A6000 or E-M10 to replace GR?

I've never had it overheat. But I don't do much CPU intensive stuff on it like video, gaming, nor hotspotting.

The warmest I've felt it get is after a while shooting 4K video, but it has never cut out from overheating or anything. But I can certainly understand how it might potentially get real hot if you push it. Not a lot of heat dissipation possible in such a small, dense, sealed body.

Sony seems to have a lot of problems with heat and 4K video, not just in phones. A6300 and A6500 in particular have a lot of people complaining about it.

A6000 or E-M10 to replace GR?

Some Sony mobile phones do a similar thing. Un-announced. Shortly after I bought my Z5 mobile a few years ago, and had taken a few photos with it, I got a message from the phone telling me a 'Highlights Movie' movie was ready for me to play. WTF?, I thought. And there it was - a HD movie contructed from my recent photos, with a sound track, music, titling, fading, and even concluding with a link to post it to Facebook. It looked pretty good too. I have let the phone continue to do this automatically now. It's very interesting to watch a visual story being crafted out of images that are usually totally banal throwaways.

The Xperia™ Movie Creator automatically creates short videos using existing photos and videos. The application automatically determines the timeline to create its movie. For example, it can take a selection of photos and videos from a Saturday afternoon outing or from a weekly, monthly, even a yearly period and create a movie for you. When this highlight-style movie is ready, you get notified.

And here's where it gets creepy:

If you log in to a Facebook account, you can create Highlight Movies from your Facebook events, featuring photos from the event, friends’ names, and more.
Movie Creator ? Sony Xperia Z5 support (English)

Sony and Olympus must be sharing some of this software.

Off topic, sorry.

Not by much - A6000 is 310/360 (EVF vs LCD), GX-85 is ~ 290, G-7 is ~ 360.

All poor by most DSLR standards, of course.

MIke Johnson Says About K-1

Something of a fake controversy here.

As Mr Johnson must know, for most users, all you may ever need for the K-1 could be very well taken care of by the core Pentax f2.8 'Trinity'(15-30, 24-70, 70-200) lenses, or similar, and maybe one or two specialised lenses like a macro lens or a fast 50mm. Everything else will just be icing on the cake. Same story in Nikon, Canon, Sony, or Fuji land.

Aside from the clunky Sony menus, A6000's biggest annoyances are the poor low-light AF (only does 0-20 EV, which is pretty poor by Pentax or Panasonic M4/3 standards), the poor battery life, the limited degree of flip in the flippy screen, the proprietary Sony Multi-Interface Shoe (which limits your accessories), and the lack of either a mic socket or headphone socket on the camera. In hand, however, it works very well. Grip is good, dials and controls are easy to access, EVF is OK.

However I have never been able to take a liking to the 'personality' and feel of the A6000, unlike the other NEX I've owned. (NEX-5, NEX-F3, A5000, A6000). Hence I rarely take the A6000 out with me.

The G7 may also be a good Panasonic M4/3 option. Cheaper too.

645Z users would probably disagree. :) One of the selling points of the 645Z is it's utility for image archiving. Pentax even make a specialized 645Z IR version just for museums, libraries etc.

But K-1 with pixel-shift brings it's output into 645Z territory, I think.

D-FA 24-70 Repair Video

The worst part about this video for me was watching the way the repairer was dumping all those tiny screws all around the place.

He should get a small flat tray tray, with dividers, for his work surface to hold all those screws and keep everything in order.

A 7 inch field monitor. I always wanted one for video and macro. This Lilliput A7s is very well featured for the price (AUD$180):

My first [learner model] electronic gimbal (Zhiyun Smooth Q). It's designed for smart-phone video stabilization, and it does a good job at that, but I also hope to figure out a way to make it stabilize my RX-100:

But no 645 (or 6x7!) to K-mount speed-booster exists AFAIK.

Way too niche, I suspect, even for anyone in Shenzhen to take an interest.

Theoretically, they are for lenses more than bodies. But yeah, most seem to be for [APS-C] E-mount, M 4/3 etc mirrorless bodies. But I think I have seen some for FF>APS-C non-mirrorless mounts somewhere.

I have yet to see a Speed Booster/ Lens Turbo to take 645 medium format lenses down to FF or smaller though. That would be fun.

Focal reducers or 'lens speed boosters' are probably the only thing that might boost the light gathering ability of K-1 camera/ lens pair.

Other than that, you are stuck with how efficiently the camera sensor hardware can translate photons hitting the sensor into electrical signals. Some cameras may not do this as efficiently as others. For example, cameras like the Sony A77 II use a fixed translucent mirror in front of the imaging sensor to constantly feed/bounce a proportion of the incoming light to an AF sensor, which thus directly reduces the amount of light reaching the imaging sensor. Other cameras may also add optical filters in front of the imaging sensor (eg anti-aliasing filters, or even IR), which may sometimes cause the sensor to be marginally less light sensitive. K-1 does not have any of this stuff in front of it's imaging sensor.

Would a continuous LED lighting solution be worth considering, rather than a flash?

Some of those, like Aputure's Amaran products, sell themselves as offering very good colour accuracy. The AL-H100 seems a compact example that you could run as a continuous light source and/or ring flash.

What are the DNS settings your PC is depending on?

Set your ADSL router to use Google's public DNS servers, instead of TPG's:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

or those of OpenDNS:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

and try again.

Why not just buy one of the excellent ring flashes for Pentax, like the Pentax P-TTL AF-160FC or the Sigma EM-140 DG P-TTL macro ringlight? (My dentist uses a Canon ring flash that looks a lot like the Pentax version).

Or any cabled manual ring flash - from Yongnuo or a multitude of others.

You seem to be right. I read their phone number wrong.

CRK is selling on Amazon now:

Sold by C.R. KENNEDY & COMPANY PTY LTD

and the prices seem to match what they have on eBay, which is good.

Edit: And now the same listings formerly marked as Sold by C.R. KENNEDY & COMPANY PTY LTD are now marked as 'Sold by Dcxpert' . Again, just like eBay.

Sigma 35mm F1.4 Focus inconsistent on K-1
Posted By rawr

You are correct.

But I think this particular Sigma has some specific design or lens firmware issues of it's own that are the problem. My experience eg with K-3 was inconsistency - using PDAF, 10 shots on a tripod using flash at the same flat test target would produce 4 or 5 shots out of focus with the Sigma 35 f1.4.

In contrast, the FA 50 f1.4 via normal PDAF would nail 10/10, or the SamYang 85 f1.4 manually focussed would always see the green focus hexagon illuminate at correct focus 10/10.

Not particularly good buys. Re the sellers: who the hell are 'Camera Electronic'. I think they are from Malaysia, not AU. And 'michaels camera-video' seem to be from Italy.

Buyer beware.

That razor thin DOF!

Hard to assess overall sharpness wide-open, but around the centre it certainly seems OK.

Will there be a setting for LED lighting white balance ... firmware update maybe?

Most RAW tools have some form of WB dropper, luckily. Even the Pentax Digital Camera Utility lets you use a dropper to select up to 5 grey points in an image.

If I haven't been able to shoot a grey card on scene, I will often simply scour the image in PP for some element at an event that gives a good WB reading - like the neck of the microphone near a singer's face, for example.

Sigma 35mm F1.4 Focus inconsistent on K-1

The Sigma 35 has a long history of reports of focus inconsistency. Mine behaves erratically on K-3, but although I haven't used it much on K-1, it seems better behaved there.

This forum has many threads where the issue comes up. The Internet has many examples of similar reports on Nikon and Canon too, so the problem is not Pentax specific.

I haven't seen any reports of a sure-fire fix to the problem. And many owners report no problem at all.

I don't set a custom WB at the scene. Instead I always shoot RAW and take a few images of a grey card [$2 on eBay] under representative scene lighting (as best I can, if the stage is distant, for example). Then back home on the PC, I use the grey card shots to apply WB readings to selected images in Lightroom, using the WB dropper. It gives a good starting point for colour and WB fine-tuning, which is often the best you can hope for with LED's.
