DFA 150-450 bag recommendations?

An addition to my former post.

The DFA150-450 also fits into the LowePro Vertex AW100. But when I‘m going on a tour with some lenses and tripod stuff etc. it doesn’t offer enough space. I then in addition use a bag or rucksack that‘s not special for photography equipment. If I chose this solution I use lens bags to transport lenses securely.

I mostly go by feet or by bike or train / subway with or without a burley travoy and rarely by car. If I go by bike, I don‘t use the blackrapid strap because control over the lens movement is not easy - the hands have to stay at the bicycle handlebar. If I’m using the blackrapid strap it is fastend to the lens foot, not to the camera.

So - how I transport and handle my gear depends on different circumstances. :)

Audio Recorder?

The Tascam DR-40 I own some years now is a nice recorder and got some firmware updates. Some accessories like battery pack and cable remote you can get for it. As already said it offers two XLR ports with phantom power 48V. The reason I bought it. If you use high end quality mics you get very good sound quality but the build-in mics are also not bad at all IMO.

If you want to work more computer connected and use Apple MacOS and IOS devices (iPhone or iPad) I highly recommend Sonic Port VX. I was really surprised about the very good sound quality. If you go mobile simply connect it to your iPhone or iPad and use an app like Voice Record Pro. This setup has some nice advantages compared to a more proprietary device like the Tascam or similar solutions. With the Sonic Port VX you can even build up a small DAW (digital audio workstation) system if you choose Cubase Pro or similar on a Mac or Cubasis on an iPad. But the VX doesn‘t offer XLR ports.

I wouldn‘t connect these solutions to the camera audio out port because sound quality will not be the best you can get ... if that‘s important to you.

Simply record on the camera and special devices seperately, synchronize the sound tracks in post and then replace the camera sound track of your video (if you do videos) with in post processing optimized tracks.

This you can by example do with Cubase Pro (a DAW - from Steinberg) and I think it‘s even possible with free Apple MacOS App GarageBand or if you make advanced slide shows using FotoMagico. The two latter ones are only availlable on the Mac platform.

DFA 150-450 bag recommendations?

Just ordered the Lowepro LP36307 (large quiver for lenses, inside 13 x 13 x 32 cm, outside 20 x 18 x 35,5 cm, weight 0.5 kg).

I read that it fits optimal for the DFA150-450 even with camera attached!

So, a perfect addition to my LowePro Backpack Vertex AW100 that I also can also put into other bags or backpacks if necessary.

A swiss knife like the one BigMackCam described and a coin to fasten my Arca Swiss compatible Novoflex plates and L-brackets. If I‘m on a tour by bike in addition a Topeak Alien II multitool.

Your experiences very much meet my experience and opinion. I try to get my hands on a potentially new camera in a shop or at special events. The camera has to offer the functions I‘m used to work with and ergonomics and build quality have to fit my expectations. Today if I want to buy a new body I download the manual from the internet and study it.

When I decided to go the Pentax DSLR route in 2011 I read magazine and internet reviews and articles in the Pentax Forums. But decision between Pentax K-5 and Canon EOS 60D or 7D I made after trying out the bodies with attached 18-135mm lens - K-5 and DA18-135 won! Pentax and Canon were the competitors because from the analog era I already owned some lenses and equipment for both brands.

K-1 size and weight question

I own both, K-1 and KP, and find the difference in size and weight significant. I guess all depends on your personal constitution and which lenses you use (lightweight or heavy). By example I love using the DA*11-18 lens much more with the K-1 than with the KP. It simply balances much better with the K-1.

Another point you should consider is that the KP don‘t offers an integrated grip like traditional Pentax DSLRs. I always use the smallest of the delivered three. This individually installed grip may require that you change the manner how you hold the camera-lens combo. If you ever worked with an old film SLR like the ME Super and enjoyed it, you IMO shouldn‘t have a problem with the KP.

KP plus DA55-300PLM compared to K-1 plus DFA150-450 offers the same field of view on the long end and broader on the short end, but it‘s only half the weight ... ~1.170g vs. 3.340g! - Something you may also take into consideration.

If you need assurance for your decision I’d suggest to try to get your hands on both cameras and test them with your preferred lenses. Then you’ll realize which handles better for you. I’m sure you know you have to feel comfortable with your setup to have fun using it a lot. Wish you all the best for your decision!
