Focus Screen Compatability

Huh, really? I don't know if the screens in the higher-end (or newer) cameras are better in this regard, but on my K-30, the stock screen just had far too much DoF to get accurate manual focusing. Getting the S-Type screen did wonders.

Admittedly, when I later bought a Bronica (I had never shot film before), I discovered how cool a microprism aid is -- but it only works in the center.

I ordered mine from that very site for my K-30, I believe back in 2014, and it did include some shims.

Except for the S-Type (cut down Canon Ee-S?) with no aid in the center (just Super Precision Matte all over), right?

Nikon mirrorless teaser?

My point about autofocus microadjustment still stands in that scenario.

Except that said rear display has only half the resolution of the EVF, or possibly even less on the newest and most expensive cameras.

For stability's sake, I personally find those situations to equal pretty much all the time. Unusual angles (like over a crowd) excepted.

While I appreciate the WYSIWYG nature of LV/EVF as a nice-to-have, for me it's not the primary appeal of a MILC with EVF. Rather, I see it as:
  • Not having to worry about autofocus microadjustment when using the viewfinder (and that can be appreciated even by those who don't shoot MF lenses)

  • Focus peaking in the viewfinder

  • Easy lens adaptation without replacing the mount on either camera or lens

And, of course, the potential for significantly smaller lenses, but that hasn't yet been exploited as fully as I'd hope.

"why i switch to pentax" = no?

My first DSLR was a Canon Rebel T3 (= bottom-of-the-line) gifted to me for Christmas one year by my brother and discovered in my basement months later. I switched from Canon to Pentax in 2013 because of the unbeatable value for money in the price range I could justify. (Mirrorless systems were still too expensive in 2013 for what you got. In 2014 or 2015 I might not have made the same decision.)

Three years later, I switched back, because my K-30's aperture block failed... to Canon, because my brother sold me his used 5D for cheap and I wanted to use the 40mm pancake I still had from a going-out-of-business sale in the Rebel T3 days again, but I bought a Pentax strap to put on it and electrical-taped over the Canon logo like the press photographers at conventions always seem to do -- not because I'm pretending to be a professional, but because I'm not proud of being back on Canon.

While I miss the lenses, the ergonomics, and the mere ability to turn on the camera in the New Jersey winter, the bigger viewfinder is nice for focusing, and using Contax Zeiss lenses is easier. Oddly, I haven't really been too frustrated with giving up autofocus -- perhaps partially because nobody bothers asking me to take their picture anymore (and for self-portraits I can still use the pancake or the Tamron 28-75/2.8).

If I ever get another Pentax, it probably won't be until the KP is on closeout and I know I'm going on a trip where I'll need the weather-sealing (like yet another trip to Walt Disney World, where you can count on a 15-minute downpour every afternoon), or perhaps if the K-1 drops to three figures used and I suddenly find myself single.

Interesting that, in each case, the first of the pair is the last post on its page. @Racer, if you see my post as #15, what do you see as post #60? (I am also seeing morenjavi's post show up as both #60 and #62.)

Thank you! That's quite a relief. Must be some weird glitch then.
What duplicates are everyone else seeing? I'm wondering if there are others in the same boat as myself (who can't see their own posts on the thread).

You don't see HippyHippo's post 4338003 showing up as both post #15 and post #16 (end of page 1 and top of page 2)?

Now I'm wondering if different people are seeing different duplicates, as that one's the only one I noticed...

The reason I was asking is that, as I said earlier in the thread, clicking that link doesn't show my post -- it shows HippyHippo's duplicate instead (where my post should be, going by the post numbers). So I wanted to be sure.

Hey Adam,

In light of the fact that the first thread has at least one duplicate post and a number of posts past 50, would it be possible to get a list of the usernames of the people who entered successfully so we know who does and doesn't have to come back for the second thread? Thanks ~

This is so weird. My profile says I have a post on June 1 and another yesterday, and I didn't get any error message when I hit Submit Reply, and my profile also shows a post in the first raffle thread with number 4338002, but clicking the link doesn't show it -- instead, post 4338003 shows up twice for me.

But I would love to be proven wrong here. :)

Wonder what would happen if I tried to pre-order one? Is this just supposed to be the X-T100 (the price and the talk of three colors makes me suspect so)?

It was my understanding that the 58/1.4G was a specialist for night shooting due to very low coma (like the Noct-Nikkor that came before it), and if you didn't need that, then there was no reason to shell out the extra $ compared to Nikon's other 50s. So perhaps not the best comparison?

Difference between Pentax K1 Raw vs Sony Raw???

Don't color filter arrays still differ between cameras though? How strict or loose the band-passing is on the CFA could affect what's captured in the raw file and therefore what you can do with the colors. I know some cameras even in the CMOS era have legendary reputations for colors (Canon 5D, Sony A900), and I had always thought the CFA played a part.

If I'm remembering correctly, that was only a problem on the K-30, K-50, K-500, K-S1, and K-S2. Top models were never affected, and I'm pretty sure older models were not either.

Seeking wide, fast lense with nice bokeh. K-70.

I'm pretty sure that most phone cameras have a field of view nearly equivalent to 28mm on 36x24, not on APS-C. To get the same view on the OP's K-70, you'd need something closer to 20mm.
That said, I still don't have any K-mount recommendations better than the 24mm lenses Clackers mentioned (despite the tighter field of view), simply because fast lenses wider than that are hard to come by.

Tamron 85mm VC lens vs Pentax IS (5 axis)
Posted By Scintilla

Sigma and Tamron usually drop the stabilization from K-mount and Sony Alpha-mount versions of their lenses, probably because Pentax and Sony have never publicized a way to synergize in-lens stabilization with in-body stabilization. So if any, there aren't many.

For reference:
Canon = IS (Image Stabilization)
Nikon = VR (Virtual Reality Vibration Reduction)
Pentax = SR (Shake Reduction)
Sony = OSS (Optical SteadyShot)
Sigma = OS (Operating System Optical Stabiilization)
Tamron = VC (Vibration Compensation)
Fujifilm, Samsung, Panasonic = OIS (Optical Image Stabilization?)

---------- Post added 04-17-18 at 10:22 AM ----------

You should know that camera/lens stabilization won't freeze a bouncing subject.
Ironically (since normally this wouldn't help either), what a case like this calls for is better support. :lol:

I am going to hell

Buying after market lenses...wise or not ?

I wouldn't lump in Tamron with Sigma on that count. Tamron's new SP primes are all "only" f/1.8 and smaller for it (though still no Limiteds), and the new 28-75/2.8 they announced for Sony E is also nicely compact compared to the competition.

(One of the reasons I got Tamron's A09 -- i.e. the DSLR 28-75/2.8 -- is because it was fairly light and took only 67mm filters, which couldn't be said about any of the other modern lenses in that range. Of course, I then discovered that its frame edges were too smeared (even when OOF) for my liking...)

I couldn't read that without thinking 5150, and now you have me wanting a camera that'll not only focus light but also amplify sound. :p

(Alternatively, it also made me think of ancient CPUs like the 6502 and the 8086.)

A note for clarity: Samyang/Rokinon lenses in Pentax mount also have the A setting for auto aperture, despite stock product photos oftentimes not showing it (because usually they're just using the photo of the Canon or Nikon mount version which would not have the A setting).
