exposure and focus

Earlier today I watched a Youtube video where this guy, there are many such videos, was expressing the best way to get sharp photos was through shutter speed and focus. I understand focus but the other? I remember when I was shooting 35mm Plus-x, ASA 125 and my landscape exposures being like 1/125 and f5.6. That just seems as best I recall a rather regular setting. Now with ISO's through the roof and outrageous shutter speeds I wonder if I were to stay with ISO 100 and just go with a 1/125 and f5.6 and perhaps "manual focus" am I going to be approaching that wonderful "Ansel Adams" sharpness and contrast and clarity? A lady I am seeing showed me some photographs her father had shot, he was a professional, photographer and the framing, glass and sealed back showed the professionalism and the quality and subjects were Anselesque. Is it possible to approach the quality of true film darkroom work with digital?

I sold my k-r for the same reason, poor focus and color, and got my k-5 and was out shooting with it today at 110 degrees and it just fired away. Left my k-3 at home napping on my bed......................

Ok guys here is the scoop. It is 110 degrees today and I just got back from Walmart. I took my trusty K-5 along for the ride and got a few cloud pics and then parked in the sunbaked parking lot at Walmart. I grabbed little old k-5 and went into the "air-conditioned" Walmart and place k-5 in cart so he was comfortable. We did our shopping, slowly because it was air-conditioned. Proceeded thru checkout and into the parking lot and my awaiting Bravada. We drove home and upon arriving I immediately placed my pampered pet k-5 on the bed to relax. He enjoyed the safe and comfy/cool trip.

This is a photograph of Montezuma castle in camp Verde, Arizona. It was taken June 11, 2021 at approx. 1:00 PM under clear skies. These ruins were abandoned by the Anasazi Indians around 1400 AD. Nobody knows where they went or why they disappeared but the structure is built in the same method and style as Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon and Betatikin ruins in New Mexico. This is only 20 miles from where I live but architecturally it is wonderful......................Dougie

With regard to ice and condensation I have already ruled out "ice". the freezer packs would be my choice but you think simply using a cooler is sufficient? What is a "pelican cooler"?

---------- Post added 06-15-21 at 12:43 PM ----------

Oh yes and in terms of leaving children or pets in a car in the heat the thought abhors me. My daughter is 46 years old and I think she has it figured out...............

Today is another lovely day in Clarkdale, Arizona. Balmy temperature today will be 111 degrees. I was going to go out on a shooting tour but am somewhat reluctant due to having my cameras ina "very hot" vehicle and what damage might occur to the innards.. I read somewhere that if they are in off position they can take a higher temp but what is that higher temp? We all know the interior of a vehicle with the windows rolled up is hotter than the temp outside so other than carrying a cooler with ice packs in it and loading my cameras into the cooler does anybody know the upper temp where my cameras are safe..............Doug

I have just been trying bleach bypass and wow. I just ran the contrast all the way to the right and the sharpness all the way to the right and I am getting some stunning results. The colors seem to be more to my liking and are a bit more real than say bright or natural or landscape and such. I am really having fun.............Douglas

Thanks for the info BB. I must say living here in Arizona there is not a problem finding heat. My solution is quite easy I use either store bought freezer bags or water bottles frozen in the freezer and place them in a cooler with my cameras. My cameras sit on a towel for protection and the bottle sits in a corner so any condensation is absorbed under the towel and since my k-3 and k-5 are weather sealed I am not overly worried about the moisture factor. It is not going to freeze in the cooler anyway just stay cool and out of the heat........

Maybe I will try a different sd card or perhaps load the .bin file onto both sd cards or another thought was to plug the USB cord into my computer to get another look........

As far as I know by having used different settings my menu button is working ok.......

Yes that is exactly the file name and so it still comes back to the camera not pulling up a display. It would not pull up a display of the firmware even before I had the file on a newly formatted sd card. What would cause the camera to regularly go right too the info screen when I am holding down "menu" while I turn on the camera?

This was shot at my ex-brother-in-laws horse-riding concession at Deadhorse State Park in Cottonwood, Arizona. I also toured around and got some shots of people fishing in the lakes and some ducks and trees and stuff. I bought the lens on eBay for $20.00 and it does not and has not disappointed. I have not touched the photo with either PS or Lightroom. It is straight out of the camera. Nice day..................Douglas

Yes it is in the root because I formatted the Sd card and the "extracted" .bin file is the only thing on the card. Yes it is in the first slot. My K-5 works great when I turn on the camera with the menu button held down I get the firmware version info. The problem is the firmware info does not come up on my k-3 all it does is go directly to the info page............

I am having a problem. I want to upgrade my k-3 firmware from version 1.1 to 1.42 and have downloaded the zip file. I installed a fully charged battery, formatted my SD card and loaded the firmware bin file, held the menu button while I turned on my camera and got "nothing". No listing of the firmware version or option to load. All I got was the "info" screen. Under firmware/option I get the firmware version but that was it. No options. Anybody got any ideas...................D

Actually I think I prefer my k-5 over my k-3. I have used the same lenses on both cameras and the results from the k-5 are superioer to the k-3. Maybe I got a k-3 lemon. Hard to say but my k-5 is getting much use.

Maybe somebody could help me with an issue. I right now have version 1.1 firmware in my l-3 and want to upgrade. I downloaded the latest version, fully charged my battery, formatted my SD card, put the card in the camera, held the menu button down while turning on the camera and all I am getting is my info screen. Under firmware/options all it does is tell me the version and not options. What is going on? Help.....

Ok here is my submittal to the contest. I have done absolutely nothing to the photograph. I have PS and Lightroom but this pic has not seen either. It is straight from the machine. this was shot at my ex-brother-in-laws horseback trail riding concession at Deadhorse State Park in Cottonwood, Arizona. I used my Pentax k-5 with SMC Pentax 28mm-90mm f3.5-6.3, and the exposure is f11.0 at 1/1500, ISO 800 and 45mm on the lens. I will work on it later but for this contest I am doing a purist thing and this is the photo as shot.

After reading all the responses regarding the k-5 i am in complete agreement and I believe I stated so in my original thread. My experience had been similar in other words I have both the k-5 16mp and a k-3 24mp and the quality is not really what I would call overly noticeable. I agree about the kr as I have that as well and a kx and an ist dl. Years ago when I bought my ist dl I also had a Nikon d40x 10mp. The clarity and sharpness of the d40x was good but I did not care for the Nikon colors. They seemed washed-out and faded as per my ist dl which were vibrant and to me accurate and real.......................D
