I've got some great shots with the (old) 55-300 on the K1, but you do have to crop a little. I actually like to use it in 1:1 mode, where it's perfect.

Don't discount the DFA 28-105 for travel. Not as fast (or wide) as the 24-70, but much easier to pack and excellent optically and in handling.

It looks OK, nothing special. It's probably intended as the lens that everyone will buy to go with the camera. I'm sure it will sell well.

Yesterday, Airbus announced the discontinuation of their A380 Superjumbo, with final deliveries in 2021. Although a brilliant airplane, it has been outcompeted by smaller more nimble 2-engine planes, from the economic viewpoint of the airlines.

As I walk around lugging my Pentax K1, with some subset of the enormous DFA* 70-200, DFA 150-450, DFA 15-30, and DFA* 50 lenses – glorious, beautiful, sensuous lenses – I cannot help but wonder whether a similar watershed has been reached in the camera market. Would I rather be flying on the magnificent 4-engine A380 or a much smaller 2-engine plane? I want the A380. But am I willing to endure less frequent services and higher prices for that privilege? Probably not. Would I rather have an optical viewfinder or an electronic viewfinder? At this stage, optical. But how much extra weight am I willing to carry, and how much longer am I willing to wait for innovations?

Does Ricoh/Pentax even think about these things? Or do they see themselves carving out the dinosaur-niche in the market?

P.S. I will continue to fly on the A380 and shoot Pentax. Just grizzling.

Interesting idea. I'd never heard of those lens loops before. The Lens Support Adapter doesn't look very practical to me though. Besides, with a big lens, I would rather not carry it supported from the neck. I much prefer a sling strap attached to the tripod foot on my 70-200 or 150-450.

Melbourne Pentaxians: where/what to shoot?

Having lived in Melbourne most of my life, I am struggling to come up with ideas of photogenic places and events to shoot in and around the city and central Victoria. Most of my 'good ideas' I've done several times. So I'm wondering what ideas others from the region might have. Just a short list from people may give inspiration to others.

To start the ball rolling, here are some off the top of my head.

Laneways and arcades of Melbourne; Southbank; Docklands; Queen Vic Market; Williamstown; St Kilda Pier and St Kilda Festival (just finished); Moomba; Botanic Gardens; Melbourne Observatory; Shrine of Remembrance; Exhibition Buildings; Streets of Carlton, Richmond, Collingwood, Sth Melbourne, etc.; Maling Road Auto Classico (August); Royal Show.

Further afield: Geelong foreshore; Ballarat; Bendigo; Castlemaine; Point Nepean; Lakes Entrance; Wilson's Prom; Great Ocean Road; Werribee Gorge; Cape Schanck; Apollo Bay.

What has worked for you?

It is a strangely pretty lens, in a retro kind of way.

I'm all set at 35mm though.

It says 20 sec for me on a mac pro, but hangs at about 80% done. No further progress after 5 minutes.

UPDATE: Ha, it's done. A new enhanced version is there. It's not black. Perhaps jatrax's black image was just a placeholder before the file had been written; it takes way longer than advertised.

Damned if I can see any enhancements! The file was enlarged from 50 MB to 177.5 MB though.

Combining Godox X wireless and P-TTL

Yes, confusing. They seem to use the master/slave terminology for wireless. That still leaves me unsure of the role played by P-TTL in the setup. Oh well, it's not what I was hoping.

From the B&H overview:

Users can also use it as an optical slave in addition to use as a radio TTL master/slave unit.
  • An integrated 2.4 GHz X radio system is incorporated into the TT350P for wireless triggering. Able to be set up as a master or slave, this flash will help you create a versatile lighting setup with a range of 328' and support for 16 channels and three groups. It can also work with an optional X series transmitter for creating more elaborate setups.

  • Being compatible with Pentax's TTL system, users will enjoy numerous automated flash settings and the ability to use functions such as high-speed sync.

  • Optical slave mode is available for working with other standard flashes.

Combining Godox X wireless and P-TTL

I'm a little confused about the Godox system. At the moment I have a Pentax AF360FGZII and Metz 52 AF-1, which are both P-TTL and HSS capable.

My understanding is that the Godox TT350P is their only P-TTL flash, that it can act as both optical master and slave, and that it is also HSS capable. So, if I placed a Godox XProP TTL wireless controller on my K1 hotshoe, it could trigger the TT350P wirelessly, and those in turn could trigger the Pentax and the Metz optically with full P-TTL compatibility. Is that correct?

Other "no-system" Godox flashes, like the TT600, could be triggered wirelessly by the XProP TTL, but could not P-TTL trigger the Pentax and Metz I presume?

Or am I completely off-base?

So what white balance do you have set on your camera? I could imagine that, if it was set to auto, the results would be very inconsistent.

K1 users: what lenses do you use?

I overlap a lot with Sandy,

The new Pentax FF lenses are all great. The DFA 28-105 is a near-ideal walk around zoom, quite light and compact. OK, it would be nice to have 24 some times, but not at the expense of the added weight of the DFA 24-70, which I don't have or covet.

The DFA* 70-200 is a revelation. Beautifully sharp and clean (but heavy). The DFA 15-30 is not quite in the same league, but is really very good for a fast ultra-wide zoom, ideal for architecture and interiors. The DFA 150-450 is just wonderfull, and easily hand-holdable, used mostly for wildlife.

The FDA* 50 f/1.4 is from a different planet. It is astonishingly sharp. It's a little prone to CA wide open, but that's easily fixed in post-processing.

The Tamron 90mm macro, is a little old fashioned in its handling, but very solid optically. Very content with it. The Sigma 35mm Art is top-class.

I also shoot with three supposedly crop lenses on the K1: the DA40 Limited, DA70 Limited, and DA 10-17 fisheye. The Limiteds are just about FF (especially the 70), and the fisheye is FF over 14-17.

That's way too much glass, and of course I can only carry a small subset for each outing, but it does everything I want. The only future release I am looking forward to is a fully functional 1.4x Pentax teleconverter for the 150-450, if the quality is good enough.

I was out yesterday shooting the St Kilda Festival in mostly bright sunlight. I took four lenses for the day: 70-200 (mostly for shooting performers on stage), 50, 28-105, 10-17 (drama). It was a perfect combination for the purpose.

A DA 55-300 WR or PLM would be a good match for the Sigma 17-50.

The Tokina 10-17 is exactly the same lens, and comes in versions with and without the hood.

I use my Pentax 10-17 on the K1. There is no vignetting from 14mm upward. The full circular fisheye effect would be nice, but I'm not brave enough.

Sandy, do you really have the strap attached to the camera when using the DFA 150-450? I am amazed. Isn't that a lot of strain on the mount?

I use my 70-200 and 150-450 almost exclusively hand-held. Just not possible without a sling strap for any length of time.

Pentax flashes versus 3rd party

The Metz 52 AF-1 is a good, though not cheap, fully featured option. It also has user applicable firmware updates, which is nice.

Have you looked at Godox, which has P-TTL now, as well as wireless support if you need it? From B&H at $85:

With full support for Pentax TTL, including high-speed sync, and a built-in 2.4GHz radio system, the compact Godox TT350P Mini Thinklite TTL Flash is an excellent everyday companion for your camera. With a lightweight design and guide number of 118' at ISO 100 and 105mm, the TT350P is useful for both on-camera and off-camera operation. Users can also use it as an optical slave in addition to use as a radio TTL master/slave unit. It is versatile as well with the ability to tilt from -7 to 90 and rotate 270.
