I think it had to do with improving film flatness at the rails, Kodak had changed to a thinner emulsion as the thicker emulsion was putting too much strain on film winders which were beginning to become more common in cameras. I can only surmise Pentax added the roller to help improve film handling...and as usual, without telling anyone.

Is A.I. the future of post processing?

In most cases the term A.I is just window dressing for Deep learning. In this case computers are just employing slightly more complex logic than the 7 basic states, but its not enough. Personally I won't be sold on A.I Until it can accurately do object/scene based keywording with a set-it-and-forget-it level of user input. I work with a rather advanced A.I software that has facial recognition, object recognition and scene analysis.

It makes quite a few mistakes. The Face recognition capability is reasonable and requires a bit of initial training, but once that is done it can pick out single faces even in photos of large groups. But objects are problematic, as a slight change in angle and lighting on the object in question can confuse the program.

....really?

Automatic Hyperfocal

This is probably the biggest issue with executing hyperfocal focusing with current lenses. The lack of an accurate hard stop point at infinity makes getting the hyperfocal point nearly impossible.

In my experience the qualities of the paper* used has a significant effect on the amount of Ink feathering notebooks from Rhodia and Moleskin are designed to have the best compatibility with the majority of fountain pen inks. Also the amount of ink the pen lays on the paper also has an effect - broader nibs are more prone to feathering and ink bleed through than fine ones. Thinner papers are more prone to Bleed through, while thicker ones are more prone to feathering and sometimes dimensional instabilities due to the presence of moisture from the ink.

* there are a surprising number of variables involved in paper manufacture for instance: the amount cotton present, the method used to remove lignin from the pulp, paper PH, thickness and texture...etc

It is low on my list of concerns as well, however I have only seldom made use of Wi-Fi connectivity at home or at work. I had one artistic director request I pair my cameras to his laptop - that is one way malicious code can be transferred if the user of the laptop in question is careless with security.

The USB-C connector will serve as a replacement for the HDMI port. With the amount space taken up by the HDMI port you could fit two USB-C connectors in that place.

Also the speed of data transmission from USB3.2 would be a welcome advancement...though SD card data transmission speeds would be a bottleneck.

Stevebrot has a point: I have an external USB-C M.2 NVME drive I use for speedy transport libraries of RAW and TIFF files, this thing gets so hot my cat won't sleep on it.

Expecting the famous Pentax marketing team to do anything is a bit futile, these guys could hold the cure for the worst maladies on earth and people would still be in the dark about it.

Occasionally I have had students who haven't heard of Pentax, Leica, Hasselblad, or Rollei. I do what I can to remedy their ignorance.

I get a bit tired of hearing this statement - If this is the case you weren't passionate about it in the first place. If you really have a passion for something you will stick to it, especially in the face of adversity. There is much to be said of the trait of tenacity, I personally consider having it is equally important as talent. Certainly having a modicum of talent is crucial for any creative career but having the pluck to stick it through the good times and bad is just, if not more important. Do you think any of the great photographers present and past do not have any passion for what they are doing?

HA the rumor mill is in high gear! I at least hope they adopt USB-C, With the increased bandwidth of USB-C interface it would be much easier to tether the camera. Also they could dispose of the HDMI port which would increase space on the camera for more useful I/O features.

And how would such a display be powered? It is better to use a wireless connection to a smartphone. I've had to slap down some DPR users who made similar suggestions.

It certainly is, my solution was to buy a set of CMYK inks* [ or the manufacturers closest approximation] and put them in dropper bottles so I can create any colour I desire. Though there are specialist hues [ Noodlers Apache Sunset** is particularly nice] that I work with that I use quite a bit so I buy a bottle of it rather than mix it myself.

* For noodlers inks the closest inks to CMYK is Navajo turquoise, Shias rose, Noodlers yellow, and Noodlers forgery resistant Bulletproof black.

Personally doubt the R&D/production costs were considerably more than producing any of their older sensors, In a characteristic move Pentax made a stepwise improvement in the AF module it isn't a drastic departure from previous designs, It is merely a refinement.

I refuse to carry pens or pencils in my pockets. This comes from an unfortunate experience in my youth where a freshly sharpened pencil which I stowed in my pocket, the pointed end of which got uncomfortably close to private property.

I use the fountain pen equivalent of this from Lamy, though I detested the supplied scratchy ExtraFine nib and replaced it with a custom 16K red gold 1.1mm oblique cut nib. I use Noodlers inks, at present I have their vibrant Navajo turquoise ink in my pen.

I also use a Faber Castell E-motion 1.2mm mechanical pencil with Ebony wood grip and polished chrome fittings.

For more formal occasions I use a carbon fiber and silver fountain pen from Porsche design.

The AF frame in that picture is off center and that degree of asymmetry is incredibly vexing to me.

Additional twist: Pentax moves the linear sensors on the edges of the AF frame even closer to the edge, thus making them completely useless.

Why yes!, spring loaded naturally, it's designed to swing open at the optimal angle to hit you squarely in the face.

Interesting theory, however in comparison the tiny DJI Osmo pocket 2 can encode 4K video and audio with AF, stabilize the camera mounted gimbal head...all at the same time. DJI are more than likely are using independent systems in parallel with instead of trying to do encode and handle real time sensory I/O on a single core. Perhaps Pentax is juggling too many balls one handed when a distributed IBIS control system and a separate chip for encoding video/audio would have been a more efficient means of managing the image processing pipeline and also allow for stabilization with equivalent power draw of doing it on a single core.

Fast 50mm manual lens choice?

Easily over 200 by now. I don't have an exact head-count as I recently took on a few new [Leica,Voigtlander,Pentax,Zenitar] 50mm lenses and and assortment of old 50mm lenses some of which are in bad need of repair.

There are times I wish I had my optics bench up and running as the past decade has been really interesting as far as lenses go.

Any reason to keep a Pentax digital spotmeter when I only have a K-1 now?

There is still a market out there for people who use spotmeters, they aren't just finding their way into the hands of collectors who will shun them if they don't have their original documentation and packaging. I have had three students this year alone purchase spotmeters - one was lucky to score a Zone VI modified Pentax spotmeter...I recall that set him back quite a bit.

I have always thought of photographers as working a lot like a sniper, it is pointless to fire multiple shots when only one good shot is what you need.

I'll add my opinion to the mix.

I'm inclined to agree, though with the considerable advances in 3D printing an alternative explanation could be this is still a mock-up.. albeit a very detailed one.

The lack of a built-in flash is rather illuminating... at least to me, it indicates a possibility that Pentax/Ricoh could be working on a wireless flash solution to make up for the lack of an in-built flash on this model, and on the K-1 MKII.

Such a development would be a welcome one, especially if Pentax developed a partnership with a flash manufacturer (e.g Profoto,Elinca) that could alleviate the strain on Ricohs budget and R&D faculties, and develop novel and powerful flash tools.

You would probably be rather alarmed if you ever saw me handle my cameras in the studio, In video footage have noticed I unconsciously do this short right to left hand camera toss every now and then. Assistants that get very nervous every time I do it. But that is the trick, I have been doing it for decades I have never missed catching the camera.
