K5 V1.16 (if not mistaken)
Except for af area test, the AF test menu also has an entry for af area number; I can elect numbers from 0 to 10. What are they? They might match the 11 points that one can select; can somebody confirm?

I checked on my K3 hoping to see 27 area numbers but it also only has 0 to 10, so it does not answer your question.

Trying to learn how to use the K-3’s Focus Tracking for BIF, I practised on cars using the following settings.

SETUP AS USER 3
EXPOSURE MODE - TAv
SHUTTER SPEED - 1000s
f STOP - F4
AUTO ISO RANGE - 100-6400
SHAKE REDUCTION - OFF
CONTINUOUS SHOOTING - MEDIUM
FOCUS AREA – SELECT CENTRE SPOT 9 POINT(PINK)
16-3 FIRST FRAME = FOCUS PRIORITY

18-4 HOLD AF STATUS - OFF

You can see the results here.

Has anyone run a similar test and what were your findings.

I've spent some time learning how to use the K-3's focus tracking. Now to try my hand at BIF. You can see the results on Flikr and I would appreciate any advise.

Thanks, my K5 and the 7 pin Jessop ext tubes behave exactly the same.

I'm now thinking of grounding the 7th pin permanently, do you foresee any problems.

I have now fixed my Jessops Ext Tubes, The first one I did the long way round by dismantling it completely and sanding away all the anodising on the mating surfaces, never again. The other two were done as per the photos posted here. Everything works perfectly now.

How Jessops ever sold this item I don't know.

BTW my tubes have seven electrical contacts, I've seen Jessop Tubes with six contacts

The Jessops tubes do not have the Richo pin to act as an earth path. None of my FA lenses work in Av mode.

Anyway I've stripped the first tube ready to sand off all the annodising tomorrow morning.

I have a Sigma 50-500 and a set of Jessops extension rings with the seven electrical contacts. Reading all the above comments I tried them out with the Sigma and with the K5 set to Av mode there was no F stop reading as I expected.
I then ran a wire from the chrome lens base plate to the chrome camera lens mount and the F stop reading worked perfectly.
If you examine the electrical continuity of the Jessop extension tubes you will see that there is no electrical path between the base of the lens and the camera body. I’m not talking the pin path here but more like an earth.
Could someone please check this out and debunk or confirm my understanding.

Focus Screen Ec-B for Pentax K5-1 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I fitted this screen for exactly the same reason and it works very well. You MUST check and adjust the shim if necessary. The green hex light confirmation is the least accurate method of getting focus confirmation and it is not linked to or dependant on either the split focus screen nor the contrast or live view focus.

There are many posts and articles which will help you get a good understanding of the focus systems.

Have fun.

His statement that the centre screw over tightens it's self makes sense, if you read this posting by "sveinmb"

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/130429-diy-sup...or-repair.html

DIY SDM repair v1.0

he refers to working the centre screw backwards and forwards, maybe that loosened the torque sufficiently to release unbind the motor.

DA*16-50 needed +10.
DA*60-250 needed +5.
DA18-55 +4.
50-500 was still back focusing at +10, I guess it needs about another +5.
FA100 2.8 macro was -1.

Once I've got the Phase AF correct and in agreement with the Contrast focus I can fit my Canon Ec-b split focus screen and calibrate that.

Thanks, that's what I thought and that's why I was interested in getting into the Debug mode to try and add a bit more + adjustment. Maybe I should play with the three AF module screws on the bottom of the camera :<(((((

Hi, Thanks for the feed back, I've been trying to set the AF fine adjustment on all my AF lenses and found that the +10 "Apply all" and the +10 "this lens only" was not quite enough to fix the BF on my Sigma 50-500. So before taking it in I wanted to play with what I hoped was the base setting for the phase detect AF system. I must admit that I'm also a bit confused as to weather or not the two adjustments "Apply All" and "Apply this Lens" are cumulative. The other reason for trying Debug is because it's there :<)) I have used it on my K200D

Using a slide duplicator...

I have added two images to the above link, same negative and camera settings but taken from the glossy and emulsion side of the negative. I can't see a difference. The pics were converted directly from RAW with no PP or sharpening at all so they could be improved.

I'm going to make a change to the set-up because having the slide holder fixed to the rack means that every time you change a setting, say magnification, it changes the distance between the slide and the lens. I'm going to make a bracket which fixes the slide holder directly to wooden base to eliminate the interaction.

M and A lenses exposure accuracy

Thanks Mark,

One of the things I like about the M lens is that I can lock the aperture to the depth of field or sweet spot I want on the lens without worrying whether or not I've inadvertently turned the wrong knob/button and changed the setting.

And the price is more reasonable. :<).

Now I must find a 200mm and 300mm, I'm thinking of getting them from Henry's, may be a bit more expensive but less chancy than an eBay purchase.

Focus Screen thickness ??

Some feed back.

I've now made two additional focus screens, i.e. I now have four screens.

Original K200D:- Thickness 1.33mm all over.
Jinfinance diagonal:- 1.11mm on the flats and 1.20mm on the split centre lens.
Pentax ME Super horizontal:- 1.19mm on the flats and 1.36 on the split centre lens.
Unknown K mount body, micro prism only:- 0.99mm all over. This is the brightest of all the screens.

All of these screens focus perfectly using the same shim, therefore I have not found that thickness affects the focusing, it's the shim thickness, which I had to adjust for the first split screen, which is important.

Shoot me down :<)

M and A lenses exposure accuracy

Thanks, I guess I'll have to live with the exposure variation, what I do at the moment is take a quick shot of the scene and check the histogram. Why I asked the question is because most of my lenses are M series and I'm going to buy a 200mm and 300mm to complete the line-up. I think I will stick to the M's so that my pre shot mental check-list is the same for all my lenses.

I had forgotten that you can set the aperture of an A lens in the camera under Av mode, never use it.

Thanks for all the help.

Whilst waiting for replies I've just cut down a ME Super screen and it works like a charm.

Thanks,
A more educated Greg
