Rumor: Pentax FF new Limited lenses coming soon?

Well, all said and done, even if Pentax produces a great 70-200 2.8, it's not going to be significantly better than the Tamron, neither the Nikon nor Canon offerings are, so why would you expect the Pentax to be... and most of the people on the site who are interested in that FL are going to buy the Tamron... but, for those with the big bucks, the Pentax 70-200 will be an option. And there are lots of users on the site who will buy one. I bought my DA* 60-250 for about $1500. If the Pentax 70-200 comes in around that price I'll give it a look. At $2400, not so much. We all have our price point. And as the price of the product goes higher and higher, the number of people willing to pay becomes less and less. If it comes with a fast focusing AF lens, and water sealing of course that changes everything. A K-3 is capable of handling a faster focusing lens than SDM can provide so if they can offer this lens as a good fast sports/wildlife lens they can go for the Big Bucks. But I'm not paying Canon/Nikon prices for Pentax SDM and tracking performance. That would be stupid. SO there are a lot of angles here. Charging Canon/Nikon prices to me means achieving Canon/Nikon performance. If they can't do that, I want it cheaper. I'm waiting, but I'm not holding my breath.

But the Tamron is the leader in 70-200 Pentax land now that Sigma has dropped out of the race.. and it's doubtful that's going to change, unless the lens comes in at DA* prices, and given the extra glass needed to cover an FF circle and ƒ2.8, that's not likely to happen.

I would have needed some serious shake resistance to photograph that viper. You're a better man than me!

Great photos. Congratulations on the trip.

Flickr vs. google +

As noted above, both sites are primarily "social photography" sites. Both sites seem to place an inherent value on popularity over quality of photography and associated feedback. Flickr still seems to have more cred than G+. When I was active on G+ two years ago, it seemed that most of the participants were Google employees and a few "Internet" photographers whose primary skill was self-promotion.

I do know several photographers who have sold images via their presence on Flickr. Agents and art buyers looking for an image of a particular subject will search Flickr. That's not to say that Flickr is a requirement for selling images, but it is an avenue for visibility. I prefer the control and peace and quiet that Smugmug offers. And, speaking from experience, if you configure Smugmug right, an agent will find your work there.

My favorite image of your stream is the one of your grandmother and grandaunt. It had the most soul and seemed like the most original.

if sagemax had been able to repair it they said their turnaround time is 10-15 business days...squaretrade is 5 business days....I also had an f 300 at one time...it was an excellent lens but was slower to focus than the da300...now that my da300 was really slow I was looking at the f300 again...it was super light...driline I'm glad you like it...it looked like it was in excellent shape...yos you are right about the fact I am able to have both lens...it is just frustrating when you want to take that "picture" and you don't have what you're used to having

The market isn't for a device with a sized sensor. The market is the price point.

A Pentax full frame at $2500 or so, which I suspect they need to get a K-3 comparable dslr. Compare that to a $500-$1200 price point. The A7 grows the market because the price point is lower. So did the D600 Nikon.

If they could release a FF for $3-400 more than the K-3 they would be moving the market, but I don't think that they can.

Same with the 645D. The number of photographers capable and willing to spend $10k on a body is limited.

Up until this announcement, I thought (and hoped) Ricoh was doing away with the * designation for the premium line of Pentax lenses. Just doesn't make sense to keep the * when

1) It's linked so closely with the tainted reputation of SDM reliability and slowness,

2) It's not internet search friendly,

3) It's weak branding and just plain awkward:

Suzy - "Look at my new lens, it's a DA asterisk 300."
John - "I thought it was a multiply."
Jerry - "No, it's a star."
George - "Oh, I get it. I was going to get one but I wasn't sure it would work on my camera and I couldn't find the footnote to make sure."

Hooray for smaller focus points!

I just got my K-3 this morning. I am very happy to report that the focus points are now much smaller. This used to screw me up when trying to focus on a model's eye and I'd get focus on the nose or something else. Or the AF would pick up a high contrast background behind the subject.

It's hard to describe the size of the focus points, but I can say this. I set the camera to center point focus. I had a small subject with a relatively large distance to the background behind it. I focused on the subject with the center point, then slowly moved the camera away and kept re-focusing until it locked on the background instead. The focus points are now so small that the focus shifted to the background before the subject even cleared the central circular area of the viewfinder!
