Nippon Camera Ricoh/Pentax 2019 Interview

Small, light, weather sealed, versatile, in camera stabilization, backward compatible - those are the hallmarks of Pentax for me.

It's funny to me that people want Pentax to ape Sony or Canon. Years ago when I was at a NASA Launch and it started to rain heavily there were 3 photographers that didn't scramble for the buildings. Two of them were pros with $10k of equipment that was weather sealed. Oh, and then there was me with my K-5. They were both flabbergasted that my <$1K camera was safe. Pentax baby!

Portrait lens length was traditionally 70-150. I love my 85/1.4 and the runner up is my DA70 LTD. The 85 is manual focus, which is fine for portraits. The DA70Ltd is AF and better for portrait style candids.

Different customers. For weddings the people paying see the event as THE most important in their lives to date. For photo journalists they are dealing with bean counters with fewer and fewer beans to count every day. The math is easy.

The 70mm is like the old 105 from film days. Some of the best portrait photographers took some of their most flattering photos with 105s. Its a nice lens and is 2nd only to my 85 for the beauty of the portraits that I can capture with it.

Sharp corners is why we have macro lenses. In the film days people did stare at corners with loupes but they didn't use 35mm for product shots typically. We cropped back then too, it was just a bit harder to do.

50 was not a common portrait lens in film days. The oddball 77mm was but 85 was typically seen as the short end of portrait lenses and 150 the upper end. Longer lenses change the image in more than just the framing of the image. My advice is to shoot the same portrait with your 50mm and then with something in the 70-135 range (preferably 85-105) from a tripod with the same lighting. Most often people select the shots from the 85-105 length lenses even when the two are cropped to appear to be framed identically.

Given the prices on lenses like the 18-135 (particularly used) and its still a small lens, the idea of using an 18-55 seems a bit silly to me.

You can visit eBay and put in the item and select "Sold" as an option. That will tell you how much each item has sold for in the past several months. This will give you a real-time relative value for each item and the likelihood that it will sell.

Why pay when you have thousands of "free" cell phone photos available in the developed world? Its a job that is rapidly disappearing. Remember what Sports Illustrated did with their photographers a few years back?

I'd even consider a used K-5II or IIs as those would be a big step up from the K10D. I'd use the extra savings on something wider and something faster in lenses. In my experience in museums and crowded areas 10-14mm is more useful than even 16mm.

According to the manual it depends on what mode you are in which AF settings are available.

What Paul said is right. Once you find an old 1gb card you'll later be able to do higher capacity cards. Both v1.02 & v1.03 added SDHC Card compatibility.

Step-down rings are great. Personally, I'd consider two CPL filters - 82mm & 58mm with step-downs for the other sizes.

Best Cost-Quality ratio CPL for me when I reviewed all the various articles and opinions was the Marumi Super DHG MC CPLmodels.

Good luck.

I'd suggest that you get the DA12-24 for interior shots for real estate and the DA55-300 for those nature shots and longer distance animal shots. If you shop carefully you might be able to get both used for around $500. I have an 18-250 and its barely used because it has so many compromises. If I travel and can take only one lens it gets chosen sometimes, but not always.

I realize that many here are enamored of the 55-300 PLM version but it costs a LOT more than the HD WR version and the gains are.....minimal based on side-by-side comparisons I've reviewed.

Good luck.

I've taken event photos for a variety of 501(c)3 organizations over the years. Most have been organizations to which my children belong. It's gets me greater access to the event and gets them lots of photos to use for the participants and for promotions in the future - a win-win.

It seems to have 3 companies reselling it on Amazon (same physical unit) for $25-30 each now. If you can buy directly from China they're $19 on that site.

Nice review of that unit from China here:

There have been a TON of firmware updates for the K1 so it can handle various lenses. Do you have v1.50 installed?
