Android remote to shoot Pentax camera

UPDATE 10/24/2011: I added a time lapse feature to the app ... Enjoy :)

I guess that most of you already heard about transforming your iPhone into a remote controler for DSLR. So here is the application to do the same with any android phone.
This can work with any Pentax DSLR using IR for remote control.

I used the ideas and thread started by piesforyou here :

And as I couldn't find the application allowing to shoot my K-x I developed it for my HTC Desire :p

This application allows to do simple shot, time lapse, long exposure shot (using the bulb mode) and makes it easier to calculate the time to have a correct exposition in bulb mode.

So the first screen is to release the trigger a single time, using the exposition parameters of the camera. Easy press the "shoot" button :

The second screen is used for time lapse. Easy to use, choose the time between each shot (from 1sec to 99 minutes) and select the number of pictures to take (from 10 to 1000).

The third sreen allows the long exposure using the bulb mode. The principle is simple : a signal is sent to open the shutter and a second signal after the choosen time to close it :

The third screen is used to calculate the correct exposure time in the bulb mode. To do so enter the paramteres given by your camera, using the biggest diaphragme aperture and the highest iso and select the aperture and iso you want to use for your final picture and press calculate.

Finaly the last screen is giving some small explanation on how to use but will probably change to some new feature (when I find some interesting one)...

I tried to improve the sound quality and level to get a better range of shooting.
But if you are in Europe this might not work. Simply because of the sound limitation of your phone. To remove this limitation there are some applications on the market... For me it works fine (HTC Desire)

Any comment or recommendation considering this application is always welcome. And if you have any idea of some more features that could be usefull share it and I will see what I can do...

You can find the .apk here

Finally ready to upgrade from my K20D to a K5!! Any concerns?

I loved my K20, but after getting the K5, the K20 is not used at all. Selling here where I stay is not an option and I planned to keep it as a back-up, but I actually do feel guilty about not using it. So still a very good back-up, but in the meanwhile, hurry up, get your K5 and I guarantee that you will have a blast!

Recommend if you are in US only buy from US. The Adorama and BHPhoto prices aren't that far off and there appears to be some disagreement as to whether Canada units are honored in US for warranty.
Also, buy the 2 year Pentax extended warranty as it is cheap.
The stains are long gone.
There still appears to be a few mentions of release button and mirror flop issues, but the majority of units are good.
Mine has been flawless and it is an old-ish serial number.
You can check the serial number database here to see what folks are reporting.
I'd buy body only as you can buy a kit WR lens for less than $200 if you decide you need it.

DPReview's bias at work, K-5 gets a bum rap.

How about some sort of blind testing? Someone takes the studio shots with all the cameras, and someone else gets the (renamed) files to write the review with, not knowing which files were from which camera.

I am reading all of this with quite a bit of fascination. It's like the DXO results....when they say the K-r is not rated as high as Pentaxians would think, DXO's test methods are obviously shit. But when the K-5 is proclaimed king of the hill, well, DXO rocks!

Same here. I wonder if there would be any scrutinizing of the test methods if DPR showed that K5 images were clearly better than Canon, and actually said so in print :-)

Not saying I don't agree with you guys to some degree. But as another poster said, never trust one particular review as the definitive answer to your question. Look at many results, and really, who cares if DPR is biased. Aren't we all biased? You made up your mind to buy the K5, there's no need to justify the purchase if it makes you happy.

I dunno, OGL: The way I see it, I'm an old Canon shooter who thought a T90 was cool and whizbang but needed mechanical cranks. I *do* hear a lot of complaining about cameras with more computer and sensor packed into each than NASA fielded before like 1998.....that aren't even in hand yet.

Me, I'm still not fully- sold on this digital thing. Has its good points, but it seems like an awful pain in the arse, especially if people are gonna talk this way. Ye *Gods* I've spent more on this stuff than I ever had in my life and I *still* can't see what I'm doing till I scrape up *more* for some kind of monitor, and forget about printing. To me, a lot of this is like walking up to Mr. Spock and saying his model of tricorder is some kind of lame. :)

I mean, really, we *love* the details, really. Nothing wrong with that. But, when it comes down to it, a camera is a camera, and you 'get the shot.' I'm getting used to the new-fangled cameras, but what they *plug into* means a kid with an iphone gets stuff out while I'm dragging and dropping folders.

This K20 is still *sci-fi* to me. I skipped some time in this world from when I imagined 'SR' would have to mean some kind of magic gyrosope. Take a step back, is all. Make photos. (And if some company *really* wants to get in my good graces, it's not the cameras. It's the computers.)

good input.

it's a shame if pentax doesn't seem to want to focus on the US market, and no, i won't jump ship just because pentax's marketing is bad.

i'll get a camera that has the functionality that i need and most importantly, the support and backup from the manufacturer.

as i've mentioned in quite a few threads, pentax doesn't seem to have any vision or can't project their vision, at least not in the US market.

the japanese website description about the k5 was excellent. now, why can't all other pentax sites use the same material?

my kx still works great. i'd like to move up and the k5 looks very nice, but beyond the k5, what else is there? the 18-135? the 35mm f2.4? what's the plan pentax?

moreover, $1599 for the k5 is just waaaay too much, at least for me, for a body.
645D is very nice. how many folks can afford a $10k camera?

i had promised myself that photokina 2010 will be my deciding point.
no, pentax is not doomed, but i might just have to go elsewhere to move up.

Hey i'm innocent, it is rather humorous because people get so passionate, fired up and serious over something like a damn camera. People go to war over food, water, oil etc the rest of you are going to war over a hunk of glass, get real!

It's funny to watch so much fire and hatred over stupid shit.

Zack probably shouldn't have lost his cool, but probably just lost it after reading thread upon thread of doom, gloom and negativity he probably just snapped and sadly Falk was in the firing line.

Unlike many I don't take the internet and what is published on it as serious as I probably should.

My attitude is its a ****ing camera, go out use it, play with it, enjoy it and take some pretty pictures, that's what it's built for in the first place.

It's like the people who are Muslim and those who become fanatics totally forgetting the initial point of the religion to begin with, the behaviour of many on here is bordering on the same sort of sick fanaticism.

To be honest I love my Pentax gear, so far I haven't shot with an FA ltd lens and I don't really intend to buy one either. The discontinuation of FA is of little consequence to me and to many people to I suspect, they are film era lenses are reality is don't fit in with Pentax's clear APS-C & MF strategy. There won't be a FF Pentax for a long time if ever, deal with it!

I just want to say that I stand by what I have been told:
The FA Limiteds are discontinued.

Falk additionally added that he saw the latest dealer list for Germany/Swiss/Austria where they are listed as EOL (end of life).
I have got further confirmation today that this is correct.
I didn't ask if this is world-wide, though.
I think so, but I don't know.
It may be, as Roland suggested, that they will survive as a Japan-only item, like e.g. the 600mm lens. Or perhaps Pentax may reconsider the decision if the outcry is loud enough?

PS: I must say that I am a bit irritated about the moderator activity regarding this topic. I am considering not posting here anymore.

Honest would be building proper (read: perfect) crop dslr, which we all know is possible right now.

They're not honest (I mean whole canikolypasontax family) because if they would, they wouldn't be able to sell any more upgrades anymore.

This is awesome! i tried it out...

It took the guy 15 min to find out, but dark frame subtraction cannot be disabled for shots over 30 secs, so no change from the k-7 in that point.

Regarding tethering and Pentax Remote Assistant, both don't work with the k-5

Thanks to everyone in on the forums for helping me get interval shooting working the other day.

A 13 hour time lapse of daffodils growing taken with a Pentax K20d and off camera flash (strobist). The jump in the middle is due to my flash batteries going out at around 5am and missing about 2 hours. Hope you enjoy.

It's nice. I have the I version. Triggers well as optical slave, has decent amount of power and reasonable to fast recycle time. Despite it's price seems really well made. Solid, no loose plastic, comes with nice soft pouch and off camera stand. It has all the features one might need in simple manual flash.

The only things i might complain about is - no zoom head, but that was already known prior purchase. This makes it waste a lot of power when the whole wide coverage is not needed. E.g. with 50mm lens.
It makes a bit of plastic smell after several full power discharges.

Another thing that was discovered only after purchase - bad button design. They have to be pressed really hard - even forcefully to make contact. It makes it hard to quickly adjust power or switch mode. At first i almost thought that my flash dosn't powers on. Maybe it has been fixed in version II. But i've found there is an easy enough DIY fix for v I:
curing YN460′s mushy button syndrome WS's Blog
P.S. Ive seen better fixes then in the link. This is a bit unsafe, because the foil can detach and turn the camera on or start triggering it by PILOT button. Better ones use single layer of foil with reliable attach method.
