Is it possible to suppress the focal length request when power ON with a K/KA lens ?

On the KP...
1. One cannot suppress the focal length request.
2. A half-press of the shutter release button will take you out of the Input Focal Length page, but, as has already been pointed out, the SR ability will be compromised if the focal length selection is incorrect. (you seem to indicate, however, that this does not matter to you).
3. Turning off the SR will not make the question disappear.
4. A default focal length can be entered the Record Menu 4 page; doing so would be useful if one has just one lens for which entering the focal length is necessary.

KP or K3II

I have used a KP for a few years, now. I like it for birds and wildlife. The Pentax Forum review of the KP showed that the percentage of "keeper" images in AF tracking mode was higher in the KP than it was in the K3 (the K3 II has the same AF system as the original K3). I don't do much birds-in-flight except for larger, slower birds like herons and egrets; the KP does well for those, with proper technique, of course. For me, the only advantages of a K3-variant vs a KP would be the maximum frame rate (8.3 vs 7 fps) and the buffer, but I have not found those differences limiting me in any way.

As for ergonomics, it took me a very short time to make the transition to a camera without a top LCD. The user interface is outstanding. You may not like the feel of the large grip on the KP, but I got used to it reasonably quickly and it does not negatively impact my photography. I have and like the battery grip. You'd have to make a transition to a slightly different button layout. The single AF/AE lock button may not be to your liking if you use both on your K3; in that case you'd have to assign the AE lock function to another button.

How to expose for highlights shadows?

I agree with Titrisol. Knowing the exposure latitude of your film is critical. You need to test it by photographing a calibrated gay scale (black to white). A handheld meter will help you to get a better feel of the behavior of the in-camera meter. I'd suggest an incident meter for studio portraits. A spot meter will enable you to survey the light levels in more complicated scenes. Once you know the spot meter's exposure parameters for the highlights, then you can put those into your camera controls and adjust them to allow more exposure without blowing them out (knowing the film latitude is critical to how much you can change the camera controls).

In short, no, the KP does not have built-in film emulation for jpeg capture. It does have Custom Image settings (page 74).

KP on the way......any advice on setup

The default User mode "Manual Lens", if I remember correctly (I overwrote mine long ago), sets the camera up for use with manual lenses so that you do not have to dive into the menus to change various options and parameters. It would be a good place to start with a manual-focussing lens.

Regarding the quality of the 18-55 and the 50-200: the KP will likely show their optical limitations more than did the Kx.

You won't be disappointed with the KP. Rather, you will likely be astonished by the improved image quality and handling vis-a-vis the Kx.

KP Mirror up mode

If the mirror doesn't go up on your KP's 2-second timer, there is something wrong with your camera. To verify that the mirror goes up, all you have to do is look through the viewfinder and trip the shutter with the 2-second timer: the viewfinder's image will be blacked-out.

As a KP owner, I can confirm that the KP has a 2-second delay mirror-up option. It is the 2s option under the self-timer drive mode.

The KP Battery Grip

I've had the battery grip for about a year. I bought it for these 3 reasons, primarily: cold weather photography, extended sessions, and for live view work. It is also very useful for portrait (vertically-oriented) work. I don't have the grip permanently fixed to the KP. I do need to buy a bag that better accommodates the camera plus grip combination.

The IF (Interactive Function) button on the PZ-1 was a precursor to the DSLR green button. It shifted the time and aperture values to the program line in Hyper Manual and Hyper Program and adjusted the aperture when using flash.

When you do that test, I suggest that you also monitor the batteries' levels with Select Battery in Set-up Menu #5.

If you are curious about authoritative sources to verify the good information provided above, either download a copy of the operating manual and read page 121, or see the bottom of the specification table in the Pentax Forums' review of the KP (Pentax KP Review - Specifications | PentaxForums.com Reviews).

Does the Pentax KP have an electronic shutter for "normal" exposure lengths?

Electronic shutter speeds are 1/24000 to 30 seconds. If you use it with the viewfinder, you get a double click sound. In live view, you'll get the initial sound of the mirror and mechanical shutter opening, then a very quiet sound as the electronic shutter is activated and again after the exposure. You'll need the accessory battery grip if you want to use live view for more than a short period.

KP settings for portraiture

I'd use Auto white balance, Portrait custom image mode, and Skin Tone Type 2. If they have patience, you could change Skin Tone to Type 1. You could try the various settings and lighting situations ahead of time using your wife as a model.

Choosing a proper SanDisk SD Card for the KP
Posted By Ausable

According to the Pentax Forums review of the KP:
"Our framerate test was conduced with a U3-rated Sandisk Extreme Pro SD card (95Mb/s read and 90Mb/s write). This card delivers optimal performance with the KP, as it delivers the fastest speed that the UHS-I standard supports. The KP does not support faster speeds offered by the newer UHS-II bus, but can of course be used with such cards since they are backwards-compatible.
"We measured the actual average write speed of the KP to be around 27 Mb/s. This is somewhat slower than what we found with the K-3 II, but around the same speed as the K-1."

Basic Photo Software

ON1 Photo Raw provides editing tools (sliders for exposure, shadows, highlights, sharpening, etc, etc) in its Develop tab/module. You can apply local filters in its Local tab/module. You can play around with preprogrammed filters and adjustments in its Effects tab/module if you get adventurous or curious. The edits are applied non-destructively to RAW files. Cropping is done in the Develop tab/module.

I switched this year from Lightroom to ON1 to avoid the subscription model. The program works well for me. Whatever you choose, be sure that you have more computer resources than are recommended by the particular program to ensure that it works smoothly.

$90 for the Analogix SP6001 is a rather insane price. It was nowhere near that price 3 years ago. I hope your alternate item works well.

See page 85 of the KP user manual. You'll need a SlimPort to HDMI adaptor like the Analogix SP6001. That is the adaptor I purchased.

You might want to edit your original post. The quoted sentence conflates distance scales and depth-of-field scales. They are not the same thing.
