I'm glad the timing works well for Pentaxians in Australia and New Zealand!
Assuming of course this turns out to actually be released this fall...

Pentax 560mm ?

I was really hoping they'd have released this for summer; I do most of my bird photography during the summer months, and I really could have used this lens. If they release in the fall, I'll likely put off the purchase( assuming the price isn't too astronomical) until spring 2013.

Any other rumours as to release/MSRP?

Why I want a K-01

Yeah, mirrorless K-5, pretty much.
OVF would be ok, too, but EVF is an area Pentax could really lead the market forward.

It is a cool camera, I just can't see myself buying. I have a K-5 and I love it.
But a higher tech mirrorless K5? Hey, I'd shell out bigger bucks for that- ~$2Kish

I didn't mean to slag the K-01, not trying to be negative.
I'm just hoping Pentax reads this board, and makes a "souped up" version of this new APS-C concept- which I think is a great move.

16-50 SDM Failure

The SDM on my 16-50 is toast. I've tried cleaning the contacts with no luck. I'll send it in to Pentax Canada, and hopefully it'll be ok.
I'll post the SN in the db.

Previously, I've had two issues with my 50-135, but it's been fine since I got it back.

It's a great concept, and a good first iteration.
As much as I love Pentax, I can't see myself buying this particular camera.

What I'd really like in my next Pentax body:
-mirrorless APS-C
-high resolution EVF
-weather seals
-TvAv/dials

K5- but a little smaller, and mirrorless, with super EVF.

I really like the looks of the OM-D- I hope Pentax takes some cues from the design of that camera, and applies them to their groundbreaking work in mirror less APS-C. That will be a game changer, and it will probably sell Pentax a ton of cameras.
I hope the k-01 sells really well for Pentax, and I think it will.

DA* 50-135mm failure

Got it back. Pentax Canada charged me $225, saying the front ring was cracked. I'm a bit skeptical, but I'm happy to have this lens back in time for summer.

@Benjikan: Sorry to hear that. I wonder if they die because we don't use them for a month or more?
If that's the case, maybe the trick is to connect them to a camera every week or so? Not an acceptable solution for top shelf lenses, but if this was formally documented somewhere, at least we'd know.

Thanks JHD! I'll have a look at it.

Hopefully my 50-135 will be revived, and survive for a while after this year's visit to Pentax Canada.

Thanks for sharing your experience Phil; I'm happy to hear yours has been working well. It is a great lens optically: it really is like having a set of really good primes in one lens. Hopefully I'll have better luck with it going forward.

@JHD: What would you recommend for a 3rd party zoom in similar FL? I'm still hoping I can get some satisfaction from Pentax on the 50-135, as I really do like it (when it works.) But, I think its time to start shopping for a replacement/ backup.

It's frustrating, but not the end of the world. I've got some other lenses. The DA* 200 is excellent, and hasn't given me any problems at all.

I'm still covered by warranty, and hopefully this'll be the last time I need to send the lens in to repair.

Anyone having better luck? I bought the lens in 2009- are the newer units less prone to fail?

I'm calm, and I'm certainly not going to smash the lens or anything.
Pretty unhappy with my experience with this particular lens. It's frustrating, because it's such a great lens when its working properly.

This is becoming an annual tradition! :mad:Sent this lens in to Pentax Canada about this time last year, and they:
- Replaced Motor
- Replaced PCB
- Replaced Gear Plate Assy.

The SDM has failed again; the lens cannot autofocus at all, on K20, K5. Tried leaving it attached to a powered on camera for a while, no luck.

I think I'm going to ask Pentax for a whole new copy of this lens; are newer units any less likely have SDM autofocus failure?

My other SDM lenses are OK so far. Wish Pentax would allow the lenses to be used as screwdrive in case of SDM failures.

Underscore with hooks! That's super; thanks very much for clearing that up for me.

Wonder why Pentax didn't devote a sentence to this in the manual? Oh wait, these are the same folks who wrote the 540 flash manual....

If it wasn't for these forums, I doubt I'd have noticed this in real use.
There's a lesson here for me, I think.

It's there. Easier to see on full-size image.
Maybe it's not such a big deal. I'll use camera for a few weeks, see if and how it impacts my photos.
Might get the sensor cleaned or buy a kit.

Big blob appears in the middle of the frame at f/10 bad by f/16 up to f/22

Just got this camera today.
Bummer.

Think I'll hang on the camera for a bit, until Pentax has a fix.

Don't see the point of sending it off just to get another one with the same issue.

Did the sensor cleaning built in to the camera, tried to blow it off with rocket bulb. No joy.

Guess saying it's a big blob might be overstating it a bit. Still this fouls me up for macro, and I'd like it fixed/replaced for the money I spent as an early adopter.

The DA* 55 is slower, but the colour rendering, contrast, and overall IQ are much better than the FA, IMO. Pretty sharp at wider apertures, too.

I'm really happy with this lens.

I hope they do a 30mm weathersealed SDM soon.

I'm really happy in the Pentax system. The value for money is astounding- the DA* lenses are just lovely.

I pulled the trigger on the DA* 55, because of my really positive experience with the 16-50, and the 50-135. Hopefully it shows up today!

I have a pretty full system in Pentax, for about the same money it would have cost me to buy a 5DII and one L lens.

My name is Sean, and I'm still fairly new to photography.

My first camera was a Kodak DC 3800, which I loved, followed by a Canon G5, an S60, and then a K10D.

Since buying the K10, I've upgraded to the K20, and spent a nice used car's worth of money on Pentax glass.

I also own a Canon G9, which is a good little camera for those times where I don't want to lug 15lbs of camera stuff with me.

I've been lurking here for a long time, thought I should sign up. You folks seem really nice, and I think I'll continue learning a lot from you.
