New travel kit guilt

I've been very pleased with the images I'm getting out of my Panasonic G-series m43 cameras, even with inexpensive lenses. You should be better off with the larger sensor in the NEX 5R. Happy travels!

I really like the second, edited version. If I had any money I'd buy a print.

Frustrated at Not Getting Better

When I take photos for others they are almost always happy with the results, but I am rarely satisfied. Despite what others say, I know that most of my photos aren't great. Some are ok, and every now and then I get one I really like. Skill, patience, equipment, etc play a part, but so does luck, and I am okay with that. I too am trying to increase my keeper rate.

Specific assignments really help me out. Visiting favorite spots at different times/weather/lighting helps. Reviewing other people's work helps a little.

Night on manual

I love night photography. Recently I have been shooting heavy equipment operating at night. When I shoot at night I:
-set aperture, shutter speed, and iso manually
-bump the sensitivity up as needed so I can use shorter exposures
-shoot from a monopod
-autofocus when I can

Controlling flare from light sources can be challenging. I either try to minimize the flare, or use it for effect.

I will say that shooting at night can be hard on my eyes, because of brightness differences between scenes, camera, headlights. Plus I have astigmatism that affects me more at night.

I love the composition. The white balance looks too cool to me (typical K5), but maybe that is the way the scene actually looked, I wasn't there. I think I might like this image a little better if the sky were darker- earth and sky kind of blend together at the horizon.

color warmth in pictures seems cold ??

Pentax cameras see the world as a cold, dark place. I could never set my K5 to produce colors I liked without post processing.

AWB in the Nikon and Canon cameras seems to perform a lot better than in Pentax, as you mentioned in your post. I wish Pentax would fix that.

Lance Armstrong doping campaign exposes USADA’s hypocrisy

I have to hand it to the USADA- they have managed to become more unlikeable than Lance, at least to me. We have all known about Lance for a long time, but I didn't know much about the USADA until now and I don't like what I am finding out.

image dimensions for websites

That is a tough question to answer. I suggest ignoring tablets for now and focusing on laptop-sized screens. Android devices will probably rescale the entire webpage to fit their screen unless you get into more complicated web design stuff like media queries etc. I don't have any apple stuff so I can't comment about how they display webpages, but I do know that despite all the hype they have a small market share. Most site views will still be made from laptops and desktops, and that is probably where you want to focus you design. Many of us have larger monitors with 1920x1080 resolution, but pages designed for laptops still look good on the bigger screen. With laptops in mind, you probably don't want to exceed 1200 px max width or 700 px max height if you want the entire image to fit on the screen. So I don't think you really need to go larger, but you could create larger versions of your images and provide a link to those.

K5 color accuracy

I found the color rendering in the K5 to be too cool (bluish). After dialing the amber to +2 it was better, but I always had to do a little post-processing. That's my opinion, others will disagree.

I like it- it is an attractive, playful image. However, I do wonder what that black "uard" thing is and why it is there.

Impressive. $800 for a little tripod like that is crazy. Of course, my friends think I'm crazy for taking long hikes with my beloved Induro 413 (I think it weighs 8 lbs with the head). They are going to love it when I show up with a wood tripod.

Landscape Waterfall - pick the better composition

I prefer w1. To me, w1 is more interesting, with a better balance between rock and water. The thing I dislike most about w2 is the tree stems or whatever those are at the top of the image.

I might like both images better if cropped to show only the upper level of the waterfall.

Oklahoma is one of my favorite places. I don't live there now, but maybe someday...

I think you are going to have a lot of fun with the K30. It has been a while since I have had a "first" of anything, but looking back those early days were generally very fun.

I do like this second version of the image better. By "augment the foreground" I meant that you could use a layer clipped from another image to cover up the distracting parts in this one. Some people are opposed to retouching images, but I think the retouching improves the aesthetics of this one.

I like the exposure, and the clouds (both on the mountain and in the sky) make this shot interesting. You could crop some off of the top, and I do find the foreground distracting, especially the power lines. If you could either 1) frame the shot without the power lines in it, or 2) make the town a part of the image somehow (example: a medium-distant house with lit windows or something like that) I would like it better. The silhouetted foreground would be easy to "augment" in photoshop, if you are into that sort of thing.

I think it is a keeper, but a little work in photoshop would make it better. Keep up the good work!

Hello everyone,

I've enjoyed this forum as a guest for some time now, and thought I'd take a chance and join. I live in the southern US, and sometimes make pictures with Pentax equipment.

Hi, new forum member here. I like your photos, especially the third. I like the emptiness of the shot, and I think the wider aspect ratio works very well. I might crop a little of the right side where it doesn't look so sharp. To my eye all three photos look slightly underexposed, but not bad.

I've never shot from a boat, but these photos make me want to give it a try.

Gotta start somewhere:) It wont be my last post. FWIW, I love the Pentax bodies (except for AF performance), but the lenses never worked out for me and I didn't have much to sell. If Pentax comes out with something great this fall I may buy back in.
