Irrelevancies in RAW processing.

Ah, so RAW data is not all that it seems.
I wasn't aware that it went through an image processor before being saved to the card. So it's not completely RAW and has a modicum of processing but the main bulk is left to the user afterwards.

I'm going to have to do a lot of reading up on this subject. It seems the rabbit hole is a lot deeper than I originally thought!

Well the K-S1 is not going to be replacing the K5 in my bag anytime soon. I do need to do a whole lot more learning about sharpening and RAW processing in general.

I've been doing a bit of RAW processing and have come to some questions.

Would It be right to say that the camera body used is largely irrelevant? Let me expand on this. Obviously we need a camera body to take photo's, that's a given. But if we shoot with say a K5 vs K30 and then process in RAW would there be any glaring differences or would the body's facilities just be niceties aiding the shooting but really relevant to the final imaging.

I've seen a difference between RAW processing my K5 images to those from K-S1. Because of the lack of AA filter the K-S1 seems sharper. Shooting the two, I prefer the heavier body of the K5 but final images from the K-S1 seem better?

I set my U1 on the K5 and K30 for B&W Shooting with the IR Filter on.
Produces some nice in camera B&Ws.

Raw files are unaffected.

These days i'm a digital shooter.
As much as I like film I just can't afford too shoot it. My K1000 is on eBay right now too as the money can be better invested.

The 85 is a great lens but i've got to be honest and say that it was severe case of LBA and i've never used excepting for when I got it. I can say the same for my M100 too.

Anybody know how much these are worth these days?

I hardly use it due to preferring AF for the most part. I thought it would have been a great addition to M collection but it's sat around unused for too long.
I'm actually looking at raising funds for a DA70 right now which i hope will see more use.

I had the Samsung GX-10 for 8years and nigh on wore it out (90,000 shutter actuations).
I wish I still had it. If it hadn't been for doubts over the continued longevity of the shutter i'd probably have kept it.

I did my L2 BTEC in Photography with that cam and was the only Pentax user in a seas of Canikons.

Thanks Mac,

I'm really looking forward to shooting some with it. The addition of the DA21 will be great addittion.
My next purchase will hopefully be a grip to help balance with the Bigma.

So far i've done great things with my K-S1. The K30 has damage so is effectively retired. The K-S1 is nice but the controls are odd and I miss the top display and the twin dials that fall to hand.

Heres a recent one from the K-S1. I hope to shoot more like this and hopefully better ........

Got a killer deal on a K5. 5,500 actuation. 290 with an 18-55WR lens.
Also got a DA21 for 230 so I actually got a great deal on some great kit for less than the K3.

The rest of my money is going on a DA70 to round out the kit.

I would have like the K3 but unemployment means I gotta live within my means. Paid for all this by selling other kit.

BigMackCam,

I should have said that the DA40 I own is the limited and not the XS model. The DA40 has been with me since my K10d and served me very well, particularly whilst doing my L2 BTEC in Photography at College (I got an Distinction.)

You make some good points. Right now I can bag a K3 with 3500 shutter actuation's for very little money.
I'd been pondering stepping up to some different glass (DA Limiteds or Tamron 70-200 2.8) but I think i'll stick with what I have - I also have a lot of legacy glass - and enjoy the top end body. I'll let somebody else take the hit on losing money on the body for once.

Hi,

Long time since I posted here. Right now I have K-S1 and a K-30. The K-S1 is my main shooter, the K-30 has some damage to the bottom plate so it doesn't get used (much).

I'd like to pickup a s/h K-3 but am concerned that my lenses wouldn't match up to the high quality of the K3.

I shoot with a Tamron A16 18-50 2.0 / Pentax DA40 DA35 DA50 DA55-300 A50 1.4 / Sigma 10-20 / Sigma 50-500.

Would I better served by a K-5II or perhaps sack it off and just buy some better glass?

I just changed camera's from a K10d to a K30 with a K-x for backup. I also took the opportunity to rethink my lenses. This is what I have now:

18-135 WR (Main walkaround lens)
16-45
55-300
Sigma 10-20
DA35/2/4
DA40 Limited (for K-x)
DA50/1.8
M85/2

I could most likely cut that down further but i'm happy to carry those.

There is an hourly service on this line pretty much all year round apart from Jan/Feb when they do maintenance. This was a Gala weekend so there were more services and different locos running.

Yes, i'll be at the Steam Gala. I wouldn't miss it for the world. It's been on my calendar since last years event.
I'll most likely be attending the Railway at War event too assuming i'm not otherwise consumed with babysitting etc.

---------- Post added 09-22-2014 at 02:19 AM ----------

Not at all. I'm in the area again today doing a Recce on some different spots to shoot at and will be around for two days this weekend.

My love of Photography and the railways far outweighs the dangers. Once bitten, twice shy eh? Like you said, it's probably a pretty rare occurrence and it's not likely to happen again.

and that's why I don't shoot Canon. They abandoned their earlier mount and may be set to do it again.
I'll stick with the versatility of the Pentax M42 and K mount thankyou very much.

I've used 35mm Ricoh's for some time now and have always admired how well built and easy they are to use.

In my collection I have KR-5, KR-10, KR-10m, XR-P, XR-20, Mirai and probably a few others. The KR-10m was my first K-mount that I owned myself. My dad had a KR-5 for years before that one.

razors, anybody use?

I switched to DE shaving about five years ago because I was fed up shelling out for 3/4/5 blade razors that were blunt after a single use.

Right now I use an Edwin Jagger DE89 three-piece or a 1974 Gillette Superspeed (my year of birth). Soap is usually Mitchells Wool Fat that is made locally in Bradford. My brush is Simpsons X1 Commodore and I finish off with Floid A/S.

Since changing shaving regimes i've not had a single nick/cut or patch of razor burn.

Sometime I even use this.....

There are too many gimmicks in these cameras and no real substance. I like a camera to take photos, not make phone calls, videos, cook my dinner etc......
I have other devices to do those jobs.

Computer control over everything is getting to be too much these days. Perhaps that's why the dear old K1000 endears me so much.

Well, my formal formal studies were in Photojournalism as my tutor does that for a living, Studio Lighting and Flash Photography, Portraiture, Product Photography, Colour Theory, Street Photography and we studied well known photographers from different fields depending on our week-to-week work.

Here's one of my early Product photography shots .........

This is something that I would never have attempted previously. Although I have been a photographer for 25 years (starting with 35mm of course) the formal training gave me a lot of skill that I may not have picked up otherwise.

I guess that I'm around level 3/4 as I often study maps for places to shoot. I explore them and find viewpoints that like and analyse my images to see how they could have been better, then often return to reshoot my images. I find Flickr is a mine of information and inspiration for shots. I often like to limit my choice of lenses as it forces me to think so much more about composition (as well as lightening the load on my m/cycle).

A year of Photographic Studies at the local college has brought my photography on quite a lot.

I never saw the snake let alone get a pic of. I had an inkling that they might be about but the one that bit me was probably in the ditch that I had to cross. The area is notorious for them. Still it would have been cool to get a pic.

I was shooting trains at the time and it was in the area that this photo was taken that he was waiting for me.
