Any tips for photographing air show?

Very nice shots. I wish the airshows that do occur near me had greater variety and more vintage style aircraft. While I got some great shots and had a good time, the airshow this past weekend did not have much variety - either in the static displays or the demos. Maybe this was an affect of the pandemic, but I recall a little more variety in past airshows at Pease.

Thanks for the advice all. It came in handy. The weather was perfect - initially clear blue skies, but some high clouds came in later to add a little interest to the backgrounds. As predicted the sun position was not ideal, but I still got a large number of great shots. I took over 1,100 photos and after an initial culling, I still have nearly 800 to go through. I would say that the hit rate on focus was better than 80%. Exposure a little less, but all correctable in ACDSee. I will post some photos to the Aviation section once I get through the processing/final culling. All in all, I'm very pleased with the performance of the camera and the 55-300mm PLM lens.

I shot entirely in TAV mode with Aperture set to F/11 and exposure set to different values depending on the type of aircraft was in the air at the time. I found 1/250 good for prop blur, but not fast enough to get the aircraft sharp. I found a good compromise around 1/400 -1/500 second. For the Thunderbirds I used 1/1000 sec. I varied the exposure bias from +1 EV to 1-2/3 EV.

OK. Here's one photo as a teaser.

Thanks for all the advice. The weather is supposed to be perfect (75F and clear). Unfortunately, the way the airport is oriented, the sun will be behind the planes in the afternoon. I do prefer the blurry propellers myself, so will try to keep my exposure times at 1/250 or so for the prop planes. I do have 2 memory cards and 3 batteries, so should be all set. I did use TAV for a recent visit to the zoo and that worked out well, so will most likely do the same here.

Any advice on AF settings? Should I use the full 11-point, center weighted 5-point or spot?

I'll be going to the "Thunder over New England" airshow tomorrow. I'll be bringing my K-70 along with the HD DA 16-85mm and the HD DA 55-300mm PLM lenses.

I do have experience with using a Panasonic Lumix FX300 bridge camera at previous airshows, but notice that focus is more fiddly with the K-70, so I'm especially looking for tips on focusing or pre-focusing for capturing sharp images of the aircraft during their air demos. Any other advice is welcome such as recommended exposure bias etc. when pointed up at the sky. I do RAW development so can recover blown highlights or shadows somewhat.

Thanks.

Kenneth7379, I agree you should try taking a photo outside to see if that one looks normal. If it's still green, then you should probably try doing a factory reset. Here's a link to a thread you started in 2018 asking how to do that:

Is there a way to return to default settings - Optio RS1000? - PentaxForums.com

If pictures taken after the reset are still green, then I would say there is something wrong with the camera.

For me, instances of the seller trying to close the deal off ebay/paypal is a big red flag and I would absolutely avoid this seller as that is an indication he's not the most honest seller out there.

I've been looking at purchasing this one from ASUS. It's pretty reasonably priced for their claimed color gamut capability:

ProArt Display PA248QV?Monitors?ASUS USA

Seems good enough for me as a hobbyist photographer. They have a 27" version as well.

I think Mother Nature is already trying to reduce the invasive species known as "human", and in recent months appears to be stepping up the effort...

The problem is that it it is a fungal infection. Fungus release spores into the air. You or your equipment don't need to come in contact with anything other than the cave environment itself to possibly become contaminated with these spores. I think the underwater camera housing is a good idea, but it still doesn't meet the letter of the new policies. I'm not sure what a fully compliant solution would be unless you could find some sort of disposable bags to cover your equipment.

Agreed. To be clear - it does not add an AF function to non-AF lenses. It just passes all the signals/linkages between the camera body and an AF lens, up to and including KAF4.

Look at the review links I provided in in my listing. It has the mechanical AF motor drive linkage as well as the KAF4 electrical terminals so It provides full autofocus and auto-aperture functions for lenses up to and including the 55-300mm PLM. Note that this is not the DG version which may have improved anti-reflective coatings.

Adapting older wired remote shutter release to newer cameras - KP and K-70

For those that own the KP and K-70, finding a 3rd party remote shutter release is a little more difficult since Pentax changed the plug format for these cameras. Earlier Pentax DSLRs use a 3 conductor 2.5mm TRS (tip/ring/sleeve) plug. The KP and K-70 use a 4 conductor 3.25mm TRRS (tip/ring/ring/sleeve) plug.

I discovered this the hard way when I ordered the Pixel RC-201 E3 shutter release cable, thinking it would work with my K-70. Being an electrical engineer and tinkerer, I decided to physically replace the cable/connector on the Pixel remote with a cable that has the proper size and configuration connector. I purchased an inexpensive pre-made cable from Amazon that has the proper connector on one end and bare leads on the other.

After some careful experimentation I was able to determine that the sleeve is ground (or Common), the first ring closest to the sleeve also needs to be connected to Common, the second ring is connected to the focus contact and the tip is connected to the shutter release contact. Putting it all together this works exactly the way it is supposed to and looks like the remote was manufactured this way to begin with.

But for those that aren't tinkerers, this can be accomplished by using a simple 2.5mm female to 3.5mm male adapter like the one shown below. I hope this is helpful to someone.

P.S. If anyone is interested, I can expand on my modification description with more details and even some diagrams and pictures. Just let me know.
