After the K-x

But you may help me about the issue :) The K-x is on-leave for me. Yet, compering it to the other two what can you say about the IQ and ISO performance? As fark as I've seen Canon 40D, and any other Canon basically, has that -somewhat- qualified 'Canon smoothness' while even RAW files that come out of a Pentax is fairly and kinda too sharp. Besides that, could you compare these two cameras, let's say shoot the same thing with the same settings with similar lenses (kitlenses may get handy if you have both). Some say the ISO performance of the 40D is just like the K-x and some say it's just like the K20D, could you enlight me about this? Thank you :)

I haven't seen any significant advantage of SR in K-x, except for the tele-zoom shots around 250-300mm. And about the K-x's being an 'ideal concert camera', well: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/82293-kx-use-15.html#post1627773 I really can't so..

So here I am going to the final-point. K20D or 40D. I've heard that K20D is so smart about one of the photographical genres that I'm interested in, which is shooting action in concerts. Also compering the ISO performance of K20D, 40D and the K-x, how are they different from eachother?

Thanks for the responses. A quick answer for, Y U NO choose Nikon. Because the only Nikon I can get for that price range is the D200 and buying it over the K10D would be pointless imo.

I haven't got so many lenses. The kits of 18-55, 55-300 and a lovely Helios 44K. I don't deny the fact that old Pentax lenses are suberb, just after two years with the Helios I'm kinda sick of MF. Also I can always use the old Pentax primes on other DSLRs with an adapter, right?

Using the K-x in last two years was always the same story. Amazing IQ but using it, just never felt fun.

Now, the Canon 40D seems to be the optimal option (it's actually cheaper than the K20D as second hand). ISO looks very similar to K-x and I wonder if the IQ is worse or not?

In any case, I'd have a walk-around lens like a 18-135 (or keep the kit lenses if I'll stick with Pentax), a 50mm AF finally and a wide angle or a telephoto later. I'm not working with/in a studio. I'm pretty much that average user that says: "I'm into shooting anyway/anything and some portraits." So, with a very realistic prediction, I won't have L or Limited lenses for a long long time and I'm just trying to find a decent camera that can bring up good IQ as well as 'that DLR feeling that K-x doesn't goddamn give".

Hi there,

Recently I decided to sorta 'upgrade' my camera. Well, not exactly upgrage, let's say ehm.. enlarge! Nothing against the K-x, it's really solid machine. The only downside for me was, I've never found the ISO performance that good. But it just doesn't feel right. The outcomes are beautiful but the I've never quite enjoyed using it so I decided to make a change and that being to pick up one of these two cameras:

Pentax K10D: (Because the K20D is still pretty expensive around here) I think the K10D would satisfy the need for size. As I've seen so far, it has a really bad ISO/AF performance but the CCD makes the photograph truly good.

Canon 40D: This camera is about to become the reason for me to leave Pentax brand. The price is really good. IQ is good. AF is said to be amazing. I don't really know much about ISO performance though. Also there is a wide variety of Canon AF lenses. But I have doubts about Canon, to be honest. Once I used a friend of mine's Canon 550D with 17-85 and 50 f1.8, well.. It was good in low light and AF and anything but the photos were all kinda 'smooth' and soft. I don't know if it is about the setting or a general feature of Canon DSLRs. Anyway, the 40D seems to be the best option but still I need a second best opinion.

So, K-x just wasn't the right camera for me. What should take next?

Alright, seriously, why there isn't a 50mm/f1.8 lens of Pentax?

I simply cannot understand this phenomenon in any technical, economical or marketing term. I mean, the cheap 50mm f/1.8 lens is an essential for everyone who are not able to buy and expensive prime, and AF, lens, from the some studio photographers to newbies with 'oh dude, I got the background blurred. this is so going to be front page on dA' concerns.

I mean, I might not to get an official answer here but, can anyone please explain this to me why with an answer rather than just: "you know the 35mm is out, the 50mm most probably be out in the next decade".

I guess I need to clearify some points, they seem to be misunderstood. First, I'm not looking for a FF body and in fact the 7D was just an example, my actual plan if I ever sell my Pentax gear is buying a 50D, due to the realities of a college student's budjet etc. Also I know that photography is not about the device you use. Second, I have nothing against the performance of the K-x. It's really good enough for me. I'm just questioning the size and how it feels in my hand not the else see how it looks.

Hi there,

Before anything. This review I just made today about Pentax K-x is kinda like a summary of my situation: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-digital-slr-camera-reviews/73845-p...ml#post1250931

I've been a proud Pentaxian for a year now. At the very first moment I saw what my Pentax can do, I knew I made the right decision. The K-x was, and still is, better than any camera in it's range. But, as it's written on the review something's just missing. I know the Pentax cameras are usally relativly small and it seems to be that this is going on forever but, I personally beileve that there should be a line between being compact and being pro or semi-pro. And, yes, this is all there is. I just can't get the feeling from the K-x.

Now, the K-5 is out. Yet another superb but small camera and with a price you can buy a Canon 7D instead, well, let's say I'm having a serious dilemma for my future investments..

P.S: Actually there is one more issue. Why the hell Pentax don't/wouldn't produce a f1.8/1.7 50mm lens with a reasonable price!

Camera Review
I'm not goint to write so much about this camera. The K-x is my first D-SLR and so far it truly satisfied me. The IQ is simply great. Both RAW and JPEG results are really good. This camera can even compete with Canon 40/50/60Ds and Nikon 90/300/7000Ds. The sensor does it's job far beyond than just fine, it is very good. High-ISO performance is already known, all that I add up is, don't expect a miracle from a camera with this price but still it beats every Pentax except for the new K-5. Maybe the strongest pro of this camera is it's price. The K-x is cheap but a not cheap camera, that means you feel that it's a good investment on your hobby and for a price like this, the K-x is a diamond in the dirt.

But, not everything about this camera is amazing. Now, for the record and who'll read this review I must say that the K-x is really, really, really small. On one side this is great. The camera is easy to carry around but you can't get the "DSLR feeling" of large-sized camera, almost feels like you are using a SLR-like.. Still, it fits in the hand. I'm a big man with big hands and I've never had problems with the handling of the camera except for that feeling issue. Another downside is the AF points, the K-x has any. Not a huge trouble if you're not used to use them, but if you are, well, it takes time to get comfy. Size literally matters about this camera. I had a chance to compare the K-x with Nikon D90. The IQ is very similar and K-x beats in the ISO performance but the D90 had a larger viewfinder and I can say after the K-x i felt almost like a FF camera.

To conclude, Pentax K-x is a really solid purchase. The price is great and gets even better when you see the photos. It's easy to use, pratic, powerful machine. The only downside is you, at least I, can't get the feeling of using a semi-pro camera while using it. But you'll get it when you see the results.

Need Some Advice for New Gear

Hello there,

In Feb. '10, I bought a Pentax K-x with 18-55 and 55-300 lenses. So far I'm pretty happy with my camera. Maybe the only con of it is the size, you know the k-x is a really really really small camera.. But I'm still having good times with it nonetheless.

I barely like the kit lens. I have to admit, it is not a good lens at all. The 55-300 is good though. But, I pretty much never used those two and instead my good old Helios 44K-4 f2.0. So far, I think I shot almost 10k photographs and most of them taken with the Helios. I love taking portraits, especally spontaneous. That's where my problem comes into. I guess I need a new prime lens. In addition to the issue of using a manual lens the Helios is good for only the portraits. I can tell you, it's really bad for nothing but close-ups.

I've been thinking, "why the hell Pentax doesn't produce a average-priced 50mm 1.8!", and since it doesnt' seem to happen soon I'm looking for some advice.

There is the 50mm f1.4 FA but the price is really out of my limits. Is there anything I can find instead?

And also I found some manual second-hand lenses.

Cosina 50mm 1.8 (40 Euro)
Porst 28mm f2.8 MC G (20 Euro)
Pentax MC-M 50mm f1.4 (70 Euro)
SMC Pentax-A 50mm F2.0 (50 Euro)
SMC Pentax-m 50mm F1.7 (60 Euro)

Last question: Is there a way use a 50mm Canon/Nikon lens with Pentax?

Thank you.

Basically I'm asking this pretty much for curiosity. I own a Canon AE-1 with 50mm 1.8 FD lens and just wondered if I could use the lens with my Pentax.

I have almost no hope anyways :)

Battery for K-x (and other cameras that take AA's)

I recently bought GP ReCyko batteries. Before replacing the batteries I was using standard Duracell AA ones. Here's what I did step by step:

1. Set the battery type to AUTO then removed the Duracell AA's and installed GP's.
2. Waited 30-60 seconds before I turn on the camera.
3. Camera turned on with the battery indicator red.
4. Took a couple of shots with flash on and LV.
5. Turned off the camera waited again for 30-60 seconds.
6. Set the battery type to "NiMH" and turned it off.
7. Waiting again then turning on, battery indicator was still red.
8. Reinstalled Duracells again, the indicator turned green, took a couple of shots and turned on the camera to put GP's back.
8. Turned the camera on again took shots with flash, turned off then turned on, the indicator is still red.

I don't know what did wrong.. The indicator should have been green by now.

Yet Another K-x Battery Problem

I've been using GP 2700 rechargeable NiMH batteries for a while. I used them with my old Fuji S700 and had no problem. When I try to use K-x with GP batteries, the camera just don't turn on.. I tried to wait before I turn the camera on, tried re-charging them, nothing worked out so far. Now, I know K-x is pretty picky about the batteries but I didn't expect to have problems with the GPs. They are really powerful batteries (2600mAh) and I can't understand why this issue occurs. I also tried Duracell batteries, lasted only about 80 shots. What's more surprising is, I'm using the batteries that comes with the kit. I think it's been over 1100 shots and still going pretty "green".

So, I'd like to use my GP batteries, is that possible in any way or do I have to buy Eneloops like everyone had to..

Helios Issue

Yesterday, I got myself a K-x, finally.. It's in the kit with 18-55, 55-300. So far, I'm a little disappointed about the sharpness and the low-light performance, well I was expecting less noise, but in the daylight the camera is pretty good. I'm impressed with the handling also because it really is a very small camera but feels like a lot bigger.

I don't if it's the right place to ask this but anyway, I bought a Zenit Helios 44K-4 F/2. I was pretty excited until I tried the lens out. Helios lenses, at least for me, are all about the "rounding" bokeh and seems like my Helios lens does not do it's purpose. I realized something today that there are two Helios 44K-4 lenses. One is Helios MC 44K-4 and the other is Helios 44K-4. I have the second. I don't know any difference between those two. I did a quick research but I couldn't find anything.

There is actually another thing that I can't be sure if it's a problem or not. The lens has a range of F/2 to F/16. But I cannot change it when the lens is mounted to the camera. Even more, I tried to mount it when it's on F/16 but while putting it in, the lens automatically, or maybe somehow mechanically, sets the A F/2.

I'll upload some photos later also. I really want to figure out this.

Thank you.

Looking For the K-x in Vancouver..

So, this is the last border between me and my future K-x. One of my friends, a cameraman who's shooting the Winter Olimpics for the national Turkish televsion, is in Vancouver. This situation is kinda hard because, well, he doesn't speak English, nor French.. I wanted him to buy me a K-x from there because here in Turkey the prices are really high due to taxes. I spoke to him a couple of days ago and he said, he found only one store that sells Pentax stuff, where there is not a K-x.. Despite the extreme lack of communication between him and the store owner, I assume he all he could do is writing Pentax K-x on a little paper and show it to guy, he learned that there are only K20D (800$, body only) and K-7 (1.500$, with the 18-55) are available.

So, since BH Photo, somewhy, don't ship stuff to hotels, I gotta find places that sells Pentax in Vancouver. Hope you can help me about this..

Thank you.

Well, it seems like my concerns were true. Today I tried a Nikon D5000 and it was too small for my hands and I felt like I'm still using a SLR-like. Then I learned that the K-x is even smaller than the D5000. It's just so bad, K-x is like the perfect machine for me with it's price, quality and high ISO performance but it's just too small..

Hello there :) I'm soon to be one of the Pentax users. After spending two and an almost half years with my Fuji S5700, I finally can own a DSLR. I've been researching for Pentax cameras for a while and they are seem to have better performance, yet lower prices, than Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras. I had dediced to buy the K20D until the K-X came up. Now, I'm living the dilemma. K-X sure has a way better ISO performance but images that taken with K20D looks sharper and better. Also there is a significant price gap of over 300 $ between those two. I know the body is not major issue, but lenses are and I can buy one more or two lenses with that 300 $ so buying a K-X is kind of a more efficient act. But again there is something about the camera that I don't like: the size of it! I'm a tall and big guy with big hands and let's say Canon 40D and 5D have the perfect size for my hands. The K-X looks like a really small camera and I don't like the idea of having a DSLR that is so tiny, I've been using a small camera for too long now. I really don't know which camera is better for me.
