The 15mm Limited controls my mind - club

I'd be interested to know if anyone else thinks the same as I do . I got the 15mm few weeks ago and think its fantastic for taking crisp, well saturated , almost 3-d like pictures of cityscapes -close ups of bridges, buildings and so on, it makes taking these almost effortless. I'm not so keen on it for landscapes though. Here are some cityscapes taken down by the River Clyde in Glasgow

Thanks dmfw, yes I'm using a tripod.
I think what you've mentioned is the focus stacking suggested by civiletti. I'm going to give that a go.

Hello, I was just wondering , does anyone else have the same problem I have when I'm photographing a landscape with my K5. I tend to take my shots with the tripod set about a foot or so above the ground but as the viewing screen is fixed this means that there's a lot of guess work involved in composing the shot as I can't see what I'm shooting!I assume I would find it a lot easier if the screen could be adjusted . I would be interested in any one else's comments /views on this, thanks:)

Thanks civiletti, I googled stacking as I hadn't even heard of it before. It sounds quite complicated but I'll maybe have a go when I have the time to try it out properly. Appreciate the advice:)

I understand what you mean Jon, I suppose it then depends on how much room there is for manoeuvre. And thanks very much for the illustrated explanation of using manual lens for setting hyperfocal distance .

I take on board too Jim what you say about the wider lens giving the impression of greater depth from back to front.

It really comes down to what you say John, I need to go out and see what works for me and what doesn't. I do have the kit lens and funnily enough 2 of my favourite landscape shots were taken with this . Somehow though I got it in to my head that because its a kit lens I must be able to do better with the 50-135 ( or say a 15mm). Maybe I should concentrate on my technique instead of spending money on "better" equipment:confused:

Do HDR photos sell?

Hello, you might want to look at a site called Photo4me -www.photo4me.com-which allows good amateur photographers as well as professionals to sell their work . There are a lot of absolutely excellent HDR shots -not of the tacky type-there . I don't think anyone on there makes a fortune but work does sell and there's a really good , supportive community spirit amongst the members. Your photographs need to be approved before they go on the commercial site but so far all of mine have been so it truly isn't hard to get on there. Its a UK based site but that doesn't matter as the site send out any items ordered , you don't have to do that yourself (not that I would mind atall if I ever was lucky enough to make a sale!)

Thanks for the quick and helpful replies everyone. Yes slip its a K-5 I have. From what you 've all said I think I've just decided to get the Pentax 15mm, I had it on hire for a few days this summer. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to take any landscape shots but the colours were great,, very rich. Thanks again:)

Hello, I'm really making an effort just now to improve my landscape photographs. I'm trying to get as much of shot in focus as possible and have been looking at articles about hyperfocal distance . Am I right in thinking that if I want as much of the foreground as possible to be sharp I really need to be using a wide angle lens and that my 50-135mm lens is probably not going to achieve this , even at 50mm? The kind of shots I'm talking about are rolling vistas and seascapes usually with mountains in the distance .Any advice would be very welcome as I really do want to up the quality of my shots, thanks:)

I have had my K5 for about 7 months now . I've noticed that it seems to be taking longer -maybe 5 seconds or longer -for the image to appear after taking a photograpgh. This is regardless of the settings and is happening even when the battery has just been charged.. Has anyone else had this problem?

Advice on prime replacements for 50-135

Thanks again everyone for your replies. One of the lenses I've decided to get is the FA77, from everything I've read it sounds like something special and what has been said in this thread seems to confirm this. Because of the price I'd like to try before I buy but unfortunately the one company I know about who hire out Pentax lenses here in the UK is waiting to receive one from Pentax and it could be a couple of months before its available. At the wider end I'm thinking about a Pentax 12-24 or the DA 15, the same company has both of these in stock so I'm going to give the DA 15 a go tomorrow and meantime I'll carry on using my 18-55 kit lens, which actually is capable of producing some pretty decent shots and my Tamron 70-300 for the longer lengths which also , despite being built like 2 toilet rolls one inside the other , has also produced some ok shots including action shots. I think because it was cheap and because of the not fantastic build quality I was expecting the 50-135 to put it in the shade but to be honest that hasn't happened , which is another reason why I'm thinking about the primes now .That's maybe a different topic though which I should start another thread for.

Advice on prime replacements for 50-135

Hello, I got my 1st DSLR , a K5, earlier this year , and a couple of months ago the 50 -135. I've decided though that its size and weight is not for me , I'd rather have 2 or 3 physically smaller prime lenses . Any advice on which ones to consider would be appreciated . Image quality is my top priorities , I've been taking mostly landscape shots but I really enjoyed the couple of sporting events -a football match and showjumping -I've taken the camera to and am keen to do more .I would also like to experiment with portraiture. The only other lenses I have are the 18-55 kit lens and a Tamron 70-300. The kit lens can actually produce some really nice shots but as I've said I'm really looking for a step up in image quality
