Some Advice From a Pro

I traded a few emails from the photo editor from the local newspaper (Pittsburgh Post Gazette) about a possible freelance photographer position. He asked to see some work samples and offered the following suggestions:

----
Just an FYI, when I am looking at portfolios of photographers work, I tend to be impressed by photos that I
a) haven't seen before, that are unique
b) photos that I say to myself, I wish I shot that
c) a photographer who has a distinct style of his own
d) images that are technically competent, showing an understanding of lighting, both available and artificial and composition...
e) photos with concise and accurate captions (esp. names and places spelled correctly)
And last but not least, I should mention that we are heading into the multi-media age so we are also shooting videos and slide shows for our web products.
----

I thought they were all good advice and will prove to be useful in my future work.

For $900, I hope it's a scam.
Otherwise I'd never be able to afford anything like it if that's what the market is dictating.

Can someone else confirm this? I have a Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7 and it also asks for the focal length every time I turn the camera on.

I sometime have trouble with slightly blurry/fuzzy pictures as well. But I attribute it to my poor manual focusing skills and the shallow DOF since I like to shoot it wide open or close to it.

You'd want to read this thread here: shooting-manual-lenses-pentax-dslrsl and read this here: Link

Basically, you need to go in the menu, and change your custom settings for your K100D to allow the use of the aperture ring. You can only use the Manual mode, and control the aperture (ring) and shutter speed (dial) yourself. Any other mode (Av included) will result in you shooting on largest aperture opening available on the lens.

Also I'm afraid your blinking F- will never show the aperture stop. It's the curse of the pre-A lens :)

As far as I know Konica Minolta is exclusively an office equipment (copier, fax machine etc) manufacturer now. My office just recently acquired one of those all-in-one print center behemoths from them.

New Lens or new camera.

You and I have very similar equipment with very similar interests. I'm pretty certain my next lens will be a fast 50mm. Somewhere in the f/1.4 to 1.7 range.

Your budget is a bit more generous than mine, you shouldn't have too much problem finding a decent used F- or FA-50mm with auto-focus.

However for someone who's a bit more strapped for cash like me, I'm also looking at the legacy lenses either the M-series (manual aperture & focus) or the A-series (auto aperture/manual focus). Both can be had for $150 or less, sometimes $100 or less. The reviews are good for both.

In my search for a fast 50 this weekend, I 'accidentally' picked up a FA-28mm f/2.8 for a good price. It's now the fastest lens I own and the difference has been pretty dramatic. I can only imagine what a f/1.4 lens can do.

Thanks for all the replies.

This is the kind of information I was looking for. So it sounds like I should continue my quest for a 50mm 1.7 or 1.4. But as of right now, it is the fastest lens I have so I'm gonna make the best of it :)

For what it's worth I took some photos around town in the late evening/night and here are some of my results -

Tiger @ f/2.8, 1/60, ISO400 -

Tiger at night @ f/2.8, 1/4, ISO3200 -

I went to the local camera shop in my parents' town looking for a fast 50 and walked out with this. It's not as fast and a bit wider than what I was looking for in a 50mm, but it was a good deal for $100 and it has received generally positive reviews here.

Just wondering if anyone has any specific hands-on experience with it. I'm also interested in how it performs in the evening & low light situation. I'll probably end up taking some photos around town tonight and I'll post them here.

Happy holidays :)

Thanks for the Gigolo review. It looks like a really nice and functional bag, even more so than the Crumpler Million Dollar Home series. I'd totally order one, but it doesn't look like it's available in the States.

It refers to stepping down the aperture from the widest available opening to smaller openings.

I do not understand the science behind the IQ improvement. Maybe someone else can shed some light.

Another useful link More specifics for the K100D (with no green button)

Learning to use the stop down metering was a big step for me.

I'm a little bit disappointed that the aperture info is not recorded in the EXIF data, so it always says f/0.0 for me. But I don't know what I was expecting :)

Good 50mm prime lens?

Speaking for myself, my main interest in a 50mm is the speed. It's seems like a huge difference being able to go down to f/2 or f/1.7. I know if I want a true 50mm FOV, I need a 35mm lens or thereabouts, but currently I'm not so concerned about it.

What about the 'Night Scene' in the SCN mode? What exactly does the camera do?

Does it up the ISO and/or largest aperture?

Taking photos of People in public etiquette

From a completely non-legal perspective, just because it's 'legal,' doesn't mean you shouldn't be courteous, especially the original question was about 'etiquette.' A little bit of respect and common sense goes a long way.

I also find that sometimes it's better if the subject can see you taking the photo, as opposed to sneaking around and looking shady. A little nod or smile afterward is often appreciated.

I would also discourage you from taking photos of illegal drug deals, no matter how public the setting may be :)

As a noob I tried to start my own thread about Flickr vs. Picasa, but I probably should've just posted in this thread.

I've dabbled with Adobe Lightroom, but decided to stick with Picasa's all-in-one solution. I use it to download, store and catalog my photos and upload to my Picasa Web Albums.

I also have a basic Flickr account, but the content is mostly duplicated and I have limited upload bandwidth per month.

Can someone give me some reasons as to why I should shell out for a pro Flickr and make that my primary web photo site instead of the free Picasa, especially I already use its desktop application?

Hello. I'm a recent K100D owner and have been lurking here for awhile. This forum has been invaluable for opinions and comments.

I want to see if anyone can give me some reasons as to why I should shell out for a pro Flickr account and make that my primary web photo site instead of the free Picasa web albums, especially I already use its desktop application?

I'm a fairly rudimentary user and don't do much post processing at all. I've dabbled with Adobe Lightroom, but decided to stick with Picasa's all-in-one solution. I use it to download, store and catalog my photos and upload to the web album.
