i sold mine and regret it as it's a nice to have.

but on the other hand, i bought it for video and despite the great ergonomics for that, the IQ just was not there..

well said. i'm not in a hurry to replace my more than capable k3.. and when i replace it i want a true enhancement on different levels.
and i think it is taking that long simply because they don't intend to release another plain update.

yeah, what the heck ;-) i love these pimped versions!

personally i'd take the WR. I took mine (non wr version) on safari once (dusty) and since then the AF is more hesitant. Not sure whether it relates to the dust or not.
But i think the WR will last you longer. For the price it is a very good lens.
I'd buy new. the price difference is not big enough..

However, 160$ is really not a lot for the non-wr if the lens is in good shape!...

Advice for new KP user: lenses

I understand you are looking for an improvement over the 18 55 wr but with a budget constraint.
Personally i can appreciate the 18 55 wr. You can take good solid shots with it. This said: in good light at optimal settings...

When looking at replacing the 18 55 (thus a walk about) i'd be looking at two options, both economical 2nd hand:
pentax da16 45 or da 17 70. I owned both. The 17 70 being more versatile because of the longer reach.
IQ wise, they are both very fine lenses, a true step beyond the 18 55. Do not expect really compact or fast AF..

If you're interested, you can find shots with da16 45 in my US gallery (smugmug below..) and some samples 17 70 in mexico and france gallery.

As others mentioned, there are a lot of options. Maybe tamron 17 50 2.8 is one of them.

Also mentioned by others: da 15. I also have it and really like it. Especially would be very nice in european cities. Da21 for a bit more conventional focal length. I do have the feeling you are looking more for a quality standard zoom in addition to your two primes.

16 85 would seem the best for you, but not sure whether this is within your budget. I don't own that lens, since i really like my da 17 70...

comes down to this i guess:

best of luck

funny obervation, compare it to adding film grain to a digital image..

Must say, i also have my periodic habits. Sometimes i want everything desaturated and sometimes it is the otherway around..

i don't think so. the one you feel most comfortable with..

on the photo question: i agree with what is said: keep high shutter and high iso. tav mode.. Your k50 is quite alright for iso.
lens wise: the largest aperture possible.. maybe a da 35 2.4 or even better: try to find a sigma 30 1.4?
30 means the scene will be a bit reduced vs 18mm, so keep your distance..

i would go for things like composition and photography areas first rather than the technical aspects. I think the former is more appealing to novices. Ofcourse some things go hand in hand. You could explain the triangle with interesting examples that appeal to people.

Comparing 17-70 to DA15, FA31 && FA77 - subjective throughts

just wanted to share some images made in mexico with the da17 70.
Actually quite a pleasing lens, with the nicest characteristic being the rendering, imo. It handles flare pretty well, but not in the league of da15.
Mexico - christophe gryspeert
It's nicely sharp but unlike fa31 or da12 24 for that matter.
Mexico - christophe gryspeert
looking at the focal lenghts i used on this trip, maybe i should have taken the da 12 24 with me.
But it's handy to have that flexibility to zoom further even if only occasionally.
Mexico - christophe gryspeert

The 16 85 is probably a good replacement for this lens, but i always find it hard to judge a lens if i have not used it myself..
just some thoughts..

I agree, i like the 31 on apsc. normal view, albeit a bit wider. Quite interesting..

just a thought: what about the fa24 f2?

the enhancements are irrespective of the used lens. highlights, shadows, noise...
lens corrections are only for modern lenses i assume. But you wouldn't really need this i think. distortion correction is probably the biggest lenscorrection one would want, but because of the focal lengths on your takys, you won't see much distortion..

ks1 seems to have a smaller grip.

did a trip to botswana last year with the da 55 300
this is what i got out of it..
you can find the focal length next to the pics.
Botswana - christophe gryspeert
imo pretty useful zoom. but it depends on what you really want to get out of it.
I kind of agree with a previous poster that the da300 & TC, thus 420 would have been nice on some occasions.
Mind you, one of the difficulties is the positioning of the truck vs wildlife. And the amount of time you have. definitely one body, one lens ratio. no time to swap lenses and it is dusty. If you go for 55 300. go WR version..

imo, it isn't meant to be retro. some people just call it retro in lack of a better word.
pentax has never been too worried to design out of the box. take K01 for instance..

for me, the kp is rather meant to be the perfect companion of the limited series.

don't worry, i was not trying to push you in the direction of pentax kr but my reasoning was the same as yours, with getting an older olympus body to start.
thing is, if today iso is a weaker link with olympus, you know for sure that future bodies will improve in that area.

What i appreciated with the om1 is that it has a more classic feel to it with the grip. Just more solid-comfy in hand.
The strategy of buying an older body, spending a bit more on quality glass & wait untill OM1 II prices drop, might be a good one.
the glass keeps it value in case you change your mind.. & if you like the brand, you have something to look forward too..

It's the main reason why i advised the kr body if you would go the pentax route.
ofcourse, value for money, the k70 can't be beat.
