How many megapixels do you need (rant)?

I like to be able to look up close as well as take in the whole picture. The more detail the better.
For example, today I took a picture of a cherry tree. It is inviting as a whole as well as inviting to come in close to see the cherries. Yummy.

My favorite is the "one inch" sensor, which has a 16mm diagonal!

yes. I am using it with the k mount adaptor, but I would love to try it out on a 67 film camera. It also plays well with the 1.7x converter which adds a modest autofocus.

I know what you mean, I shoot the 600mm f4 which weighs the same as your 400/2.8, but extends a little longer. A 6 inch aperture is not something to fumble with. The 500/5.6 weighs half as much.

I have paired it with the SMC Takumar 6x7 600mm F4, 6x7 to K mount adapter.
Also the SMC Pentax 500mm F4.5
It seems to do work fine with these.

But I think your case is different. You are starting with an f8 lens and your 2x converter will make it f16. If the pixels on your camera are about 5 microns, you are already at the diffraction limit. I think that a perfect 2x converter would not give you more resolution on the target. It will give you more dynamic range though, since you can divide the light over more pixels.

I was never happy with the scans that are offered with film development. The standard resolution they offer is no where near the resolution of a slow medium format film.

Have you considered scanning the negatives yourself? Or better yet, go from negative prints, or positive to projection display without ever digitizing it.

You can go a little further than that. How about pair the SMC Pentax-F 1.7x AF Adapter with the SMC Takumar 6x7 600mm F4, and the 6x7 to K mount adapter?

Camera Gear for multi day hikes

I did miss the Irix 15mm. 28 mm was not short enough for a lot of shots. But the composite panarams do the trick and carrying multiple lenses is a lot of weight.
The bivy is 1 pound, and i have a 2 lb. "two person" tent that I might carry next time.

Here is the pointer to the REI page on lighter backpacking gear.
https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ultralight-backpacking.html
The other big change I did was to lose 25 pounds of belly fat since spring. That helps a lot.

I take a strong interest in this thread. thanks for this.

Early this summer it did a 3 night trip with
K-1 with 24-70 and Iris 15mm and a Manfrotto Pixi Mini Tripod
I put way too much weight in the backpack and suffered for it. I did get some astro photos from the darkest sky I have ever visited though. The mini tripod is fine for astrophotography. I also brought some gel ND filters and did a few water fall shots.

Last week I packed lighter for a 40 mile trip, 4 nights, and a 12000ft. pass.
K-1 with 28-105 (1450 g), a Manfrotto Pixi Mini Tripod and an Iphone camera.
<40 pounds backpack weight including enough food for a sixth day. 1 lb. bivy instead of tent and an ultralight backpack and sleeping bag made by GoLite. You can go through REI web page on packing light to get some ideas.
I haven't yet processed my K-1 photos, but I am very happy with the shots I got from my cell phone camera. I used the tripod to get a few pixel shift photos. I am a big fan of resolution. I also shot some composite panarams with the 28-105, because the expansive views from the top can be captured in 28mm.

I like Deus Ursus sugestions, since my K-1 was not handy I took more cell phone pictures than I would have if the K-1 was in easy reach.

OUCH! Dishonest, really?
I hope you will forgive me for not making this more explicit earlier.
The quoted charge was not for insurance, it was stated that it was a diagnostic fee.
It says: "If this cost estimate is refused a $45.00 diagnostic fee will apply."

Thanks for all the advice.
I am a little surprised that some took my post as a flame on Precision, or that I am demanding something of them outside of the norm. I thank you for pointing me to the alternate Precision Terms and Conditions page that I missed when Precision sent me to the first Terms and Conditions page. Had I found the alternate Terms and Conditions before sending this in, I would not have relied on the first Terms and Conditions which said I would be responsible for the cost of return ground shipping only. ($18.95)
I think they should not have conflicting Terms and Conditions pages, but I will go with the repair and move on.
Thanks for helping me think this through,
Teddy

They sent you a different "Terms and Conditions" than they sent me. Here is the one I got:
https://www.precisioncamera.com/termsandconditions-Ricoh.html
3. If your unit is outside the terms of the manufacturer's limited warranty or extended warranty, you will be contacted in writing with an estimate of the service repair. If you choose to decline this estimate your product will be returned to you unrepaired and you are responsible for the cost of return ground shipping only at $18.50 (Signature Required) plus any applicable insurance coverage. If you approve this estimate we will return the repaired product to you at the Ship-To address you furnished when you authorized service, once service is complete.
The one they sent me makes no mention of a diagnostic fee.
Pretty crazy!

I got the estimate online for repair of a PENTAX LENS 24-70/2.8 ED SDM WR , $389. I agreed and sent in the lens.
They wrote me to say that now they want $200 more than that or they want $45 to send it back to me unrepaired.

Their terms and conditions say they can re-estimate the job, but that returns unrepaired cost $18.50.

Should I spend the $600 to repair ? , Demand they return it for $18.50, or pay the $45?

Frustrated,
Teddy

Terms and Conditions:
...
Repairs that are found to have physical damage or require major parts may be re-estimated. If an estimate is provided, your approval is required before repairs are performed.

How is multishot super-resolution truly possible?

You are right, the K-1 pixels are about 5 microns across, so you would need a fine grain film, that can make >100 lp/mm to be comparable.

he did say that. But that part of what he said is not what I was responding to.

He said "Look at the great photographers of the past working with the available technology, high resolution was a pipe dream."
That is just plain wrong. A 35mm film camera had the same resolution as today's full frame digital camera. And people shot plenty with larger format than that.

I don't think you are right. low resolution pictures are fine for tv monitors, but fine art prints are done at high resolution.

As for photographers of the past, an 8x10 inch view camera, shooting at f40 gives a 25 micron resolution for 8,000 by 10,000 spots- 80 megapixels.

As a kid, I worked for a pro shooting 8x36 inch film in a panaram camera. At f16 we had a gigapixel.
