone?

I, ehm ... I can't say I understand the importance our American friends place on flags, or why old ones shouldn't just go into the litter bin? I mean, it's a piece of cloth, not grandmas ashes?

Pentax has shrunk to making up maybe 1 to 2% of the market, why would any third-party manufacturer still be interested in supporting them? It doesn't make sense economically.

Not having skim milk in Germany, I took it as a joke until I moved to the UK, tried skim milk, and realised it's the truth. It is white, but tastes just like water  Which begs the question: whyyyyyyyy?!

APS-C, 50 MP. That goes with what asahiman seems to have claimed (more than 24 MP). It'd be the highest resolution APS-C camera to date, if I'm not mistaken, but we know Pentax is always good for something unconventional. But 8.3 fps at 50 MP? I'm not sure whether that's supposed to be correct, or whether the intern at Adorama creating the listings just typed in the K3's specifications. Because with an all new sensor, processor etc., I'd be very surprised to find exactly the same continuous shooting speed down to the decimal place. Especially with such a high resolution - that'd take some serious processing power.

Skills or equipment?

Oh Norm, if you want to slag me off, at least have the courage to make it a direct reply so I get notified.

I see your hubris has taken you on a crazy ride again. Claiming someone has no experience simply because they disagree with you, counting 'strikes' and fashioning yourself the 'umpire' calling people 'out', because apparently you consider yourself the ultimate authority, the one to put others in their place

Okay ...

Funny, we'll have to let all the professional photographers know. All those Reuters, NYT and AFP journalists running around with expensive primes, all those sports shooters at the Olympics lugging around the big artillery, all the National Geographic photographers with their D5s and massive tele-zooms. They'll be so relieved when you tell them that they (or their employer) don't need to spend tens of thousands on professional equipment, but the kit lens will do! I mean, considering most photographers don't get paid very well, I'm sure they are more than glad to spend the money on their kids' college funds or a new kitchen instead.

They do have the skills and experience, after all, and if skills is all you need ...

And that's the funny thing - I never said 'expensive gear automatically improves your photos'. I said that both skill and gear factor into it, and that gear plays a smaller role in certain fields than in others, but that it does play a role. But of course you (and many others around here) immediately resort to such straw man arguments, first inventing statements I never made, then attacking them.

And the next straw man argument.

Yeah, seriously. Never held that opinion, never propagated it. But it's arguing against a wall with you.

So you decided to completely ignore the bit of my post where I clearly stated that of course skills are important and often a better investment than gear?
