Sony A7r4 announced. 61mp.

...There's a sample gallery on DPR with portraits. Initial thoughts: in some half a year Canon will announce something like RS with 60-70 megapixel matrix, not that impressive on paper but with more pleasing colours :)

The same. But at the same time Sony has the least yellowish greens. If only we were reptiles... :)

I have a feeling that here Sony amplify shadows and contrast and that's the reason why Sony pics seem to look more sharp. The woman's eye colour - I feel that Sony's brown eye colour reproduction is just too dark to match a reality (just a feeling, but I have many brown eyed people around) whereas Canon is simply natural.

My personal preference is to have from the beginning as natural (i.e. close to what I see) RAW as possible. Then I can add sharpness, contrast, amplify colours and so on in post processing. It seems to me that that is easier than doing the opposite - trying to get a natural look from in-camera amplified RAWs. In case of Sony I would try to decrease contrast (and may be lower shadows), but perhaps that would cause overall loss of contrast (not only skin tones but background, too) and that would require working with colour channels and changing contrast in reds only (kind of that).

I can compare Pentax and Fuji RAWs - Fuji have this additional contrast and deep shadows from the beginning. It's not a bad thing - but just for why? :)

More on Canon and Sony colours, that time 5DSR vs A7RIII. Canon just looks more gentle...

DA lenses on an A7ii?

It seems there're no autofocus K-E adapters yet. Also it seems that a lense without an aperture ring will operate wide open (f2.8 in your case). I would consider either getting a used K-1 to use Pentax lenses or keep current Pentax APS-C cameras and lenses, go with Sony A7ii and look at new Samyang AF lenses for E mount which are cheaper than Sony offerings and seem to be not bad at all.

Thanks for feedback! I gave a Fuji camera to a friend till the end of the summer, but when it's back I can make a little test with my Pentax and Fuji gear using similar lenses (K-mount via adapter) and camera settings.

His point was that whereas Canon has smooth tonal transition, Sony has a kind of a border between 2 different colours. Kind of that. Here is another his post where he compares Sony A7ii and Sigma Quattro H (look at the lips - there is that smoothness in Sigma case, though lenses used are different - Sigma Art vs Samyang). Pictures here are his own.

About that guy - as far as I understand he has owned and / or tested Canons 5D something and 5DSR (his current camera), Pentaxes 645D and K1 (liked both, used to own 645D), Sony A7ii (sold because pics looked "cheap" for him) and Sigma Quattro H (tested, mixed feelings).

In the first quoted post pics are from Internet. In comments some Sony owner wrote the same - that perhaps they were shot with compressed RAW and that was the point.

Really sorry for Russian - just it's the only source where I've read about that issue in any language.

Sorry, he doesn't write in English... I thought that pictures in that post speak for themselves and gave a rather brief summary of what he was writing about.

At the end of the post that guy voiced the same suspicions - Sony somehow compute colours in their RAWs in a way that a pixel is a kind of average of nearby ones. And it's not about colour science. And, for example, A7R (1st gen) didn't have that feature. Perhaps that helps with noise reduction. Canon pics look more noisy, Sony's are more clean but luck tonal range. I would prefer to keep tonal range, it is always possible to kill it and denoise an image at post processing, whereas to get tonal range is impossible.

This link leads to one Russian guy's blog, in his post he compares pics taken by Canon 5D mark IV and Sony A7RIII, and his point is that Sony's RAWs somehow lack tonal range in middle tones and highlights and because of this Sony's pics look "cheap". Canon has smooth transition of colours, Sony doesn't. He writes also that it's a problem on newer Sonies, 1st gen A7's didn't have that. It seems to me that can be seen on Sean Tucker's video, too.

I don't have any personal experience with Canon sensors, but from what I've read it seems that their crappiness is rather overestimated. I mean that can be a point if you need to do +4EV adjustment, but if you ever need to, that means that something's gone terribly wrong before. And - at least in my case - that happens not that often :) And as a free bonus to Canon sensors you get pleasing Canon colours.

What for the price - Canon's new RF full frame 35 1.8 is not much more expensive than Fuji's APS-C analogs. Fuji's APS-C 50-140 2.8 is slightly cheaper than Pentax full frame 70-200 2.8... May be it makes sense to compare exect lense types from different manufacturers.

P. S. About sensors - I own an X-T20 and I've noticed that there highlights get blown much easier than on Pentax K-5 ii s. I use 35 and 23 2 mainly. You too has both Pentax and Fuji gear, have you noticed the same? I just don't know what to blame - lenses or sensor.

Sorry, cheaper than X-T3 of course, thanks for noticing that. Both at BH and in Moscow. The same with new Canon RF 85 1.2 vs Fujinon 110 2.

At BH RP is $1300, X-T3 is $1400, X-T30 with 18-55 2.8-4 zoom + SD card + camera bag is the same $1300 as RP.

For high megapixel offerings (Sony A7R analogs) I predict that building a system based on Fuji's first gen MF offerings will be actually cheaper than on not-yet-issued Canon's and Sony's. Though FF have wider lens selection. From the other side, right now new Sigma and Tamron lenses are much closer to (if not better than) main brand offerings and still reasonably priced.

I suppose Nikon's f1.4 offerings will cost the same, just Canon decided to issue their hi-tech L lenses first. Just wonder how much will Nikon's 58 0.95 cost :) Meanwhile Fuji's MF portrait 110 2 is $2300. Really, if something very bad happens to Pentax within next 5-7 years and I will be tempted to change the brand, with these price tags I will rather look at Fuji's MF offerings on a second-hand market.

But the best comparison is beyween these new 50s: Canon 1.2 vs Panasonic 1.4 vs Pentax 1.4 is now $2300 vs $2300 vs $1000 (checked at BH, alas in my native Moscow Pentax costs about $1250). Just madness.

Canon RP costs even a bit less than Fuji's APS-C X-T30, but these new Canon RF L lenses cost more than Fuji's MF GFs... Intersting marketing.

It will be interesting to read your future experience with and impressions of Fuji gear. I got an X-T20 2 years ago, well, for similar reasons and mine impressions are still mixed.

Plus they produce photo paper for them... I've recently got a 30*45 cm print of one of my pics, for 2 USD. For the same price (here in Russia) I can print from 2 to 3 Instax pics. I just can't justify its photo paper's cost, way too expensive if shoot frequently. But it can be kinda nice toy :)

I've read some Russian folks claiming that pictures from Fuji crop and Nikon FF are practically the same :) Just marketing stuff. By the way, when Pentax offered nothing for a FF for a decade, didn't any Pentax representative tell the same about crop vs FF in order to justify FF lack?

I own both Pentax and Fuji and love them both though they are different. And I don't need these marketing fairy-tales to justify owning a Fuji :) The main difference between Pentax and Fuji crop systems is that Fuji is really all-around whereas even Pentax crops are primarily for still shooters (you can do rapid things and video with Pentax, too, but Fuji does that better and more safe for your nervous system). And that all-around Fuji crop system is cheaper than its FF analogs from Canon / Nikon / Sony.

P.S. Actually, Fuji MF can be a Pentax FF replacement (when AF is of lower importance). In some 5-7 years used GFX 50s will cost not much more than new FFs...
