The ebay seller has the lens back for $369 US, on a different listing Pentax HD Da 55 300mm F 4 0 5 8 Ed WR Lens for K 3 K 50 K 500 K 5 II K 5 IIS K 3 027075273993 | eBay

Question about warranty: Doesn't Pentax/Ricoh Canada require a copy of your sales receipt for warranty service and doesn't that receipt have to show you bought the product from an authorized dealer?

Is this ebay seller issuing receipts with Carmen's (authorized dealer) as the seller? I highly doubt it

Pentax 18-135 or Sigma 18-200 contemporary?

Thanks for the suggestion. Both have good IQ and would fit my size requirements but AF isn't great on either, from what I've read.

Pentax 18-135 or Sigma 18-200 contemporary?

The range I'd use the most is 50-150mm
Size and weight keep the Tamron 70-200 2.8 off my radar- I want something under 600g, relatively compact, quick AF and best possible IQ. I rather stay away from SDM lenses so that puts the 18-270 out of the picture too.
Anyone have other suggestions?

I was away from Pentax for a couple years but I'm just back in with new K5 11s and 40mm Ltd. A walk around zoom is next on my shopping list

I wonder if the Sigma's AF is as quick and accurate as the Pentax is reported to be.. No Pentax user reviews to be found

The new Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM contemporary has garnered some decent reviews.

Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro Contemporary Lens Review
I'm considering buying it instead of my original choice, the Pentax 18-135mm. the Sigma has a lot longer reach, potentially sharper, nearly exact same weight, size and price(Canada), but no WR, which I can do without in exchange for better IQ.
Primary use: :dogs outdoors
Any thoughts, for or against, going with the Sigma? thanks

I guess I've proven my self as just a 'commoner'- Cuchulainn you were right- I was looking at the file #'s and not the exif data. I checked exif data on PhotoMe and the actuations only jumped by 100, undoubtedly test shots.

sorry everybody:o

Pentax repaired my camera but....

Pentax Canada repaired a damaged lens mount and auto focus on my K200D, at a cost of $340. The problem is the camera went in with 2200 actuations and came back with 7300! How can this be? I'm sure they didn't pull a switcheroo. If they replaced some electronic guts that affected shutter count shouldn't I expect NEW parts?

I'm upset because IMO this has diminished the resale value.
I had the expensive repair done because I felt the camera still had a good value having such a low shutter count. Now not so much.

What can or should I do?

Can my K200d be repaired?

For me mid-range = Kx with top lcd, AF points, weather seal, bigger & better build. i could handle the K-7 new price but it just felt very uncomfortable in my hands- especially don't like the reccess/dimple on the front of the grip, though I realize the design was probably to compensate for the overall smaller dimensions of the camera's grip. Also, the k-7 grip material felt very hard/slippery compared to the k200d's more 'rubbery' feel.
Feel is very important to me. I'll go with my K200d until Pentax addresses my needs- up until 2012- If not maybe I'll have to switch brands.

So I got a quote from Pentax Canada-- $340 + tax to repair the mount and auto focus which was apparently also damaged in the drop. I guess I'll get it done. it's pricey but the camera only has 2200 actuations on it . Pentax already has $50 of my money for estimate- goes toward cost of repair if I get it done, no refund if I don't.

What do you think, $340 too much? I just want something to hold me over to a new midrange model next year (K5/K300d?) I dont like the the Kx and K-7 for reasons mentioned earlier.

I want to thank all for your very thoughtful ideas and suggestions.

I must say that the responses i received were completely unexpected. Am I on Pop Mechanics Forum? I thought Araldite was a media crazed Hollywood-brat lawyer ;)
Seriously, I guess my inquiry was misunderstood. What i was really looking for was an opinion as to whether the damage described sounded like something that could be repaired by Pentax at a reasonable cost.

I'm nowhere near brave enough to start drilling holes, inserting rods and/or glues--I'd f**k it up guaranteed!...and then surely be left with a further damaged camera.

Anyway, it's going in to Pentax. Sorry if i disappointed some of you NASA guys. I'll let you know what happens,

In the meantime... I'm reconsidering the K20D (and it's heavier weight). I have an opportunity to buy a used but mint K20D for $560 CAN. Only 1500 actuations, good price?

Thanks again.

Fatter screws won't fit through the mount ring that they are fastening.

I think the electrical contacts are fine. They protrude from the plastic case and the mount ring is screwed over top. the mount ring was tore off but the contacts appear undamaged..

I looked at the specs of the K20d: it's a 100g heavier than the k200d. Too heavy. guess i'm hard to please -the kx is not sturdy enough and the K20d is over the top. guess Im paying to get the k200d fixed.

EDIT 05/22: extra weight of the k20d isnt an issue after all- Ive been using NiMHs in my K200d which makes the weight very close to a K20d.

Had a closer look- seems the screw holes are stripped out. I would have expected the screws to be fastened to the metal frame but nope, to the plastic body instead.
Had my hands on a K-x today. I just didn't feel substantial enough- felt like if it was dropped it would be in 100 pieces. Not that the weight and 'ruggedness' of the the K200d did me much good.

My K200 got knocked off a table and hit hardwood floors. I'll try to describe the damage as I cant provide a pic: the lens mount ring ripped right off the body. The lens must have hit the floor first at an angle. i was left with the lens separated from the body with the mount ring attached to it, the screws came right out with it. So the body is bare> no mount ring. screws and all pulled right off. The lens appears to have escaped damage - I was able to remove the mount ring from it and it looks fine- kudos to the 50-200mm build.

Sound like this is repairable damage to the K200d??

I hope so because otherwise I'll be stuck waiting for a new model release- the K-x is too small for my hands (and missing 2 features I want: top-side lcd and viewfinder AF points ) and the K7 is beyond my budget.
