I say this in a serious non-critical, non derisary sense:

If you want to argue or discuss politics you should educate yourself and learn how to use a modern political vocabulary. It is not the function of people using this forum to teach you what that vocabularly should be or contain. It is your job to decide what political views you believe in and then promote them vigorously. Until you are able to do that don't make a fool of yourself.

Those pictures make me feel physically a little bit sick - the media should be displaying them and over-exposing this poisonous fringe. You will never change their opinions but you will get them the universal contempt that they deserve.

I have a K10D with the FOCUSINGSCREEN.COM installed and a K20D with the OPTIBRITE KATZEYE.
Both are good - the KATZEYE is better but costs more and I was happy to pay more!

You are similar to the person who is against pornography, complains that there is too much pornography in it, but carries on reading it anyway!

Don't you see something "hippocritical" about that too?

I agree with everything you say and I know (to my own satisfaction) that there is no way that CAIN will be the Republican candidate. The way he personally is handling this business may well become a reason for his elimination.

I do not, however, agree with political maneuvering using scandalous, unproven (or unprovable) allegations from over 10 years ago as a fair or acceptable means of eliminating anybody.

GOP Presidential Debate:

Well, I watched the GOP debate last night and although I am a Liberal (and always will be) I was surprised at the quality of the debate. One of the most interesting that I have watched.

I expected to be and was impressed by Romney.

Michele Bachmann was the biggest surprise for me, I actually liked her and came away impressed by her courage in firmly stating her position on Gay Marriage and Right to Life - even though these positions will lose her millions of potential votes.

Abortion Rights Ambiguity

This topic is difficult for me to debate because I know that nobody’s mind gets changed during such discussions and usually this is one of the topics that involves, or ends up with, name-calling and anger. To make it worst (for me), it is a subject where a man always has the emotional disadvantage because he can never conceive a baby in his womb and then have to deal with the results.

I do reject that argument logically, incidentally, because this is primarily a moral or ethical question (at least for me) and thus independent of gender or who bears the baby but that does not make this disadvantage go away.

Many men also need to examine themselves and their real, innermost self, on this issue. It is a much deeper question than the politics of the abortion issue would have you believe. It is so easy to neglect that internalized process and totally avoid the niggling doubts about terminating a life. Casting that life to the wind and then forgetting about it, rationalizing the “woman’s right to chose”, avoiding your own part in the decision making process for your own convenience. Let her decide!

I am an Agnostic regarding religion because although I do not believe in any form of God, I don’t “KNOW” that there is no God because that “knowing” is also a faith and additionally, I cannot explain “conscious existence” and the outside world or how it was created. The point here is that I do not speak from any form of religious faith.

However, if I did become a believer in God and if I believed therefore that this God was involved in the creation of each life, if in fact every person was from God, then who would I be to decide to kill that life and why would, therefore, abortion not automatically become a sin much as the Roman Catholic church preaches?

Having no religious faith relieves me from this particular dilemma but many, many other people are not relieved from this religious burden and I do not know how they rationalize their way around this problem. I do know however that a human being has an enormous propensity to rationalize inconvenient facts.

How many abortions occur per year in the US?

Well, that depends on whose propaganda you read but I have seen one number of 1.3 million souls - and therefore 1.3 million rationalizations (some easy, some hard).

It will be clear from the above that I am totally against abortion except in the rare case where the woman’s own life is threatened by the pregnancy.

Most if not all arguments around the abortion issue are violently intense, people kill over the issue. No body has their mind changed as a result of discussion because nobody is open to having their mind changed. There are ‘canned’ questions and ‘canned’ answers about every aspect of abortion including the well known emotional ones.

What about rape?

What about incest?

What about the bad old days of the back-room abortions?

Abortion is a life or death decision – very simple!

Everything else is rationalization and the couple or woman making this decision should not be anesthetized from that fact by pro-abortion propaganda.

jeffkrol - a lot of truth in what you say. One of the biggest (but not by any means the only!) obstacles to political change is a tired political vocabulary which evokes a 'gut reaction' response whenever certain words are used such as "socialism" and "capitalism" are used.

Use of these red flag words reduces all discussions to extremist slogans and intelligent discussion ceases. The words are used as curse words to condemn the opponent to political hell - and effectively so! Look what they have done to Obama.

Now his opponents are trying to dig him deeper into the ground by using the M (Muslim) word!

Political rhetoric and winning the political battles by insults and denigrations works and very effectively so. In such a climate how can any meaningful change happen?

You made the same error of logic - absence of faith is not FAITH.

It is quite simply a denial of any of the religious beliefs. Some will say "if you believe in that then you have at least a belief.

Wrong again, I have an absence of belief in any of the religious teachings.

P&R Discussion Forum Closed:

I note that Adam has closed this forum down because of abuse by some users.

There does not appear to have been any follow-up discussion of this action nor any objection from other members and the topic remains closed indefinitely?

This seems to me a pity!

In between the vast majority of Pentax related topics (as it should be) - it was interesting and stimulating to occasionally pop over to the P&R section to indulge in some intellectual arguments.

Some may well dispute the use of the word "intellectual" in this context!

Political argument, by its very nature, is and should be vigorous and those who do not like this type of discussion can stay away.

As a very occasional visitor to this P&R topic I still find that the whole forum has lost some spice because of this ban. What is your view, I wonder?
