The clarity function is an algorithm that is able to determine areas where local contrast enhancement would improve the image.

In other words, it should improve perceived sharpness.

Pentax Q2 - Rumour with picture

Indeed the product highlights do not make the Q-S1 any different from the Q-7.

However the list confirms the sensor size is the same and that the body has SR.

Nonetheless the Q-S1 could have an improved sensor and image processing engine. Maybe the diffraction correction feature has been implemented in this body.

Help with K-01 problem: Dies every time I try to take a pic!

I have experienced the same problem. Wouldn't a problem with the battery be out-ruled by the fact that the problem does not occur while shooting video?

On another thread someone reported the same problem was solved after some repair related to the shutter.

K-01 is shutting itself down.

But the batteries weren't discharged. Since they were fully charged just before the camera locked up, after only a couple of shutter actuations.

As I wrote, it seems the camera employs some sort of electrical security measure and shuts the battery down, via an internal switch. The switch seems to be reset after a few seconds in the charger.

The problem with my K-01 seems to be shutter related. I noticed uneven exposures, as if the shutter curtain was delayed over a part of the image. Doing exposure bracketing made this behavior more obvious. If I recall correctly someone else's K-01 had the shutter mechanism replaced to correct this same problem (camera lock ups).

Unlike the majority of the photo industry, Ricoh has a history of providing firmware updates to older camera models, notably to their GR digital line (and these are compact cameras with non-interchangeable lenses).

Is the K01 Fussy about Batteries?

Thank you for your thoughts on the matter.

I normally don't leave the charger plugged in. But I have done so recently. Although I'm not sure that's when the problem arised.

Nevertheless I'll check the state of the charger.

Also, I normally have:
  1. A battery in the camera;

  2. A fully charged one in the bag; and

  3. A fully charged one at home.

And I cycle those three batteries in that same order. When camera's battery is depleted, I use the one in the bag, the one at home goes into the bag and I charge the depleted one as soon as possible (and the it stays at home).

Maybe that isn't the best way to do it?

Any thoughts?

Maybe my problems with the K-01 are related to what has been discussed here.

What is the voltage output of your batteris when fully charged?

K-01 is shutting itself down.

My K-01 has been shutting down unexpectedly when I trip the shutter.
It doesn't happen when filming or in playback mode.
It has happened with three Pentax batteries. One came with the camera (Amazon) and the other two I bought from B&H.
After the camera shuts down, the battery's voltage is 1.7v or 3.5v (can't recall the exact values).

However, after a few seconds in the charger, the battery's voltage output is reset. Maybe some sort of switch is in action here.

But then I measured the battery's output after being charged and it was 8.34v. Is this normal? The batteries are labled 7.2v.

I see the AC adapter for the K-01 outputs 8.3v (I don't have it) and the camera itself is labeled 8.3v. The battery charger outputs 8.3v or 8.4v.

Does anyone have a clue on what may be going on here?

Did anyone have this problem solved?

I've also downgraded from firmware 1.03 to 1.02 and back, to no avail.

Focus Peaking Tips

When I set my K-01 to manual focus mode and press the OK button to zoom in for focusing, the camera opens the lens up to maximum aperture so that manual focusing with focus peaking is done at the widest aperture.

The camera also opens the lens up to the widest aperture while autofocusing.

Mike Johnston "was talking more about "character" and what you might call a "house look" when [he] concocted that little list" [source].

It certainly isn't about recent releases. In fact recency doesn't matter at all. Specially since Pentax has available a range of lenses which have that purported "house look" and "character".

Since Mike has tested so many lenses over time, and knowing his tastes and views on photography (the art and the gear), I'm inclined to trust his opinion for I have used only seven Pentax lenses (three kit zooms and 4 limiteds) and nothing else.

I do recommend reading his blog though.

I'd even recommend going back to the first posts on blogspot and going through all of it. There are so many treasures there.

He also had a column on The Luminous Landscape and wrote articles on Photo.net.

The full name of the lens is "HD PENTAX-D FA645 MACRO 90MmF2.8ED AW SR".

And there are some photos made with it here:

How about the DFA 90mm Macro?

I've read some nice comments about that one, and seen some quite nice web JPEGs.

Price Hike & Limited Lenses

I own the DA 21mm, DA 35mm macro and the FA 43mm.

I've also used the DA 40mm XS.

If I were to have only one lens it'd be the FA 31mm, because of its aperture and field of view (40mm and 43mm are too narrow for a single lens combo).

However I think the K-01 balances better with smaller lenses. In that regard the DA 21mm is my best lens for my K-01. But it has a f/3.2 maximum aperture. Although its field of view is rather useful.

A compact 24mm f/2 lens is the missing perfect kit lens for the K-01. To keep the size down, it could recede into the mirror box.

By the way, I think the K-01 is a camera without a suitable kit lens (prime, wide, small and fast) much like the K10D was, when it should have been accompanied by a Weather Resistant kit lens from day 1.

In the latest interview with a Pentax official (was it in China?) he said the K-01 was selling quite well.

I.e. someone did buy them.

But I was actually interested in knowing if non-camera enthusiasts hadn't bought them. For that's what you asserted:

On another note, the press the K-01 received in design oriented media (the ones I read, all of them) was quite positive. The press received on photo-gear oriented media (and the forums) was quite critical both of the design and the ergonomics.

I have been enjoying mine alot, both as a tool to make photos and as an object :-) So much that my K10D hasn't seen much use. Although I can understand the advantages of the K10D's form factor.

The K-01 can save cross processing settings from its own JPEG files.

Maybe it can from the Q's JPEGs.
