The K-3 line will continue!

My view on the K3(x) or whatever the next "uptown" APS-c DSLR (aka "Birder" box) is not really due to resource constraints at Pentax. Their planning cycles are remarkably predictable (IMHO)... They are waiting for the firming up of a 30+mp sensor (Not sure if it will be SONY), so they can "fast follow" the Next Gen CaNikon offering, but repeat the play of lower cost, better glass, more features. Within the announcement of a viable 30mp APS-c (my estimate 32mp APS-c) sensor with the right pitch and crosstalk approach, 3-6 months out, CaNikon a month after, add 3-4 months for Pentax, We'll get teased. I'm wagering for November to Feb teases.

On licensed formulas and Technologies:

AF, Lens Data, Coatings, and I believe (senior moment here) one for barrel design/formula for some gen2 Nikon AF glass (late 90s)... AsahiMan has a much better recall than me... Nice job Vanya...

HD Pentax-D FA* 70-200mm on a K-70???

Absolutely. The 60-250 only had one maintenance stop, every 2-3 years I send my main lenses to CRIS for calibration (preventative). SDM was perfect (not like my 16-50 3 motors in 5 years and a front barrel replaced/jammed), would work quite well with HDTC1.4x (my urban lower profile combo). if it was F2.8 (but DA size), wouldn't have swapped it out. For me, I spend a lot of time in deep woods/ tropics where ambient/ conditions don't always allow for flash easily. MF/ QF helps a lot...:)

I shoot a K-3 in the wild. I used to use the 55-300, great, light, but needed more light. I moved up to the 60-250 F4 DA*. Exceptional lens in all ways, light, small (for what it is), world class IQ. Wanted more light, moved up to 70-200 DFA*. Similar IQ to the 60-250 DA*, better at low light. Heavy.. no make that HEAVY. But for work afield, no ZOOM creep (extending from gravity) while walking. I wanted the larger aperture, was willing to trade off weight. If you don't plan on going to FF or use a TC a lot, I'd look at the 60-250 DA*. Great price too. NEVER had any issues with it.:)

I can't disagree with your logic on the limiteds, I didn't know of the 2016 run. I am definitely with Norm on the buying opportunities. My hope on the bigger glass is due to the higher CA on big FA* primes. The 560 has much lower CA than the 300 f2.8 and the 400 f5.6 in the FA* lenses. I easily dump it in post, but I wish I didn't have to. 🙂

I expect a refresh on the limiteds (easier), the 85 next, then an F4 70mm to 2xx or 3xx something, then a revamp of a 400mm f 5.6 and MAYBE a 600f4 revamp (refresh of the FA design. K-1 will hold steady for a while, APSc is waiting for a 28-36mp sensor with shift that can take some motion (like the non-pentax one)....and the next gen MF refresh to 100mp, with a 600mm for it...

If you change the video setting from 4K to 1080 (Camera Settings menu), does it allow you to pick "Narrow"? Mine does, 4K or Still image, Burst, or High speed stills lock it wide as well... Hope this helps....

I like AF for doing the basic work. Quick shift lets me have control. Now if only my eyesight was better... :)

Seriously though, many folks forget that in all of the bench tests the SAFOX was a bit slower because Pentax set the control limits tighter, loosen them up, and you get a Canon or Nikon.

For me, it's all about the glass and the transmission quality. K-3, K3II, K-1 seem to do very well.

Besides, I would rather get insight on what a good camera/lens is from others I meet on this forum, clients, or my own eyes.... Andre Agassi, I'll take his recommendation on strings and tension...

Good point. Did they do the K-1 mod for you? It might be interesting to see what firmware is in their body vs yours (maybe they checked). Assuming that your AF/ Mirror/ PPrism are sound, I end up at a misaligned diopter in the eyepiece, forcing interpretive errors. Sorry, it's above my "pay grade"... Best wishes on the journey

Love my K-01. I use it for eBay listing photos.... Sits in luggage (body) as a last chance backup. A little blocky, but so were Marc Newsom Ikepod watches....Cell Phone for concerts (Hassy attachment is great), else DSLR or 5.2K Video (VILC). If I need to adjust ISO, Mode, F Stop or Speed? DSLR so I can see what I get....

I used to enjoy my Minox Baubles, but manual range focusing was a drag.... If they reissued the K-01 in 24MP or FF? I'd buy one when it dropped to $250 like the K-01. I am waiting for the 30MP APSc killer K-"Whatever"... :)

Point & Shoot for me... Point and Shoot, no operator intervention required. Kodak Brownies, Kodak Instamatics, most Lumix and Canon "pocket rockets", most any camera with facial recognition for subjects, Sony MILCs, particularly A7s and A9. Nothing wrong with any, but built so any novice can get 1;100 and think they are the next Ansel Adams or Moose... :)

For the record, I enjoy the discussions and have immense respect for many members in this thread... I have learned from all...

Not since Brexit and the 2016 Presidential, have I seen the passionate opining like this thread. I have thought about it, and noticing the emotions on this thread, it came to me that the basics are the same in Brexit, 2016 Election, and Mirrorless. The debate is personal control (in this debate creative control and potentially IQ) vs depending on some "system" (in this case EVF or "I trust the system" AF).

With DSLRs, the artist/ snapper has a direct view of the light that will hit the sensor/film, the exposure of it, the way it will focus, etc. The mirrorless shooter yields more control to the camera, since the EVF image is "fake". By "fake" (I know some of you will be enraged), I mean imputed to a low res LCD. The unfocused edges you see are oscillating pixels used to provide a proxy for an out-of focus state. They stop flickering when the sensor AF software tells it (in ITS opinion) that it is a good shot... Nothing wrong with it, but simple facts.

Mirrorless brings better focusing to bear for inexperienced shooters. Nothing wrong with that. SONY uses the platform for R&D for sensors, their real moneymaker, Nothing wrong with that either. It also shrinks things a bit and saves a buck. Definitely nothing wrong with that.

Experienced shooters may wish automation simplicity for non-critical shots. Only the shooter knows what non critical is... Some will use AF where suitable (in each shooters 'noggin), but a number of earners and enthusiasts won't settle and forfeit control. Nothing wrong with that.

So, like the politicians (I am neutral on 99% of it), I am enjoying the control (creative) vs the acceptance of giving control to a system debate which may not suit all users needs. Today's MILCs are simply the next gen of point & shoots with better glass. Nothing wrong with that either..

Have a Great Weekend, All!

For the "30 year Pentax owners".....

Going back to the LX/ SP days.... Looking at all of the "lens Family" pics, projections, RoadMaps, and the like, I remember YEARS of delay disappointments (in parts, some lenses were late), disappointments in production quantities (FA*200mm F4 Macro to name a biggy), but I can't remember one instance where Pentax prototyped and developed a lens that didn't come out or wasn't succeeded by an actual production piece...

ME-F was a non starter, as was MZ-D, admitted, but a lens posted as a spec on the map? Can't remember any...

We use this lens (Gen2). If your lens has a rubber coating it's Gen1. If the exterior is smooth black resin(plastic) it is Gen2.
We use it on a pair of K-3's. It is my wife's primary long lens, the DFA150-450 was too heavy for her.She is very happy with it.

On Mechanics: We calibrate all lenses to frames using Bourque Charts (we made from his eBook) or DataColor Lens Cal. We acquired the lens from Kenmore in 2014, a demo. It calibrated with backfocus of -3 and -4 then.

When the free K-1 retrofit offer came out, we sent it to Sigma for the new mount (Late 2016). Great job, good parts, upgraded firmware, calibrated (their camera) . Back home on the K-3s, I rechecked, was dead zero on both bodies. It is perfect. If Siggy wants your body, OK, I don't think there is an issue, but "I DUNNO". Takes great pics.

Hope this helps...:)

This year I sold a fully outfitted LX7 Lumix, the Moto Z Force camera is fine for Social media, warranty repair pics, barcode reading, rock concert (where cams are banned), etc. Add the Hasselblad add-on, poof, no more Lumix needed...

For those of us that shoot for a living/compensation, rest assured that the millions of terabytes of phone pics on stock photo sites take no value. Interestingly enough, clients send a "snappy" and say "Can you do a REAL one of these, with these changes?". I love a client using a web snappy as a way to ask for a setting (with a different animal), a sky shot with a different location/ cloud span, a framing, but with a different city/ building, etc. Speeds up the process. Folks will also send a pic and say "Absolutely nothing like this, but...", another peach...

Full-frame (FA) lens on an APS-C body

If you like light weight and acceptable images on an APSc camera, the DA/DC/etc. class lenses will do fine. If you want really good images on an APSc camera buy the better APSc glass (DA*, pro/ better quality Siggies and Tamrons, or Zeiss with MF). I was a diehard DA* user and defender. At issue were the 4 motors I put in a 16-50 DA* (albeit with very heavy commercial level usage). My wife's "pry my cold dead hands off it" lens is the DA 18-270. She is a well published and award winning pic taker, and for other than long critters, her go to lens. Before that it was the 18-250, not as good a build. DA*s are GREAT lenses, as are the limiteds...

On FF on APSc, I had heavy CA on a FA 85 f1.4, some on F300 F4.5 and a bit on FA*300 F2.8. My wife has little issue with her Siggy 150-500 DG (GEN2, a key difference). Well controlled lens, and FF. I recently switched to the DFA Trio (15-30, 24-70, 70-200 DA*) and have been using the DA 150-450 on a K3 for years. I switched for 2 reasons, build quality and newer coatings, both helpful in the field. Backpack weight went up 2 lbs across the 3 lower range and the DA solution. This is MORE TO LUG. I got 1/2 stop from 135-200mm (F2.8 vs F4), important in what I shoot. Newer coatings perform better, better controlled flare and CA. Have the option for FF if I want a different DoF profile, but due to wildlife, I'm a dedicated APSc shooter. Yes, a tiny bit more crisp at the edges, less vignetting in the corners with wider glass...

No downside to FF on APSc, except weight and cost, older ones will show more CA (even GREAT lenses), upside is bigger apertures (depending on the solution), maybe better on edges and in the corners. Like Norm said, just a smaller image from the center...:)
